Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yannick Bisson plays the titular William Murdoch, a detective whose unusual and inventive methods drives his colleague loony at times. Murdoch's religion frequently comes into play in his investigations. Of what religion is he?

Answer: Roman Catholic

Murdoch is a Catholic who once entered the seminary to become a priest but left when he fell in love. His sister also became a nun. Murdoch's religion caused tension in a number of cases including one involving his sister and one focusing on the anti-Catholic Free Masons.

His religion also caused problems between him and his love Dr. Julia Ogden because she once had an abortion that left her sterile and had married someone else and wanted to divorce him and not get an annulment.
2. Thomas Craig plays Inspector Thomas Brackenreid, a rough and tough man's man who has a liking for what stereotypical feminine thing?

Answer: The theater and opera

Brackenreid loves the theater, especially the opera. On the occasions when there is a murder in a theater, Brackenreid is often in disbelief when Murdoch accuses his favorite actors of crimes. He also once fell for a leading lady who turned out to be a murderer.
3. Johnny Harris plays Constable George Crabtree, a sometime aloof, sometimes brilliant police officer. Crabtree is an amateur mystery novelist and frequently talks about his ideas for his books. What was the name of Crabtree's first novel that was featured prominently in a season five episode?

Answer: Curse of the Lost Pharaoh

In the season five episode "Evil Eye of Egypt," Crabtree is on a book tour promoting his novel at an exhibit of allegedly cursed Egyptian artifacts. Naturally, a real murder occurs there. Crabtree is also known for his bizarre stories about his many aunts as well as predicting future world events, inventions and creations, many of which are scoffed at by the other characters as ridiculous. For instance, after observing Murdoch using a miniature crime scene to play out possible scenarios, Crabtree says this could be a fun board game, alluding to Clue/Cluedo. Murdoch then rebukes him by saying no one would play that game because murder isn't fun.
4. Helene Joy plays Dr. Julia Ogden, the local medical examiner, a position not often if ever held by women in Victorian times. She and Murdoch have an awkwardly romantic relationship. In season six, she decided to separate from her husband Dr. Darcy Garland so she could marry Murdoch. How did her marriage to Darcy actually end?

Answer: Darcy was murdered

Murdoch had intended to propose to Dr. Ogden in season three, but she moved to Buffalo and returned to Toronto married to Darcy in season four, believing that Murdoch's religion would always keep them apart. Over the next few seasons, Dr. Ogden and Darcy's marriage is strained for a number of reasons, including her relationship with Murdoch.

In the season five finale, she decides to leave Darcy for Murdoch. However, she runs into a number of problems including refusing to lie to get an annulment and Darcy changing his mind about divorcing her. Darcy is killed in the season six finale and Dr. Ogden is the prime suspect as her being a widow would end not only her marriage to Darcy but allow her to marry Murdoch with his conscious free.
5. Georgina Reilly plays Dr. Emily Grace, Dr. Ogden's replacement as the medical examiner. She once had a romantic relationship with Constable Crabtree that ended when she kissed which character?

Answer: Leslie Garland

Leslie Garland was Darcy's brother. Crabtree ended his relationship with Dr. Grace and took a disliking to her after that. Dr. Grace later became active in the women's suffrage movement and entered into a relationship with another woman. Dr. Grace also has a liking for unconventional ideas and medical practices.

She belongs to a group that attempts to experience death without really dying.
6. Lachlan Murdoch plays Constable Henry Higgins, Crabtree's good friend and patrol partner. Although Higgins is portrayed as less intuitive than Crabtree, Higgins has the upper hand in some cases because he speaks which language?

Answer: French

When the other characters learned of Higgins' French speaking abilities, they were shocked since Higgins was a typical, young bachelor for Victorian times, not likely interested in French anything. Higgins then explained that his mother was French, which is how he learned to speak it.
7. Arwen Humphreys plays Mrs. Margaret Brackenreid, the Inspector's sometimes overbearing but always loving wife. Her involvement with which group caused a strain with her husband in the second season of the show?

Answer: The Temperance League

Inspector Brackenreid loves his alcohol, particularly scotch. However, when Margaret joined the Temperance League, she tried to get him to kick the drinking all together. Eventually, she agreed to let him drink provided he paid more attention to her and drank less often.
8. Lisa Faulkner plays Anna Fulford, a love interest of Murdoch's he first met while he had amnesia in England. When she moves to New York and visits Toronto, Murdoch investigates the murder of which of her loved ones?

Answer: Her fiance

Anna's fiancé Joe was a counterfeiter for a mafia group named the Black Hand who killed him and put a hit out on Anna. In the season five two-part episode "Stroll on the Wild Side," Anna returns to Toronto under an assumed name when the Black Hand track her down. With the help of Murdoch and Dr. Ogden, Anna fakes her death to escape them.
9. Peter Stebbings plays James Pendrick, a sort of rival or nemesis to Murdoch. Pendrick was on of the wealthiest men in Toronto and first appeared in the season three episode "This One Goes to Eleven" when a painting of his is stolen. Although the culprit is revealed at the end, Murdoch believed Pendrick to be the mastermind behind that crime and several others over the course of the season. Does James Pendrick turn out to be this mastermind?

Answer: No

It turns out that James' wife Sally is the mastermind. Murdoch was correct in assuming that someone else was the mastermind behind the stolen painting but was incorrect in believing it was Pendrick. Sally Pendrick had flirted openly with Murdoch, which may have clouded his judgment. Sally was a known criminal from New York who married James to use his money to develop a doomsday device. James Pendrick appears every so often in subsequent seasons, usually with a new invention such as an airplane.
10. Every once in a while a famous person will find themselves caught up in some crime in Toronto. Geraint Wyn Davies plays Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle makes several appearances throughout the series but in his first appearance in the season one episode "Elementary, My Dear Murdoch," Inspector Brackenreid gives him the idea for what Sherlock Holmes story?

Answer: The Hound of the Baskervilles

Doyle's first appearance on the show was during the time when the real-life Doyle had killed of Sherlock Holmes but had not yet revitalized him. Doyle was in town when a murder is committed that has supernatural elements to it. Brackenreid then suggests that Doyle write a book about a supernatural dog, which would eventually happen (somewhat) in 1902 with "The Hound of the Baskervilles," Holmes' first appearance after his death.
