Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This iconic TV character was first brought to the American consciousness in the late 1970s on a series about a small time oil company in Texas. The oft times morally bankrupt eldest brother of the Ewing clan set out to make money and destroy his competition, almost destroying himself in the process. Which Ewing brother was the no holds barred, snake in the grass, take no prisoners eldest son of Jock Ewing on "Dallas"?

Answer: JR

Jock Ewing's sons were John Ross "JR" Ewing, Jr., Gary Ewing, Robert James "Bobby" Ewing, and son out of wedlock, Ray Krebbs. Over the seasons JR had ruthless feuds with several rivals. Among those rivals were Cliff Barnes and Carter McKay. These men took turns trying to ruin one another, with JR being the most successful of the three. He cheated on wife Sue Ellen in practically a sporting fashion, though many affairs were to gain information and standing. His own sister in law shot him in an epic season finale, and he later tricked Sue Ellen into falling off the wagon just so he could have her committed. In the end, JR found himself all alone at Southfork, drinking and feeling helpless. He imagined himself to be haunted by a Jacob Marley like ghost played by actor Joel Grey. The series ended with a gun shot in 1991, and JR's fate was left unknown until a few TV movies were made later. In 2011, Larry Hagman began taping scenes as JR Ewing once more, for the "Dallas" reboot that began airing on the TNT Network in June 2012.

George and Jeb are two of the six Bush children born to President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Pierce Bush.
2. American audiences were introduced to the very definition of nature versus nurture when this eponymous cable TV character premiered in 2006. In an unusual, never before seen twist, our protagonist was also the epitome of an antagonist as a serial killer who killed other murderers! The character and series were based on novels by Jeff Lindsey, and both genres explored the evolution of darkness. Played expertly by Michael C. Hall, who became the killer that Showtime viewers couldn't help but to cheer for?

Answer: Dexter Morgan

On the series "Dexter", the state of human psychosis, and its eventual evolution, have been explored. Though, in many crime shows, only devolution of psychosis is ever addressed. Dexter witnessed the brutal murder of his mother when he was only four years old. He was trapped for several days inside a shipping container with her mutilated body and a sea of blood around him. Afterward, he was adopted by his mother's boss (she was his criminal informant), Detective Harry Morgan. Harry loved and protected Dexter, as well as provided him with a step-sister. When it became apparent that Dexter had homicidal impulses he couldn't control, Harry labeled them as his "Dark Passenger". He then taught Dexter how channel that rage into a more productive pursuit. In a ingenious "if can't beat them, join them" twist, Harry taught Dexter how to kill only proven murderers without detection. Dexter and his step-sister Deb went on to join the police force as well, with Dexter specializing in the thing that started him down the path of darkness- blood. He carried out his street justice, feeding the Dark Passenger along the way, whilst maintaining a false appearance of normality.

Dexter: "People fake a lot of human interactions, but I feel like I fake them all, and I fake them very well. That's my burden, I guess."
3. Brought forth from mediocrity, and barely mourned, vile and soulless, a bro-mance was formed. In the late 1990s, and created from the marvelous mind of Joss Whedon, vampire fans world wide reveled and reviled as they watched these two morally questionable demons plaguing and playing with Buffy Summers. Who was this pair who fell for the same gal, shared a derivation of the same human name and all the while falling into an entertaining love/hate bro-mance of their very own?

Answer: Angel and Spike

Liam was a scoundrel, lousy with the drink and ladies of questionable nature when he was elevated from the humdrum existence of 1750s era Galway, Ireland. He caught the eye of a beautiful vampire, traveling Europe from the New World. She told him to close his eyes, and she killed him.

The same words would haunt him some 240 odd years later. When he awoke, he was renamed Angelus, the demon with the face of an angel. Just over a hundred years later, a bored Angelus sired a young seer named Drusilla. Drusilla felt like a supporting player in the Darla and Angelus show, so in 1880 she sired Spike.

Born as William, he was a highly sensitive human man, writing poetry and suffering the mockery that came with it. He was nicknamed by his adult peer group as "William the Bloody" because the poetry was perceived as very poor quality.

His change to vampire unleashed an equally sensitive demon, whose morals and humanity took a deep backseat to over indulgence. These two vampires did not co-exist very well, but shared a few hilarious moments.

After Angelus was cursed with a soul and Spike chose to obtain his own, the pair truly bonded and obvious past affections arose on the series "Angel". They loved to torment each other, were highly jealous of Buffy's feelings for the other, and bonded over shared experiences of atonement. While each vampires' soul brought forth a more human version, they remained, at times, just as morally ambiguous as before they'd acquired them.
4. Rocking back into Mystic Falls with an "I'll eat who I wanna eat" attitude, this bad boy was the first to meet the doppelganger. He believed to have run into the selfish vampire skank who'd made him, Katherine. He was pleasantly surprised to find Elena Gilbert instead. Exquisitely selfish to his core, which vampire on "The Vampires Diaries" allowed his own manipulation to possibly cost him everything on that very night?

Answer: Damon Salvatore

Revealed in the show's third season finale, Damon was the first to meet Elena. He met her just as she'd broken up with Matt. He told her she wanted a relationship of passion and unpredictability and then, selfishly not ready to let his presence be known, compelled her to forget ever meeting him at all. That act of selfishness, one of many over the seasons, ended up hurting him the most.

After getting away with murder, torture, erasing minds, lying, cheating, stealing, and so forth, his lie cost him the human woman he loved.

When a choice was to be made on whether Elena would continue out of town toward Damon, or return to Mystic Falls to say goodbye to Stefan, Elena chose Mystic Falls. She told Damon on the phone that Stefan had come into her life at a time when she needed to feel alive again. And, that maybe if she'd met Damon first, he'd be the one she chose on this night. That was when it was revealed to the audience that she had met Damon first, been compelled to forget, and go on to be saved by Stefan from drowning.

After she told Damon that, she and Matt were run off of the road by Rebekah and into the river, once again leaving Elena in a battle for her life. When Stefan arrived in time to save her once more, she made him save Matt instead. Elena drowned in the river, causing the death of Alaric Saltzman, who was with Damon at the time. Damon knew if Alaric was dead, then so was Elena. He raced back to town in time to find out from Dr. Fell that Elena was now a vampire.
5. Malignant and wicked, or are they the same? It was in Denver where this devious diva played her game. She arrived in the second season, blasting like a pistol, where she tormented and tortured her rival Krystal. Who was this devilishly smart first wife of Blake Carrington, played by the ingenious Joan Collins?

Answer: Alexis

Joan Collins may have cornered the 1980s market on incivility in the art of love and war in her portrayal of Alexis Morell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan on "Dynasty". Yes, the woman married many times! She was introduced as the chief antagonist for Linda Evans' Krystal Carrington, who was Blake's wife at the time. Krystal seemed to epitomize all things benign and gracious. Well, over the years Alexis inspired some well deserved payback from her rival.

The women went down in TV history for an amazing fight scene that led to the ladies landing in a huge mud puddle as they continued to tussle. Fans loved Alexis and others loved to hate her, but either way the character was extremely popular for her bad bad ways. But, don't hold it against her. Joan's sister, Jackie Collins, has written many racy novels that Alexis herself could have been the main character.
6. Many tales of the morally ambiguous are rooted deeply in the bowels of jealousy and self loathing. In one small town called Tree Hill, audiences witnessed the ongoing moral and emotional decay of a man who fathered two amazing young men with two different women. Lucas and Nathan watched their father try to rationalize and defend actions like greed, lying, infidelity, abandonment, and finally murder. Who was this once loved, then shunned, Tree Hill citizen who did redeem himself before his death?

Answer: Dan Scott

Dan Scott was a beloved high school and college basketball star. In high school, he impregnated his girlfriend Karen Roe. He abandoned her for dreams of being a college star, and impregnated Deb Lee three months later. Cut to 15ish years down the road and we had Lucas and Nathan Scott, half brothers that were 3 months apart in age, both basketball players. Nathan was already a star player when the series began, but the older Lucas played his best games on the river court at that time. Dan fueled a hatred and rivalry in Nathan against Lucas, as he'd never been a part of Lucas' life.

He chose Deb and Nathan as his family, but Lucas had the better end of the deal. Lucas had Dan's older brother, his uncle Keith, as his father figure. Keith was in love with Karen, and the pair eventually found their way to each other.

Not long afterward, Keith was murdered by Dan in the high school, as Dan believed Keith had tried to kill him in the season prior. It was actually his ex-wife Deb who did this.

The truth of that act was discovered later, and Dan became the pariah in Tree Hill he had been heading toward. Nathan and Lucas became very close, and Nathan turned his back on his immoral father. In the show's final season, Dan was able to redeem everything by saving Nathan's life, and dying in the process. After his death, Dan was met by his brother Keith, and the two went into the ever after together. Paul Johansson played Dan, and Keith was played by Craig Sheffer.
7. She was a man stealing, con-artist retrieving, pot smoking demon child that arrived at the Walsh residence for the fifth season of "Beverly Hills, 90210". Her parents were old friends of Brandon's parents, and Little Miss Innocent wasn't what she used to be. Who was that sexy vixen that came to town and altered the lives of all she touched?

Answer: Valerie Malone

After the much needed exit of the resident drama queen Brenda Walsh at the end of season four, Valerie was brought in from Buffalo to stay with the Walshes. She immediately set her sights on Brandon Walsh, who initially viewed her as more of a kid sister, despite her overt sexiness. So, she feigned innocence and light, whilst charming Brandon's best friend Steve Sanders by day and seducing Dylan McKay by night. Tiffani-Amber Thiessen broke out of her former hit role as "Saved by the Bell's" Kelly Kapowski, when she expertly exploited every one of Valerie's vices in her five season tenure.

She used drugs, seduced Steve without consummating the relationship, seduced Dylan and enabled his worst behaviors, helped Dylan save his sister and rescue his fortune from Kevin and Suzanne, tricked a married man into paying for a non-existent abortion, seduced David and Ray Pruit away from Donna, continuously made plays for Brandon, used her best friend Ginger to make the tightly woven gang of friends trust her, went into business for herself, and finally revealed that she'd murdered her sexually abusive father. All the while, Thiessen was able to keep fans engaged with a disarming smile and inherent vulnerability. Valerie left town in season nine, and returned in the show's final episode to attend the wedding of David Silver and Donna Martin.

In later years, Tiffani dropped the "Amber" part of her name when she was credited with roles.
8. Lying, cheating, killing, stealing, about these, he's all but willing. In my years of watching television, this may be the character that showed me the most believable acts of duplicity and mayhem. As leader of an LAPD strike team working out of the Barn in Farmington, he made no secret of what he was capable of when he murdered one of his own partners in the very first episode. Played expertly by Michael Chiklis, who led his core team of Shane, Lem, and Ronnie on LA's mean streets?

Answer: Vic Mackey

"The Shield" was a show built to expose the rawness of cops deep in the trenches. The Strike Team were plainclothes detectives of the butt kicking variety. They dealt mostly with narcotics and guns, both of which led to murder and mayhem of every conceivable nature. Vic was an amoral man who felt he could do whatever he wanted to suit whatever end he felt was best for him and his friends and family.

He killed Detective Crowley in the show's premier episode with a drug dealer's gun by popping him right in the head. Shane was Vic's only witness to that crime. Shane was a shade of immoral just underneath Vic's level of amoral, and ended up killing another partner of theirs, Curtis "Lem" Lemanksy, by dropping a live grenade into his vehicle. Lem knew too much and Shane feared he'd crack under the pressure, sending them all to prison.

Despite consistent felonious behaviors, Vic seemed to win over fans as a hero type. He got the job done, but he did it at any cost. I watched and felt that he was a good cop who went way wrong.

He was already too far gone when the series premiered, but you sensed he had some goodness inside him. All of his dirty deeds caught up with him and in the seventh season was dealt a hand of justice. He was forced to agree to a suit and tie desk job and write reports. The show ended with him walking off, armed and rebellious, into the night.
9. Having your show air on HBO had its allowance, and he may have lived in the Garden State, but his world was no kind of paradise. In six seasons, viewers were able to love and hate this pro/antagonist as he made all the big decisions for his "family". Who made money, who earned money, which woman was worthy of his affections, how much cash to impart on his household, which man his daughter should date, who lived, who died, who went to prison, who got away with disobedience and who was whacked for the same. During his time on "The Sopranos", we were able to feel Tony's constant battle with morality as he dumped his emotional bile on his psychiatrist. Who was that doctor that aided the corrupt crime boss, as he confessed, flirted and sent veiled threats her way?

Answer: Dr. Jennifer Melfi

Tony began his visits to Dr. Melfi because he had ongoing panic attacks and bouts of depression. The life of a crime boss was never easy for Tony. And, while she tried to help Tony heal, and see the error of his ways, it was clear that Dr. Melfi was entirely uncomfortable with the way he responded to her on many occasions.

He made no secret he'd love to have a sexual relationship with her, as that was the only way he really knew how to relate to a woman- he wanted power over her. She held too much power and that made him entirely uncomfortable as well.

She battled her feelings for Tony, sometimes feeling extreme swings in such, as well as an addiction to alcohol. She was raped in season three and toyed with the idea of having her attacker killed by Tony's influence.

In the end, she never did reveal to Tony what had happened to her. Lorraine Bracco played Dr. Melfi. Bebe Neuwirth played Dr. Lilith Stern on "Fraser" and "Cheers". Dr. Lecter was the villainous evil genius of film, book and television, and Dr. Peter Silberman was the doctor in the "Terminator" movies and TV series "The Sarah Conner Chronicles".
10. Using an alias, or two, or three, can sometimes work, but it didn't with he. He infiltrated the crash survivors under the name Henry Gale, which wasn't the truth, and barely any of his tale. He needed a neurosurgeon, and Jack would do, so he arranged to take him, along with the other two. Jack saved his life, as he really had no choice. On "Lost", for who was it, that Michael Emerson gave a voice?

Answer: Benjamin Linus

Ben Linus lost his mother during his own birth. His father took him to the mysterious island to work with the Dharma Initiative. Ben committed an act of Dharmacide when he was a young man that left him in control and in collusion with the "others" living on the island.

In time, he left the island to recruit more folks to join him, in particular was his deception of Dr. Juliet Burk. He needed her help because women on the island were not able to carry babies to term. He used her once more when he kidnapped Jack, Sawyer and Kate at the end of season two.

He needed Jack to remove a spinal tumor, and he achieved that end. As the seasons wore on, we learned more about him. He was not all bad, but had lost his morality the more time he lived on the island.

He'd sent Ethan in to take Claire, who was pregnant in season one of the series. Charlie saved Claire, killing Ethan in the process. When the series ended, most of the characters were waiting in a Limbo like location for everyone to join them, and they all went into the light together. Ben was not ready to cross over, as he hadn't worked out all of his emotional garbage yet.
