Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lord Sinderby's butler, Stowell, proved to be a rather unpleasant character. Which actor portrayed him?

Answer: Alun Armstrong

Stowell was particularly snobbish towards Tom Branson, the former chauffeur, ignoring his requests and by-passing him when pouring wine, for example. This prompted Mary ask Thomas to 'do something', which caused problems for Stowell and Thomas himself. Stowell revealed his contempt for Lord Sinderby and, having drunk too much, divulged a secret which Thomas used to cause even more trouble.

Alun Armstrong is a well known character actor whose battered features have graced many films, television shows and theatre productions. Among his film credits are 'Braveheart' (1995) and 'Eragon' (2006). His television shows include 'Garrow's Law' and 'New Tricks', and the other actors listed as options all appeared in the latter show.
2. Thanks to Violet's efforts, Princess Irina Kuragin had been found and brought to England. She and her husband decided to settle in which European capital?

Answer: Paris

Jane Lapotaire made a guest appearance playing the rather ungrateful Irina, who was staying with Violet. Neither she nor her husband seemed very pleased to see the other, despite their years apart. Nonetheless, they agreed to move to Paris, where other Russian emigrés were living. Violet disclosed, to Isobel, a little more about the events in St. Petersburg, which had been touched on in Series Five, in particular her reasons for feeling a duty of care to the Princess.
3. Bates made a false confession to the murder of Green so that Anna could be freed. Which character found the evidence to prove that Bates could not have been in London?

Answer: Molesley

Anna was still in prison at the beginning of the episode with further evidence having been discovered which could have prejudiced a jury against her. Bates made the decision to confess, leaving various letters owning up to the murder before disappearing. Molesley, assisted by Miss Baxter, spent his spare time in York showing around a photo of Bates to various publicans.

He eventually identified the pub where Bates had eaten lunch, which proved that Bates could not possibly have been in London. Anna had been freed and not re-arrested by the end of the episode.
4. Robert was suffering from an unspecified ailment at the beginning of the episode, which was thought to be angina. It was later diagnosed as which, less threatening, complaint?

Answer: Ulcer

In the early part of the episode, Robert clutched his chest on several occasions while denying that anything was wrong to a concerned Cora. He had visited a doctor, while telling Cora it was business, but eventually she established the truth. Fortunately, it turned out to be an ulcer, not a heart problem, prompting Cora to put Robert on a diet, with no alcohol, at least until Christmas. Rather a lot was made of the incident, which may mean further developments in the next series.
5. One of the highlights of the Christmas Special was the long delayed wedding of Isobel Crawley and Lord Merton.

Answer: False

Sadly, the romance had stalled, since Lord Merton's sons were still refusing to accept Isobel and she would not marry him without their approval, not wishing to cause a family rift. Since Violet had also sent away her prospective paramour, Prince Kuragin, the two women commiserated with each other, both realising that they would be unlikely to have another chance of romance.
6. A potential new love interest for Mary was introduced in the Christmas Special. What was his name?

Answer: Henry Talbot

The early part of the Christmas Special featured a grouse shoot arranged by Lord Sinderby. Most members of the Crawley family had been invited, and Mary met Henry Talbot, who had been invited for the day. Since he was played by Matthew Goode, her interest in him is understandable and she even missed her breakfast to say goodbye to him. The character's interest in fast cars might be a little worrying, though. There were also hints that Edith might have a new suitor, in the form of the land agent for Brancaster Castle, where the shoot took place.

The other names listed are all roles played by Matthew Goode in different television shows.
7. Due to a rather embarrassing situation, we discovered the first name of Lord Sinderby. Which Biblical name was it?

Answer: Daniel

Rose made a faux pas by suggesting that the older members use their Christian names, prompting a withering response from the (Jewish) Lord Sinderby. Later, due to Stowell's indiscretion (mentioned in question one) and Thomas's meddling, a woman turns up with a child in tow. From Lord Sinderby's reaction, we can infer that the child is his, and the woman his mistress, but Rose saved the day by claiming the woman as her friend, there at Rose's invitation. Lady Sinderby took the child in hand and asked his name. On hearing that he was named Daniel, she commented that it was also her husband's name. Rose having spared him from exposure made Lord Sinderby realise that she was a worthy addition to the family, although keeping such a secret from both her husband and mother-in-law might not be the best thing Rose has done.
8. A little comedy was injected into the Christmas Special when Denker attempted to create which dish as proof that she could cook?

Answer: Chicken broth

Violet had mentioned that being able to cook chicken broth was the mark of a good maid, sending Denker into a panic, much to Spratt's joy. She turned to Daisy and Mrs Patmore for help, but even they were unable to teach her to cook. Spratt, Violet's butler, took great delight in her difficulties, pouring away the broth which Daisy had made and smuggled in. Denker eventually created a version of the broth which Violet tasted, before tactfully declaring that she wasn't hungry.
9. Although we had already been told that Tom Branson was headed for the USA, it seems he is not the only one. Which other character revealed plans to travel across the pond?

Answer: Lady Rose

Rose's husband, Atticus had been offered a job in America, which Rose informed her family he had accepted, meaning that the couple will probably not feature in the next series. In addition, Branson did not change his mind about leaving, and decided to take his daughter, Sybil, with him despite Robert's request that he leave her behind until he has settled.

The episode included two touching moments involving Tom - he, Mary and Edith held hands to remember Sybil (wife and sister) while Robert later made a speech to thank Tom for all he had done for the estate.
10. The Christmas Special featured a marriage proposal. Which character offered his hand in marriage, and to whom?

Answer: Carson/Mrs Hughes

After the hints laid in Season Five, Carson eventually asked Mrs Hughes to marry him. He had been pursuing his plan to buy a property jointly with her, only for Mrs Hughes to confess that she had no savings. Mrs Hughes had been supporting her mentally disabled sister for many years, which had taken all her spare money. Towards the end of the episode, Carson informed her that he had gone ahead with the purchase and had put the property in their joint names, before making his proposal.

Of the other options, Spratt and Miss Denker are enemies and Thomas's romantic interests lie in other directions. The other couple, Molesley and Miss Baxter, were the only other realistic candidates but not in this episode.
