In this episode we meet the big bad of season five, Glory. Buffy was convinced that it's magic that was making her mum ill, so she did a spell that would reveal the magic. During the spell everything pointed to Dawn. Buffy went to the warehouse and met Glory, but Glory beat her. Buffy rescued the monk that Glory was torturing and he told her that Dawn wasn't really her sister. Dawn was The Key that Glory was looking for and begged Buffy to protect it.

In this episode, Tara's family came to Sunnydale to take Tara home before her 20th birthday. Tara's father has made her believe that the women in her family have demon in them, and that is where the magic comes from. Tara did a spell on the Scoobies that made them unable to see demons, so that they would not see the demon in her.

It went wrong when Glory sent a group of Lei-Ach demons after Buffy and no-one could see them. Tara reversed the spell just in time, but her father turned up to take her home. Buffy then told Mr Maclay that if he wanted Tara then he will have to go through her, and the rest of the gang agree. Spike eventually proved that Tara had no demon in her by punching her on the nose and this activated his chip.

Glory is using them to summon Sobek, a giant snake that she can use to find her key. Buffy kills Sobek before he can reach Glory with the news that Dawn is the key. n Buffy also finds out that her mum has a brain tumour in this episode.

Riley secretly calls in the military for help. The Queller follows Buffy and Joyce home and tries to kill Joyce but Buffy kills it.

In this episode Giles has gone to England to ask the Watcher's Council if they have any information on Glory. He leaves Anya in charge of the Magic Box and her and Willow start bickering over Xander. While Willow is trying to do spell to make a ball of sunshine, Anya keep interrupting and the spell goes wrong.

They end up summoning Olaf the troll who then reeks havoc in Sunnydale. Buffy manages to defeat him and Willow send him to another dimension. Anya and Willow eventually make up when Anya realises that Willow isn't going to break them up and Willow realises that Anya isn't going to hurt Xander.

In this episode, The Watcher's Council, headed by Quentin Travers, come to Sunnydale with information about Glory. They only agree to give Buffy the information if she passes their review. They interview all her friends, including Spike. Buffy soon realises that it is she who has the power and that The Council need her to make their jobs meaningful.

She tell Quentin that she will continue her work with the help if her friends, Giles is to be reinstated as her watcher with full salary to be paid from the month he was fired and that once they have given her the information she needs they will leave Sunnydale and never come back. Quentin agrees to this and reveals to Buffy that Glory isn't a demon, she is in fact a God.

This episode sees Buffy turning 20. At the party Dawn decides to sneak out and with the help of Spike breaks into The Magic Box to read Giles' watcher diaries. She finds out that she is the key and freaks out. She goes to the hospital and meets Ben.

He works out that she is the key and morphs into Glory, but Glory can't remember any of Ben's actions or thoughts. Buffy manages to rescue Dawn after Willow does a spell that makes Glory disappear. She explains that to her, Dawn is her sister, they share the same blood.

In this episode Spike tries to tell Buffy that he loves her but she doesn't want to listen. When he gets back to his crypt he discovers Drusilla is there. Drusilla and Spike head to the Bronze where Drusilla tries to get Spike to kill again. Buffy later visits Spike at his crypt and Drusilla ambushes her with a stun gun.

She awakes later to find that she is chained up, but Spike has also tied up Dru and tells Buffy that he will stake Dru to prove his love. The first person that Buffy calls is Giles and then she goes to the school to break the news to Dawn. It is while they are at the hospital that Tara tells her about her own mother dying. In this episode it is Joyce's funeral. Spike takes Dawn to see Doc so that she can find out about doing a spell that will bring Joyce back. Buffy finds out and tries to stop Dawn and Dawn rips up the photo of her mother at the end and that breaks the spell. Angel also returns to Sunnydale in this episode to comfort Buffy.

Buffy and the rest of the gang go to Glory's and rescue Spike but still don't know if Spike told Glory that it was Dawn. Buffy pretends to be the Buffy-bot to get the truth out of Spike, he didn't tell Glory that Dawn was the key as he couldn't do that to Buffy. Buffy kisses Spike and he realises that it's the real Buffy, she tells him that she will never forget what he has done.

When Glory realises that Tara is not they key she sucks Tara's brain. Willow arrives to late to save her and decides to go after Glory alone.

She manages to hurt Glory at first but her power isn't strong enough and Buffy rescues her. At the end of this episode Tara, who has now lost her mind, mistakenly reveals to Glory that Dawn is the key.

The Scoobies, along with Spike flee Sunnydale in a Winnebago but they are attacked by the Knights of Byzantium. Giles and Spike get badly injured and the gang hide out in an old house. Willow does a protection spell to keep them save. Buffy calls Ben to come and tend to Giles' wounds and while he is there he morphs into Glory who kidnaps Dawn and escapes.

Giles kills Ben so that Glory won't return. However, Doc has managed to get to Dawn and after throwing Spike off the tower, cuts her and the portal starts to open. Buffy realises that she can't let Dawn die and sacrifices herself by jumping into the portal and closing it. Buffy is dead. The closing shot of the season of Buffy's headstone which reads -
