Andre, or "Dre", is the father of four children and the husband of Rainbow. Andre spends a lot of time trying to instill urban life lessons on his children, but usually his children wind up teaching him a lesson. Charlie Telphy is a friend of Andre's and he used to work at the same place that Andre works.

Earl Johnson is the patriarch of the Johnson family and the grandfather of Dre's children. Zoey is the oldest, followed by "Junior", or more formally, Andre Johnson, Jr.,and then the twins Jack and Diane Johnson.

June Bug has always bullied Andre and that doesn't change in this episode, as he starts out bullying him again, but he reveals that he respects Andre, so this makes Andre feel better. Andre's nieces and nephews also pick on Zoey, Junior, Jack and Diane by taking their candy and bullying them, but this year the Johnson kids try to exact revenge.

Raven Symoné made her fame on "The Cosby Show", as Olivia when she was very young. She also had a successful Disney Channel Show called "That's So Raven". Rhonda, Raven's character on "Black-ish" is a lesbian and is in town to announce her engagement to her partner Sharon.

In the season two episode "Martin Luther Skiing Day" it is revealed that the family goes to a ski resort every year on the holiday, which celebrates one of the most famous black figures in American history. This year, Dre has decided that he is going to use the ski tip to teach his kids about Dr. King, Jr, and his role in American history. One of the best segments in this episode is when Dre's wife Rainbow compares herself to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., even stating at one point that she is a "real" doctor.

Daddy's Day is created by Dre and his co-workers after he gets several crummy gifts for a Father's Day. One of the rules of Daddy's Day is no mugs or ties, as Dre says "top shelf gifts only". Zoey's friend Rasheeda is hanging at the Johnson house with her and she likes the idea of Daddy's Day because her own dad wanted nothing to do with her. Dre sees that he has a supporter and starts bonding with Rasheeda, when his own daughter won't bond with him.

He takes Rasheeda driving, and decides to use her as the spokesperson for the Daddy's Day advertisement.

A jealous Zoey, who had turned Dre down for driving lessons previously, goes driving with Pops and tries to pass Dre and Rasheeda. Afterward, Zoey tells Dre that he is her dad and should make her go driving.

The family is sitting around the television watching news coverage of a police brutality case. Junior feels compelled to go join the riots, but Zoey tries to talk him out of it. Dre and Bow are at odds about whether to discuss the events that are unfolding with their two young twins Jack and Diane.

Charlie was Dre's coworker who, like Dre, was also African-American. This led to several exchanges by Dre and Charlie over similarities and differences in the way they were brought up, and their ideologies. Charlie had many unusual characteristics and this led to some very interesting quotes by his character throughout he series. One of the interesting facts that we find out about Charlie, is that he has a son named Eustace who Charlie sometimes refers to as "Useless".
