Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Christmas 2012 edition of 'Downton Abbey' saw most of the family spending a holiday in which part of the UK?

Answer: Scotland

The Crawleys visit family in the Scottish Highlands at the fictional Duneagle Castle. The scenes were actually filmed at Inverary Castle. The episode included several typically Scottish activities, including deer stalking, fishing and the dancing of reels. We were also reintroduced to Lady Rose, the daughter of the family, who made her first appearance in Series Three. Summer visits to Scotland are a traditional part of the British Royal Family's year, so the aristocratic Granthams would be likely to follow suit.
2. Peter Egan played the role of the Marquess of Flintshire in 'Downton Abbey'. What was the nickname of his character?

Answer: Shrimpie

'Shrimpie', so called as he was the youngest in the family, is married to Dowager Countess's niece, Susan, although not happily. As well as suffering from his shrewish wife, 'Shrimpie' has failed to modernise and confides in Robert that he will most likely have to sell the estate and castle to avoid bankruptcy. Robert appears to realise that he has been saved from this fate himself by Matthew and Tom's efforts to drag him into the modern world.
3. The majority of the servants attended a fair in which town in the 2012 'Downton Abbey' Christmas Special?

Answer: Thirsk

Only Bates, Anna, Moleseley and O'Brien have accompanied the family on holiday. The remaining servants, with time on their hands, went to a country fair at Thirsk. Mr. Carson declined to go, having told Mrs. Hughes that the younger members would enjoy themselves more in his absence. Jimmy is attacked by locals during the event, with Thomas coming to his rescue and suffering a severe beating.

There are hints that Jimmy's feelings towards Thomas are softening as a result.
4. Who was left alone in rather solitary splendour at Downton, while most of the family was on holiday during the 2012 Christmas edition of 'Downton Abbey'?

Answer: Tom

Tom was left in charge of the estate, probably to emphasise the fact that he is not really 'family'. He is definitely 'upstairs' though, with the servants serving his meals in the big dining room. A new maid, Edna, is encouraged by Tom's move from 'downstairs' to 'upstairs' and decides to try her luck by making a play for him.

Her efforts are nipped in the bud by Mrs. Hughes, who soon gives her the sack.
5. During the 2012 Christmas edition of 'Downton Abbey', the future of the estate was assured when Mary gave birth to a son.

Answer: True

In case we'd missed the significance, Lady Mary is shown telling Matthew that they 'had done their duty' and produced an heir. Matthew describes himself as feeling as if he'd swallowed a box of fireworks. Lady Mary had overdone things, by going away on holiday in the first place, despite being eight months pregnant.

Not only had she undertaken the long journey, in both directions, she had joined in the dancing while there, so the stage had been set for another tragedy, but all ended well despite the rather early birth.
6. During the 2012 Christmas edition of 'Downton Abbey', who made a fool of him/herself after swallowing a spiked drink meant for someone else?

Answer: Molesley

O'Brien had upset her fellow lady's maid, Wilkins, by helping the Marquess of Flintshire with her hair style. During the ghillies' ball, Wilkins offers to bring a drink for O'Brien, and adds a large helping of whisky to it. O'Brien takes only a small sip, but Molesley finishes off the rest with dire consequences.

He dances wildly, before collapsing into a chair, to the quiet amusement of Lord and Lady Grantham.
7. Which two characters were romanced during the 2012 'Downton Abbey' Christmas Special?

Answer: Mrs. Patmore and Mrs. Crawley

There were no hints of romance for Carson, Alfred, Mrs. Hughes, Daisy or O'Brien. Edith's editor suitor, the married Michael Gregson, did make an appearance only to be warned off by Matthew. Mrs. Patmore was pursued by a local tradesman, a supplier to the household, and it seemed that she would succumb to his advances. Mrs. Hughes discovered that he was trying his luck elsewhere at the same time, and broke the news gently to Mrs. Patmore.

The cook had realised for herself, though, that the main attraction was her cooking, and was far from heartbroken. Mrs. Isobel Crawley found herself the object of Dr. Clarkson's attentions, but gently deflected his hints before he made his planned proposal of marriage.
8. During their visit to the country fair in the 'Downton Abbey' Christmas Special of 2012, the Downton staff contested the locals in which event?

Answer: Tug of War

All the events listed are likely to be found at country fairs, but it was the tug of war which laid the basis for Thomas's beating. Tom, Thomas, Alfred and Jimmy are the Downton team, and Jimmy makes a bet that they will win. He has seen the Downton grocer, a hefty gentleman, and recruits him to anchor their team at the last moment, to the annoyance of the opposition.

The Downton team wins, giving Jimmy a healthy bonus. He is attacked by the local team, but escapes, leaving Thomas to suffer the beating on his behalf.
9. During the 2012 Christmas edition of 'Downton Abbey', the Marquess of Flintshire received a posting to which country?

Answer: India

As already mentioned, the Flintshires are in financial difficulties and the overseas posting is a form of escape. During the episode, news is received that they will be going to Bombay (now Mumbai). Although the couple are unhappy together, Susan explains to Cora that she has no choice but to soldier on and remain in her marriage. Arrangements are made for their daughter, Lady Rose, to move to Downton Abbey, leaving several options open for new story lines involving her.
10. The 2012 Christmas edition of 'Downton Abbey' brought a shocking and unexpected death. Which character will not be returning?

Answer: Matthew

Matthew was shown driving home from visiting the hospital, with the scene cutting to an oncoming lorry. Although not shown, it seemed that Matthew swerved to avoid a collision, with the car overturning. He was shown with his eyes open and blood trickling from his ear. Dan Stevens, who played the role, has decided that three series is enough and that he wishes to take his career in other directions.
