Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1998 there was a power cut throughout the Square which destroyed any hopes of any Christmas meals being cooked and eaten; who was to come to the rescue for all the programme's regulars and a number of extras?

Answer: Rosa

Rosa cooked half a dozen turkeys, one from each home, in the large ovens in her restaurant, and the population of the Square gathered there to eat their meals together. This happened while Bianca was giving birth to Liam in the Queen Vic around the corner.
2. Trees all over the Square caught fire during the Christmas celebrations in 1997 because of - what?

Answer: an angel decoration

Thankfully no one was hurt, but as one tree after another caught fire it certainly caused an amusing episode for the viewer!
3. Mark and Diane spent most of Boxing Day 1990 and the following days chasing around London looking for their mutual friend, Disa, after she left an unusual present on Diane's doorstep. What was left?

Answer: a baby

One of the things Mark and Diane did was to take the child to a hospital to check its health, skipping out again before Diane could undergo a check as well, as the child's 'mother'. They eventually found Disa and persuaded her to take her baby back again.
4. The Slater family's Christmas turkey was delivered still walking in the 2001 Christmas story, culminating in Billy being the turkey-catcher as it escaped. Another family had a very fresh turkey delivered for Christmas some years earlier - but which family was it?

Answer: the Fowlers

This was in 1991 and the blame lay with Pete; the looks on Pauline and Aruthur's faces was priceless!
5. Terry and Irene were just getting together as a couple in 1997, living in the same house by default with their respective children. As a romantic gesture, Terry had bought Irene a pair of lovebirds, but an accident befell one of them. Although Tony and Polly tried hard to put things right, they were not that successful. With what did they replace the missing bird?

Answer: a blue plastic budgie

As Terry took off the cover, the real lovebird flapped its wings and the plastic budgie slipped around to hang upside down from the perch. How the actors kept a straight face, I will never know. (This was in 1997.)
6. Peggy always planned for a special family Christmas, but invariably something went wrong each time. In 1999 she and Frank were all set to retire from the pub when her son Phil destroyed all their plans. Where were they when Phil dropped the bombshell that he sold half the Queen Vic for a fiver?

Answer: in the restaurant

The Mitchell/Butcher family were having dinner with the DiMarcos in their restaurant when Phil and Dan came in and told Peggy that she was not able to sell the entire pub to Ian as planned, because Grant had given his half to Phil, and he sold it to Dan for £5.
7. Two EastEnders have found themselves in police custody after drinking and driving over the Christmas holiday. Pat found herself on the wrong side of the law in 1992 - but who was the other?

Answer: Chris Smith

Chris was Mary's father, and was a taxi driver. On Christmas Eve 1987 he was out in his taxi with Annie in the back and crashed - little Annie was in hospital over Christmas Day, and Mary, whose relationship with her father was tenuous anyway, found it very hard to forgive him. Both Frank and Martin were involved with fatal car accidents over the Christmas season, but neither were accused of drink-driving.
8. In 1996 Billy Jackson was upset that his father was not able to spend the whole of Christmas Day at their house, and ran off. He was eventually found in a derelict house, but by whom?

Answer: Nigel and Claire

Alan had left the house after he had been conned into a relationship with Frankie, who had cleverly manoeuvred him after Carole's affair with David. He was to return to the family, however, and eventually they would move away together. Carole would return to the Square alone, after a final breakup of the marriage.
9. The 1986 Christmas episode was remembered for the divorce papers handed to Angie, but do you remember the disaster which took place in the Queen Vic that day?

Answer: a flood in the Gents

The men were required to go elsewhere (the alley mostly), although at least one used the Ladies, as Dot was seen coming downstairs after using the facilities in the flat, because there was a man in the Ladies.
10. Who was to turn up at the Christmas celebration at Pat's house in 1995, effectively destroying the festive season for many?

Answer: Frank

Frank had disappeared two years before, leaving Pat with his children (one of whom was still at school - Janine) and a whole parcel of debts. She and Roy had just started to live together as a couple when Frank returned, and there followed a great deal of explanation, regret and argument - even fisticuffs.
