Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening montage, a couple of "Beavis and Butthead" delinquents decide to take advantage of Saul's half-price sale by committing a rash of crimes. What item did they steal from someone's yard that eventually ended up lying damaged in a street?

Answer: Garden gnome

As Kim predicted, Saul's promotion of 50% off the cost of legal defense DID inspire people to commit crimes. In the montage featuring "This is Chai!" by the Japanese band Chai at beginning of the episode, two dim-witted delinquents went on a crime and drug fest fueled by Saul's half-off sale yelling "50% off" frequently during their rampage.

They stole groceries, liquor, and a garden gnome, among other things, vandalized vehicles, and bought large quantities of Salamanca meth. The gnome was eventually shown in the middle of a quiet street with an eye and a chunk of its face missing. Warning - "Breaking Bad" spoilers follow! Although the damaged gnome was not mentioned by Executive Producer/writer Peter Gould as an Easter Egg, it reminded me of the damaged bear in Walt's pool that first appeared in the "Seven Thirty Seven" episode of "Breaking Bad".

Another fan commented on a "Better Call Saul" forum that Saul's 50% off stunt could ultimately be linked to the downfall of Gus's empire, which ended with half of Gus's face blown off so the damage to the gnome was a foreshadowing of Gus's demise (see the comments to question seven for a further explanation).
2. Gus had previously "recruited" Nacho to work for him by killing Arturo in front of him. This time, after having Tyrus and Victor snatch Nacho from his sleep, what did Gus do to convince Nacho to gain Lalo's trust?

Answer: Threatened to have Victor kill Nacho's father

While he was sleeping, Nacho was awakened by Tyrus and Victor and some other thugs. Nacho protested as they took him away: "What do you want with me? I switched the stuff just like you told me". He was taken to a meeting with Gus which took place in front of a restaurant where his father was hanging out with friends.

When Victor got out of the car with a gun, Nacho frantically pleaded with Tyrus for his father's life: "Why is he doing this? I did everything". As Victor stood behind Nacho's dad in the restaurant, Gus entered the vehicle. Nacho asked what Gus wanted him to do, and Gus responded, "Lalo Salamanca". Nacho said that the only thing he knew was that Lalo was obsessed with Werner Ziegler "and some gringo Michael". Gus told Nacho to make Lalo trust him, and when Nacho asked how, Gus ominously told him to "FIND A WAY". Once Nacho agreed, Tyrus flashed the car lights, and Victor returned to the car, telling the traumatized Nacho: "Your pop's a nice guy".
3. Saul perhaps sensed that Kim wasn't keen on his new persona, so he went out of his way to connect with her. What high-end potential purchase did he take her to see?

Answer: A large house

Saul was ironing a shirt and talking with clients on the phone while Kim was getting ready for work. He chatted with her briefly between calls and tried to make plans for dinner, but Kim was noncommittal. As Kim was leaving for work, Saul jumped in her car and told her he wanted to show her something.

He took her to a huge house that was for sale, and the two of them toured it. He told her "You're doing great, and I'm gonna be doing great. I've got 45 clients" so in his mind, the house wasn't out of their price range. Kim wasn't enthusiastic, but she went along and was impressed by the size of the closet ("This is the closet of your dreams!") and by the bathroom.

When Saul stood in the shower, Kim couldn't resist turning it on him, a reminder of their shared mischievousness.

They left the property with a disapproving scowl from the real estate agent. "Maybe someday" Kim told Saul.
4. Lalo was obsessed with finding out what Gus was building, but basically, he just wanted Gus out of the way. Who gave him the suggestion to go after Gus's money, without actually telling him to do so?

Answer: Hector

Lalo went to see Hector and replaced some of Hector's very berry Fizzy-K vitamin solution with liquor from a flask which Hector enthusiastically sucked down. After Hector had a sip, Lalo talked about Gus. He was trying to guess what Gus was building: "A tunnel... a lab... maybe a vault?" He didn't buy Gus's story: "Maybe Eladio and Bolsa believe it but I don't".

He said he didn't know what he could do since they only cared that he brought in the money. That's when Hector hit the bell. Lalo asked if the meant the money, and Hector hit the bell three times. Lalo thought aloud, "As long as he brings in the money, he's protected". We could see that this gave him an idea.

He then took a swig of Hector's juice but didn't like it, telling Hector that it was gross. So he added a lot more liquor to it, and then gave Hector a drink, receiving a wide-eyed seal of approval.
5. What sport did Mike use to teach his granddaughter Kaylee her multiplication tables?

Answer: American football

Mike's daughter-in-law Stacey asked him to sit with Kaylee but it was on short notice, and Mike had apparently been doing a lot of drinking since leaving Gus's employment. But he made it to her house, toolbox in hand so that he and Kaylee could work on the treehouse. Kaylee was working on her multiplication tables which she had previously worked on with Mike while they were watching the Superbowl: "Four touchdowns equals 28, plus another one makes 35. Go Eagles! Kick ass!" Mike played the father figure, "You don't talk like that. Who taught you to talk like that?" to which Kaylee retorted, "You did".

When Mike asked her what seven times eight was, she said that's a lot of touchdowns and guessed 55, to which Mike responded, "so you think the kicker missed the extra point".

Then she changed her answer to 56.
6. What topic did Kaylee bring up that caused Mike to lose his temper with her?

Answer: Her dad

After Kaylee practiced her multiplication tables using the Eagles' Superbowl appearance as a teaching tool, the conversation then turned to Mike's son since he liked the Eagles. Kaylee asked Mike if her dad wanted to be a police officer when he was young, and Mike said he wanted to be an astronaut or a deep sea explorer when he was young.

But then Kaylee stated that he ended up being a policeman like Mike, and it appeared to bother him. The more she talked about her dad, the more unsettled Mike became.

When she said that "the bad guys got him", Mike finally turned and snapped at her for not applying the non-slip adhesive to the steps of the treehouse evenly: "I told you to make those even... you either do it right or you don't do it". When she protested, he yelled at her, "You're DONE" and she ran into the house.
7. What was Domingo doing when he got arrested?

Answer: Fixing a drainpipe

The two dope heads from the opening montage showed up later in the episode when they went to the Salamanca apartment to buy ten packets of meth. The woman sent the packets down the drainpipe, but the packets got stuck. One of the knuckleheads banged on the pipe: "Where's the cookie?" A shouting match then ensued between the woman and the two men. Meanwhile Lalo, Nacho, and Domingo were playing poker with a couple of the dealers. Lalo won the pot after bluffing out Domingo; he made Domingo fold with a pair of eights when Lalo only had a two and a seven. Lalo called him Ocho Loco, giving him the Krazy-8 nickname he carried in "Breaking Bad". Then Domingo got the phone call about the drainpipe. "It's your crew" said Nacho, so Domingo headed out to take care of it. Domingo was up on a ladder fixing the drainpipe when the police arrived. Everyone else scattered, leaving Domingo to deal with the cops. When they asked why he was up there, he said that he was fixing the pipe. Unfortunately for Domingo, he knocked on the pipe to demonstrate, and the packets of meth fell out. "Guess you fixed it" replied the officer. Domingo could only sheepishly smile.

As mentioned in the ii for question one, a fan had suggested on one of the "Better Call Saul" forums that it was Saul's half-price sale that led to Gus's downfall. "Breaking Bad" spoilers follow! Here's the links: The two delinquents bought a larger than usual order of meth based on their rampage that was initiated by Saul's 50% sale; Domingo was arrested because he was trying to fix the jam caused by the large order in the drainpipe; as an informant for the police, Domingo was responsible for the raid on "Cap'n Cook's" meth lab in "Breaking Bad"; as a result of that raid, Jesse started working with Walter White; White then started working with Gus Fring, and when he wanted to get rid of Fring, he caused the explosion that killed Gus, taking off half of his face, similar to the appearance of the damaged gnome. Pretty brilliant.
8. What did Nacho do to gain Lalo's trust while a bemused Lalo watched?

Answer: Recovered the stash of product before police broke into the apartment

After Domingo had been arrested, Lalo and Nacho were watching the scene at the apartment complex, along with the man and the woman who worked at the site. When Lalo asked if the woman had the product, she said that she had to leave it there. Lalo looked unhappy when he heard that there was almost a full load of product at the site, but as more police cars arrived to the location, it looked as if there was nothing they could do.

But Nacho decided that it was an opportunity to score points with Lalo.

He left the car, and as Lalo and the others watched, he appeared on the roof of the building next to the Salamanca apartment. He then jumped across to that building and dropped through a skylight. Lalo was enjoying the show, "Look at that! He's a fool, right?" he said to the others in the car who looked decidedly more concerned for Nacho.

As the police began to head into the building, Lalo said, "Adios Nachito", munching snacks as he watched. But Nacho stashed the product in his pants and jumped through a window just before the police bashed open the door.

As Lalo was asking, "Did they get him?", Nacho rushed into the car and showed Lalo the stash. Lalo sadistically laughed, "Ignacio Varga, you are a badass". The stunt worked because the next time we saw Lalo at the restaurant, he let Nacho make the decision on when to send the crews back on the street. He then told Nacho to grab two Modelos, and the two of them shared a meal that Lalo had cooked while they discussed Domingo's situation.
9. Thanks to a little underhanded shenanigans by Saul, where did he and ADA Suzanne Erickson "meet" to work out the deals for the bulk of his cases?

Answer: In a stuck elevator

Saul had tried to get ADA Suzanne Erickson to work through a bunch of his cases; he attempted to talk with her at the courthouse by telling her they had a few things in common, to which she responded, "Oh, I hope not". He pointed out that they had sixteen cases in common, and he wanted to run them by her to get them settled right then: "You're busy, I'm busy, how about we do a lightning round, we'll settle these puppies -- twenty minutes". Suzanne told him she'd see him next Tuesday when they had an appointment; she realized he was just trying to turn over the cases quickly to make money, and she wasn't playing that game. So Saul was ready when he ran into her next time in an elevator; he had a maintenance man jam the elevator so they were stuck together for twenty minutes.

At first, Suzanne was reading while Saul practiced his trial speech, but she became irritated with the noise, and finally said, "Name one... one of the cases". A "surprised" Saul named a case, and after they debated the pros and cons of it, Saul accepted Suzanne's offer of one year probation.

They then proceeded to work through his stack of cases, and by the time the elevator was fixed, they had all but three resolved. After Suzanne left, Saul handed an envelope to the elevator repairman and offered "legal services for the other half", telling him that his brother's "record will be cleaner than 'Doris Day's Greatest Hits'".
10. At the end of the episode, Saul was bopping down the street, eating an ice cream cone and chatting with clients on his Bluetooth. Who pulled up along side him, and took him for an involuntary ride?

Answer: Nacho

Saul looked pleased with himself after his elevator shenanigans, and he was enjoying his mint chocolate chip ice cream cone while he talked business on the Bluetooth. Suddenly a car pulled up along side him with Nacho sitting in the passenger seat. Nacho nodded his head to indicate to Saul to get in the back seat. "Mr. Varga, long time, no see", Saul responded.

When Nacho told him to get in, Saul told him he was "a little swamped right now", but Nacho opened the backseat door, and Saul realized this wasn't an invitation he could turn down.

He started to get in, but Nacho shook his finger at the ice cream cone, so Saul dropped it on the sidewalk.
