Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode "JMM" started with Kim and Saul's wedding. Who served as a witness to their wedding and offered to steal a wedding ring for the bride?

Answer: Huell

While Saul and Kim were filling out the paperwork, Huell called Saul aside and asked if he needed to hold the rings. When Saul told him there were no rings, Huell offered to get "a nice rock, probably about a half a carat" from a clerk downstairs. When Saul declined, telling Huell it was a different kind of wedding, Huell then suggested they "do it up right, for the rugrat". Saul explained, "This is a legal arrangement.

This way, if I get into trouble, they can't make her testify against me", and when Huell asked if Kim was going to be a McGill or Goodman, Saul bluntly said "Wexler". Huell looked disappointed.

He looked happier during the ceremony when he snapped a couple pictures of the wedding kiss. Series co-creator Peter Gould was nervous about Saul and Kim getting married; he didn't want the ceremony to "end up being sappy or cute".

But he was pleased with the way that director Melissa Bernstein filmed it: "I like the fact that you see people getting married at City Hall... They're saying it's all for legal reasons but then there's that great moment when they're facing each other.

There's a lightness to it, a connection. I just love it". On the "Better Call Saul" fan forums, several people commented on Kim's lack of a middle name, particularly as the judge pointed it out during the ceremony. Is this a bread crumb for a future episode?
2. When Rich and Kim met with Kevin Wachtell following the Acker case settlement, Kevin made it clear that he wasn't sure if he was going to continue Mesa Verde's relationship with their firm. What did Kim do to change Kevin's mind?

Answer: Told him off

Kim made a pitch for Kevin to keep the services of Schweikart and Cokely, with Paige adding her two cents about how "flawless" the legal work had been up until Tucumcari. But Kevin told Kim that he had expected more from her, and he was disappointed that she "dropped the ball".

As Kim and Rich were leaving, Kevin told her that she "could do a whole lot better" than Saul, which got her back up. So when Rick and Kim were walking down the hallway, Kim told him that they couldn't leave the situation like this, and she went back to confront Kevin.

She told Kevin, "No matter what our relationship looks like moving forward, we owe you the truth. And the truth is... you ignored our advice. We said that Mesa Verde should reconsider the site for the call center, you declined. We advised you to keep the purchased lot as an investment, you declined. And we advised you to leave that meeting when it became apparent that the other side was negotiating in bad faith, and you declined.

At every point we gave you the best guidance we could, and at every point you chose to go your own way... If you continue to ignore us, then this is the wrong relationship".

As she started to leave, she added, "Whoever represents you in the future, I hope you're going to listen to them a little bit better". Kim's hard line stance worked. Kevin told them, "See you on Thursday".
3. Saul had a new client, one Jorge de Guzman, who turned out to be Lalo. When Lalo saw the "JMM" initials on Saul's briefcase, Saul told him it stood for his motto "Justice Matters Most". What did Lalo tell him it should stand for?

Answer: Just Make Money

Kim had bought the briefcase for Saul when he had his license reinstated, and she had it monogrammed for James Morgan McGill. Saul told her he'd use the briefcase but change the initials to his motto. Lalo laughed when Saul gave him the "Justice Matters Most" line.

He later told Saul that it was "time to get yourself a new motto: Just Make Money" when he hinted to Saul that being a "friend of the cartel" could be lucrative for him.
4. Saul wanted Lalo to go for a manslaughter plea bargain, but Lalo had other ideas. What did he want Saul to do?

Answer: Get him out on bail

As Jorge de Guzman, Lalo had been accused of first degree murder and a host of other crimes, thus the judge denied bail. When Saul met with him after the arraignment, Saul suggested waiting for the DA to propose a deal and then getting the murder charge dropped to manslaughter, but Lalo wasn't interested. Saul said that they didn't want to go to trial, but Lalo said, "No trial, no deal".

He told Saul he wanted to get out on bail, to which Saul responded, "I don't know how things work south of the border, but here, under these circumstances, that's a long shot".
5. Gus attended a meeting with other Madrigal restaurant executives in Houston and later that evening, met with Madrigal executives Peter Schuler and Lydia Rodarte-Quayle. What did we discover about Herr Schuler?

Answer: He was financing Gus's underground lab.

Gus attended the meeting with other Madrigal entities, such as Stingin' Rays Hawaiian BBQ, Whisterstay's (who rolled out Avocadomania), and the unforgettably named Luftwaffle. Gus reported that Los Pollos Hermanos had an 8.3% increase in sales, and he provided attendees with samples of their new Spice Curls, "the curly fry with the Southwestern kick". Later that evening at a hotel, Gus took off his shoes, hung up his jacket (a fan commented on the "Better Call Saul" forums that he was an evil Mr. Rogers), then knocked on the door to the adjoining hotel room. Gus briefly appeared to be disappointed when the door was opened by Lydia but he quickly turned his expression to a smile. Schuler was in his bathrobe, looking glum, but he brightened up when he saw Gus.

He said that Lydia had informed him that Lalo was locked up which meant that construction on the lab could continue. Gus told them that Lalo was still a problem in jail because he'd ordered his men to burn down a restaurant. Lydia was surprised that he could do that from jail and suggested that he should meet an accident there, but Gus said that if anything happened to Lalo north of the border, he'd be blamed. Schuler was extremely nervous; he felt he was on the verge of being caught, but Gus calmed him. Gus sweet talked him about a past episode in Santiago when Schuler saved them: "You are still the same man. You will do what is necessary". Santiago had been mentioned before, but we haven't heard the details on what occurred there.

But from Gus's actions with Schuler, it was apparent that their relationship was more than just business.
6. It had been quite a while since Mike and Saul met face-to-face, but after Kim left for work, Mike showed up at their apartment. What were the documents that he gave to Saul?

Answer: Evidence to get Lalo out of jail

When Saul and Kim wanted to dig up dirt on Kevin Wachtell, Saul had called Mike. Mike was in Mexico at the time, and the poor phone connection made Saul think that Mike was in a tunnel. So when Mike called Saul this time, Saul pretended to be in a tunnel and hung up on the call just as there was a knock at the door.

Unfortunately, it was Mike. Saul told him, "You got me in my underwear so enjoy the show". Mike went right to business: He wanted Saul to get Lalo out of jail, and he gave him the evidence to make it happen.

When Saul asked Mike why he wanted Lalo out, Mike said, "I represent someone who has an interest... someone your client can never know about". Saul tried to argue that he didn't "take marching orders from the man behind the curtain", but Mike pointed out that it was better that he didn't know who was giving the orders.
7. Why did Nacho and Gus go to a Los Pollos Hermanos restaurant in the middle of the night?

Answer: To burn it down

Lalo contacted Nacho from prison and told him to burn down one of Gus's restaurants. Nacho naturally reported this to Gus, and ever the perfectionist, Gus decided to orchestrate the fire himself. To the exotic sounds of Yma Sumac, Nacho enthusiastically trashed the building while Gus prepared the explosion.

He took out the fry bins that Lyle had worked so hard to clean, and he inspected them while the fryer heated up. After having Nacho vandalize the place, Gus sent him away while he (Gus) set up his chicken bomb.

He took a chicken from the cooler and placed it on a sheet pan over boiling oil, and when it slid in, it sparked the fire. The gas explosion blew out the windows of the building shortly after Gus had walked away. The actual building used for the blast was an abandoned restaurant in southeast Albuquerque.

It was decorated as a Los Pollos Hermanos restaurant, and then the explosion was staged late one Friday evening in the summer of 2019.
8. When Saul was in court with "Jorge de Guzman", he provided evidence that Mr. de Guzman had ties to the community. What other evidence did Saul present that resulted in the judge granting bail?

Answer: Witness tampering

Saul had to prove that Lalo (Jorge de Guzman) wasn't a flight risk, and he did so by providing Mr. de Guzman with a family. The fiancee, two step kids that he reportedly raised, and a future mother-in-law sat in court and made a favorable impression, but it was the allegations of witness tampering that scored the most points with the judge.

The prosecutor admitted that they just found out about the allegations; according to her, it appeared that a third party had influenced a witness to provide evidence against Mr. de Guzman. We of course know that it was Mike who visited the librarian last episode to help her remember a car in the parking lot on the day of the murder.

The judge was angry over the witness tampering, but still mindful of the nature of the crime, so she set bail at $7 million. Saul apologized to Lalo, believing that Lalo wouldn't make bail, but Lalo seemed OK with it: "Seven million? I can do that".
9. On the day of the bail hearing, who was in the courtroom and tugged at Saul's conscience?

Answer: The victim's family

Saul's willingness to provide legal services to the criminal element of Albuquerque did not include the scope of what Lalo did. When Lalo looked back to see his fake family, he asked who the other people in the courtroom were, and Saul answered that it had to be his family, meaning the victim. Lalo shrugged it off, but Saul was disturbed; he turned to look at them, and the pain on their faces clearly bothered him.

He then stared at the ground in a state of rumination, oblivious to what was going on around him until the judge loudly addressed him.

After he left the courtroom, Saul looked around a corner and saw the prosecutor speaking with the victim's family. A look of agony covered his face, but what was particularly disturbing was the split image that was created due to the glassy surface of the wall.

It didn't display a complete face, as if a part of Saul was missing. The image drew a lot of comments on the "Better Call Saul" fan forums and on the episode reviews, with several people commenting that the scene showed the split between Jimmy and Saul.
10. At the end of the episode, Howard ran into Saul in the hallway following the bail hearing. Before becoming the victim of Saul's verbal tirade, what did Howard tell Saul?

Answer: He was revoking the job offer

When Howard ran into Saul in the hallway following Lalo's bail hearing, he once again asked whether Saul had made a decision about the job offer. Saul hesitated and said that he was still thinking it over, but then Howard said, "Don't bother. It seems that I've upset you, so offer's off the table".

When Saul asked what he meant, Howard said, "You want to know what's weird? It's weird to offer a job to a man and in return have bowling balls thrown at your car, and prostitutes sent to your business lunch". Saul told Howard that he sounded "unhinged", but Howard merely replied, "Jimmy, I'm sorry you're in pain".

But that made SAUL become unhinged, "You're sorry? You kill my brother and you say you're sorry?" And then Saul let Howard have it. He said that he hadn't been upset by the job offer; it had just amused him: "Big job at the illustrious HHM.

A chance to play at The Palace. Little ole me?" Howard walked away but Saul followed screaming at him: "You look down on me? You pity me? Walk away, that's right Howard. You know why I didn't take the job? Because it's TOO SMALL!" For "Breaking Bad" fans, Saul then had his Walter White "The One Who Knocks" moment: "I travel in worlds you can't even imagine. You can't conceive of what I'm capable of. I'm so far beyond you. I'm like a God in human clothing. Lightning bolts shoot from my fingertips". Episode director Melissa Bernstein said that Saul was feeling "shame and anger" over his defense of Lalo and that Howard was the "receptacle for all of those awful emotions". Saul actor Bob Odenkirk added that Howard was an embodiment of Chuck's judgment over Jimmy, and that's why he felt that Saul raged at him.

In either case, poor Howard!
