Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The fourth series of 'Downton Abbey' opened with the 'fly by night' disappearance of which character?

Answer: Miss O'Brien

The seeds for this change were sowed in the 2012 Christmas special, when O'Brien impressed Lady Flintshire during the family's visit to Scotland. Quite why she had to disappear without giving notice was not explained, but it paved the way for the return of Edna, newly qualified as a lady's maid, who had tried to seduce Tom Branson in the 2012 Christmas special.

She went further this time, slipping into his room late one night and then trying to convince him to marry her as there 'could be a child'.

Her plans were soon foiled by Mrs Hughes, leaving Lady Cora maidless again. A new character, Baxter, was introduced as the latest lady's maid, who was being manipulated by Thomas to give him information about the Crawleys' affairs. Of course, the real reason for the sudden disappearance of O'Brien was actress Siobhan Finneran's decision to leave the series.
2. Edith's married lover discovered he could obtain a divorce by moving to which European country?

Answer: Germany

Michael Gregson's wife had been declared insane, leaving him unable to divorce her under the legal system of the era. He had found that German law would mean he could file for divorce, but it would mean taking German citizenship, a difficult move to make so soon after the Great War. Gregson was able to curry favour with Robert, Lord Grantham, by saving him from a card cheat, raising Edith's hopes of a happy ending.

Unfortunately, having arrived in Germany, Michael disappeared, leaving poor Edith once again in limbo.
3. In a shocking, and somewhat controversial, turn of events which character was beaten and raped during the fourth series of 'Downton Abbey'?

Answer: Anna

There were several visitors at Downton, including Lord Gillingham and his valet, Green, played by former EastEnder Nigel Harman. Anna went to the kitchen, which was deserted since everyone was at the opera recital upstairs, to take some pills for her headache. Green took the opportunity to follow her, and tried to kiss her.

When she resisted, he hit her and dragged her into another room and brutally attacked her. Anna did not tell her husband immediately, and when she eventually admitted the attack, she insisted it was a stranger who had carried out the deed. Towards the end of the final episode, it was disclosed that Green had died under the wheels of a vehicle, with both Anna and Mary concerned that Anna's husband, Bates, might have been responsible.
4. The first black character to appear in 'Downton Abbey' was the singer with a band. Which actor played the role of Jack Ross?

Answer: Gary Carr

Lady Rose was particularly taken with Jack Ross, and decided that she was in love with him. Tom, having seen the pair together, passed his information on to Mary, who made a visit to London to see Jack. She told him that Rose was trying to shock her mother, a fact which Jack had worked out for himself, and he agreed that he would call off the 'engagement'.

He was genuinely in love with Rose, but did not want to ruin her life. Mary pointed out that her father was more likely to be worried by his occupation than by the colour of his skin, but approved of his decision. Gary Carr did all his own singing in the series.

The other actors have not, up to series four, been associated with the series.
5. Which character discovered that she was pregnant during series four of 'Downton Abbey'?

Answer: Edith

Poor Edith discovered her pregnancy after the disappearance of Gregson, leaving her to cope alone. Her aunt Rosamund (sister of Lord Grantham) discovered the secret and accompanied Edith to see a doctor who was willing to carry out an abortion, which was illegal at the time. Edith could not bring herself to go through with it, so Rosamund came up with a plan for Edith to accompany her to Switzerland.

She could have the child adopted and return home as if nothing had happened. The Dowager Countess saw through this immediately, and soon learned the truth, although no final decisions had been reached by the series end.
6. Which real life opera singer made a guest appearance in the fourth series of 'Downton Abbey'?

Answer: Kiri Te Kanawa

Although all the people listed are well known for their operatic prowess, it was Dame Kiri Te Kanawa who appeared in the role of Dame Nellie Melba. The presence of Dame Nellie caused some difficulty for Carson, in particular, who could not decide whether she should be treated as a guest or 'staff'. Dame Nellie Melba was actually Australian, not a New Zealander like Dame Kiri, but we Brits probably couldn't tell the difference.
7. Series four saw the departure of Alfred, one of the footmen. He left for London to train for which new career?

Answer: Chef

Alfred displayed a previously well hidden aptitude for cooking, and secured a position as a trainee chef at the Ritz Hotel, no less. Daisy, who had long been in love with him, was heartbroken while Ivy, with whom Alfred was in love, was still dazzled by Jimmy, the other footman.

The scales fell from Ivy's eyes when Jimmy made a move on her, giving Alfred new hope, but his proposal of marriage was declined by Ivy in the final episode. Both Daisy and Ivy sent him off, possibly never to be seen again.

His departure paved the way for the return of Molesley, the redundant valet for the much missed Matthew, albeit in a much lowlier position.
8. The newly widowed Mary was the object of much male attention in this series of 'Downton Abbey'. Which of these men made her a specific offer of marriage?

Answer: Lord Gillingham

Apart from Sir Anthony Strallan, who was the man who jilted Edith at the altar, all three of the other men became enamoured of Mary during series four. Anthony Foyle, Lord Gillingham, was the first on the scene and went as far as offering marriage, but Mary told him that she was still in love with Matthew and not ready for a new relationship. Gillingham then became engaged to another woman, but broke off the engagement again due to his attachment to Mary. Napier and Blake were staying at Downton, with Napier making his interest clear, while Blake was more indifferent to Mary, at least initially.
9. During season four of 'Downton Abbey', the estate expanded into livestock farming with which of these animals?

Answer: Pigs

Blake and Napier were at Downton to assess the estate's ability to survive, and one of their recommendations was for livestock to be introduced. Mary and Blake went to inspect the new arrivals after dinner, only to find them near death due to lack of water (they had managed to kick over a full, heavy water trough). Mary and Charles worked as a team, while getting plastered in mud, to revive the animals, which forced Blake to look at her differently from his original, disparaging, opinion.

By the final episode it was clear that he had added himself to the list of contenders for her hand.
10. The final episode of 'Downton Abbey's' fourth series saw hints of romance for which of these characters?

Answer: Each of them

Love was definitely in the air, with Tom having made the acquaintance of Sarah Bunting at a political meeting. Her political views seemed to reawaken his own dormant socialist feelings. He had become part of the family, even admitting to feeling love for them, while also realising that he was still an outsider. Isobel Crawley met Lord Merton, who showed a definite interest in her, and sent flowers via the Dowager Countess, thus ensuring that Violet was aware of the new turn of events. Finally, Molesley and Miss Baxter spent time together, with his (unspoken) support giving her the courage to refuse to give Thomas any information about the family when he requested it.
