Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first episode showed fire breaking out in Downton Abbey. In whose bedroom did the blaze begin?

Answer: Edith's

The fire gave perennial bad boy Thomas, the under butler, a chance to redeem himself by rescuing Lady Edith. He had, once again, been on the verge of being dismissed due to his bullying of Baxter, Lady Grantham's maid. Cora had realised what he was doing, and had threatened him with dismissal.

The fire also saw the departure of Jimmy, the footman, who was caught in a compromising position with a lady visitor to the Abbey when the alarm was raised.
2. Lady Mary made the rather daring decision to spend a weekend away with her suitor, Lord Gillingham. Which glamorous location did they choose for their assignation?

Answer: Liverpool

Mary ensured there would be no unwanted consequences by sending her maid, Anna, to the local chemist (pharmacy), which caused poor Anna great embarrassment. Following the event, Mary's ardour cooled considerably, although she had great difficulty in convincing Tony that his affections were no longer returned. Even Liverpool proved not to be far enough away, since Mary and Tony were seen leaving the hotel by Violet's butler, Spratt, who soon passed on the information to his employer. Mary was left having to explain herself to her grandmother.
3. Lady Rose met a new man, with whom she quickly fell in love. As ever, there was a complication, with which of these causing problems with her choice?

Answer: He was Jewish

The rather exotically named Atticus Aldridge was the man in question, with his father, Lord Sinderby, being a leading light in the Jewish community. The script did bring out the prejudices of some of the characters, a problem which was relevant in the period between the two major wars of the twentieth century. Lord Sinderby himself was very much opposed to the relationship, since he wanted his son to marry within the Jewish faith.

It was Rose's suitor in the previous series who was black, Edith's partner was married and Sybil, of course, who married Tom, the former chauffeur.
4. An art expert named Simon Bricker made his appearance in the series, showing an interest in both the family's paintings and Cora. Which actor played the role?

Answer: Richard E. Grant

Bricker appeared at Downton on several occasions, claiming that he wished to see a particular painting owned by the family. However, his real interest was in Lady Grantham, who allowed herself to be flattered by his advances and flirted with him. This did not go unnoticed by Robert, who discovered Bricker in Cora's bedroom, where Bricker had arrived uninvited. Robert threw him out of the house and went to sleep in his dressing room. The estrangement was short lived, although Robert decided that the painting would have to be sold, since it reminded him of his lack of trust in his wife.

Richard E. Grant made his breakthrough in 'Withnail and I' (1987) with co-star Paul McGann. He appeared with David Tennant in 'Bright Young Things' (2003) and with Daniel Day-Lewis in 'The Age of Innocence' (1993).
5. Much of the series was focussed on Lady Edith's child, who was being fostered by a local farmer. What was the little girl's name?

Answer: Marigold

Edith's constant visits to the farm to see her daughter led to problems between the farmer (who was aware of the truth) and his wife (who was not). The conflict, and the confirmation that Gregson was indeed dead, tipped Edith over the edge, leading her to leave Downton for London with the child. Cora eventually learned that she had another grandchild, and she and Edith concocted a story to allow the little girl to live in the house. Robert remained blissfully unaware until the end of the series, when he realised the resemblance between the girl and Gregson and Cora confirmed his suspicions.
6. Violet was unexpectedly reunited with a former acquaintance and suitor, who had been exiled from his home country. What nationality was he?

Answer: Russian

Prince Igor Kuragin had met Violet when she visited St. Petersburg for a wedding. It is implied that they may have had an affair, despite her being married. Following the revolution in Russia, several former members of the nobility were living in poverty in the UK, and the Prince was among them.

His wife had disappeared, although it seems that she may have been traced to Hong Kong. Kuragin made what can only be described as an indecent proposal to Violet in the final episode of the series.
7. Towards the end of the series, Tom Branson was contemplating a move to America. Which of these was his proposed destination?

Answer: Boston

During the series, Tom's dissatisfaction with his new way of life became apparent. Although his relationship with the schoolteacher, Sarah Bunting, had ended and she had moved away, her disapproval of the 'landed gentry' had reminded him of his roots. Having received a letter from his cousin, asking him to join him in a new business venture in Massachusetts, Tom was giving it serious consideration. Both Mary and Edith told him that they would miss him should he decide to go and any decision had been deferred until after Christmas - leaving the door open for further developments in the 2014 Christmas Special.
8. The problem of Anna's attacker, Green, refused to go away. Who was arrested for his murder in a dramatic scene at the end of the series?

Answer: Anna

A new witness had come forward to say that they had seen Green with another person immediately before his death. The police turned up at regular intervals to interview various people, including Lady Mary, Bates, Baxter and Anna. There was much soul searching over the ticket to London found in Bates's coat but Bates explained to Anna that the ticket was still intact, proving it had not been used.

This point had conveniently been missed by both Mrs Hughes, who found the ticket, and Mary, who had destroyed the 'evidence'. Following an identity parade, Anna was arrested on what can only be described as very flimsy grounds.
9. Another series, another death. Which of these minor characters will not be returning to our screens?

Answer: Isis, the dog

Sadly, the labrador belonging to Lord Grantham was found to be suffering from cancer. The dog was allowed to spend its last night in bed between Robert and Cora, and had not been replaced by the end of the season. The other characters were still around - Dr. Clarkson being the local medical expert, Mr Mason is Daisy's father-in-law and Lord Merton is Isobel's suitor.
10. The final episode saw the wedding of Rose and her partner. Which character had hatched a (failed) plot to prevent the nuptials?

Answer: Lady Flintshire, Rose's mother

If you have followed the series, you may recall that Rose was living at Downton as her parents were estranged. By this series, divorce was inevitable. Susan, Rose's mother, was particularly bitter and came up with a plan to take staged incriminating photos of Atticus to send to Rose in the hope that Rose would call off the wedding. Atticus assumed it was his father's doing, and it was Rose's father who discovered the truth by looking at the cheque book stub (remember cheque books?).

After a wobble, Rose went ahead with the wedding, although her mother did her worst by announcing at the Register Office that she and 'Shrimpie' were divorcing - a scandalous situation for the era.
