Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After waking to find himself in the middle of the jungle and in a slight daze from the hatch implosion, Locke discovers Eko's scripture stick. A closer view of the writing on the stick is revealed (on the side opposite of that which had been previously seen). The central message is a quote from Genesis 13:14, which read, "Lift up your eyes and look _____."

Answer: north

Immediate déjà vu is experienced when the episode commences.
The opening of Locke's eye pans out to his waking consciousness in the middle of the jungle-- eerily reminiscent of the opening shot of the first episode of "Lost", when Jack awakens in the jungle immediately after the plane crash.
The corresponding moment continues when, just as Jack had heard a sudden noise in the brush (which was revealed to be Vincent), Locke sees Desmond frantically running by-- and is horrified to find that he is unable to speak.
Eko's scripture stick suddenly tumbles from tree above, where it had apparently been thrown after the hatch incident.
When Locke retrieves the stick, of which prior glances revealed only one side of the writing, the other half of the stick is clearly revealed. The central message reads, "Lift up your eyes and look north." Directly beneath the phrase is, "John 3:05", almost as if the message was "coincidentally" directed to Locke.
The phrase is a quote from "Gen 13:14" (which is also seen written on the stick).
Recall that north is the direction continuously attributed to the location of the Others on the island (from Michael's direction to Ben's reference to the "north shore"), and that Locke later sets out to find those captured.
Finally, the number sequence is seen inscribed on bottom of the writing.
At the site of the half-constructed church which Eko had begun weeks ago, Locke requests Charlie's help in his mission-- to "speak" to the island.
2. In Locke's flashback, he is seen driving down a dirt road in the rain and encountering a young hitch hiker named Eddie. Minutes later, just after the rain ends, Locke is stopped by a police officer. For what reason does the officer say that Locke was pulled over?

Answer: His tail light was out

After being pulled over Locke asks the officer if he had been speeding, to which the officer replies that the tail light was out. Locke and his new passenger are asked to step out of the vehicle, and Locke answers honestly about what he has in the back of the pickup-- guns, and groceries.
The officer notes that he is aware of Locke's picking up of a hitch hiker, but releases them.

Characters throughout the episodes have occasionally- coincidentally or not- crossed paths with other characters sharing the same name, sometimes in the flashbacks of other survivors. (The names Tom, Jason, and Brian are past examples.) In this case, Locke's previous flashbacks revealed that a man named Eddie had been the gate guard at his father's mansion.
In another subtle connection, Eddie is later seen wearing a t-shirt featuring Geronimo Jackson (the record of whom Hurley and Charlie had found in Desmond's music collection).
Unfortunately for Locke, his search for the acceptance of a "family" unit lead only to more disappointment.
3. Following the ritual in the "sweat lodge", including his consumption of the mysterious hallucination-inducing paste, Locke has a perplexing vision involving the Sydney airport and his fellow survivors. All of these eerily intricate scenes are true about his bizarre-- and highly symbolic-- vision, except which?

Answer: Jack and Kate speak to one another

Locke had once concocted a similar-- or possibly the same-- paste for Boone, made of unknown substances. The result was that Boone had vivid hallucinations of Shannon being killed by the island "monster", revealing Boone's true mixed feelings of misery and relief.
After consuming the paste, Boone reappears to Locke in a ghostly image (yet seeming very real). After reintroducing Locke to his wheelchair, which had in reality been burned long ago, Boone refers to himself as the "sacrifice the island demanded". (Locke had referred to Boone by these words shortly after Boone's death, while trying to rationalize what fate the island had in store for them.) Boone proceeds to guide Locke on a symbolic journey through Sydney airport in order to identify Locke's mission to save an endangered fellow survivor.
Charlie, Claire and Aaron are in line and looking happy together, and Boone dismisses them as "fine, for now".
Sun (who appears to be holding a red gift bag) is arguing with Jin in Korean, while Sayid seems to mediate from behind.
Desmond is seen dressed as a pilot and is followed down the escalator by three beautiful flight attendants-- apparently he is only "helping himself".
Sawyer and Kate are standing together and speaking flirtatiously while Jack removes his watch to pass through the metal detector under the careful surveillance of none other than Ben, who wands him (bearing the Dharma logo on his right shoulder). Boone advises that there is nothing Locke can do for this group-- yet.
Locke becomes more anxious as the journey continues, until finding himself struggling to the top of a tall escalator-- unable to walk-- and finding both he and Boone bloody, with Eko's scripture stick lying in a pool of blood.
Boone warns that Locke must "clean up his own mess" first.
4. Which is the very last image Locke sees before looking away from the fire and exiting the tent?

Answer: A snarling polar bear

Locke sees the wheelchair rising by itself, wheels still spinning, just before beginning the journey with Boone. The last image he sees of Boone is what Boone looked like after the crash of the Nigerian plane, shortly before he died. Eko's stick indicates to Locke that his mission is indeed to save Eko's life.
Just before Locke comes back to reality and looks away from the fire, the brief image of a vicious-looking polar bear flashes before our eyes. (This may indicate that at least part of what Locke had witnessed in the dream sequence was premonition, as the image of the bear is what later occurs when Locke torches the bear in the cave.)
Locke tears himself away from the visions by exiting the tent.
Locke finds that he is able to regain the use of his voice in order to tell Charlie that he needed to save Mr. Eko's life. Boone had promised that Locke would be able to speak again when he had "something worth saying".
5. While Charlie and Locke traverse the jungle on the hunt for Eko (who Locke believes to have been taken by a polar bear following the hatch implosion) they find all but which of the following clues?

Answer: Fresh bear tracks ( paw prints)

The vision of the polar bear in Locke's dream sequence first indicated the possible fate of Mr. Eko.
While on the hunt in the jungle with Charlie, two tufts of fur and a freshly killed boar bearing large claw marks mingled on the trail with a pool of blood and Eko's cross necklace indicate the vision was correct.
How the bear managed to capture and drag Eko to its cave following the explosion is unknown, along with several other events surrounding the destruction of the hatch.
6. After entering the cave, Locke finds numerous objects to indicate that it is indeed the den of an animal. Among the evidence found are the remains of many bones and a cloth bearing the recognizable Dharma logo of which symbol/station?

Answer: The Pearl

Locke carefully prepares himself to enter the cave by smearing himself with mud and carrying a torch and hairspray.
Inside the lair, Locke steps over several piles of human and animal bones-- apparently, the resident of the cave had dwelled there for quite some time.
One skeleton is beneath a small piece of dirty, torn cloth with the Dharma logo with the Pearl symbol (the empty white center). Locke probably recognizes this symbol, since he and Eko had discovered the observation/monitoring center which composed the Pearl Station.
Locke also retrieves a broken toy dump truck from the rubble, perhaps indicating that some or all of the bones belonged to children.
This is the third polar bear appearance on the island since the arrival of the survivors.
7. While in the bear's lair, a dangerous confrontation occurs between Locke and the polar bear. In order to save Mr. Eko's life, what does Locke do to fend off the angry bear?

Answer: Throws a rock at the head, then torches it with a flame

After finding Eko in the cave, barely conscious, Locke is confronted by the angry bear from his vision. When the bear attacks, Locke first throws a fist-sized black rock at its head. He then proceeds to take out the hairspray and torch the bear with the flame from his torch.
After dragging Eko successfully from the cave, Locke reassures Charlie that the bear had been burned badly and probably would not be coming after them any time soon.
The last polar bear to have been seen on the island seemed to almost come out of Walt's comic book, and had been stabbed in the face by Michael while he had defended his son.
The first polar bear had been killed by Sawyer on the group's first trek on the island.
Danielle Rousseau's prior mentioning of "the bears", as well as the visible displacement of the polar bear on a tropical island, initially indicated that the bears were likely part of the Dharma zoology station-- possibly the previous inhabitants of the outdoor cages in which Sawyer and Kate now reside.
8. After encountering one another in a slightly untimely situation in the jungle, Hurley and Desmond find the remains of the hatch implosion. Hurley enquires about the events surrounding the explosion as the two return towards the camp, prompting a confused response from Desmond. Upon hearing about the failsafe key (which had been in the hatch all along) Hurley responds, "That seems kind of __________."

Answer: convenient

After hearing about the failsafe key which had been in Desmond's possession all along, Hurley remarks that it seemed quite "convenient" and inquires why Desmond had not used it. Desmond replied, "I didn't know what would happen."
Since its discovery and exploration at the start of season two, the Swan hatch station had played an increasingly central role in the lives of the survivors of the island after being abandoned by Desmond. The facility had served for a kitchen, Laundromat, medical center, sleeping quarters, and even entertainment-- not to mention the monitoring of the button requiring at least one occupant with constant vigilance.
Desmond and Hurley now discover that the compound had imploded within itself after the electromagnetic explosion, and was reduced to a sunken hole in the ground. Hurley notes to Desmond the incredible fact that, while the hatch had been completely destroyed, Desmond had somehow not imploded with it.
9. While speaking apologetically to an injured and unconscious Eko, Locke examines the situation regarding Jack, Kate, and Sawyer and is perplexed by his own thoughts. He receives an unexpected response from Eko, who replies, "You can still protect them. You can still ____ them."

Answer: save

Eko is unconscious when Charlie leaves to get water from a stream, and apparently still unconscious upon Charlie's return. As Locke speaks his thoughts aloud, however, Eko suddenly appears to be awake and confirms to Locke that Locke can still find and save the captives. He adds that Locke will indeed find them-- after all, Locke is a hunter.
Eko's mentioning of the phrase brings Locke back to his flashbacks and likely indicates that Eko's reassurance was only a part of the prolonged effects of Locke's paste.
In any case, Locke is confident in the mission the island had set for him.
10. Does Locke tell anyone about having seen Boone in his vision?

Answer: Yes

On the way back from rescuing Eko from the bear cave, Locke reveals to Charlie that he had seen visions of Boone in the "spirit tent". Locke admits to Charlie that had been wrong about the hatch, and had to clean up his own mess as Boone had said.

The direct effects of the bizarre electromagnetic explosion-- the violet sky and the shockwave which resonated over the island a day earlier-- have yet to be seen.
Early indications of some effect are seen in Desmond after Desmond reassures Hurley that Locke will save the survivors taken captive, and speaks of a speech Locke had not yet given. In fact, Desmond had not spoken to or seen Locke since the explosion.
When Locke later gives his speech to the group, he restores a sense of leadership that Jack had held and promises that Kate, Jack and Sawyer will be found and brought back. Hurley experiences an eerie sense of déjà vu after Desmond's mentioning of Locke's speech comes true.
Here we are introduced to two new survivors from the group-- Nikki and Paulo-- who aid Locke, Claire and Charlie in getting medical supplies for Mr. Eko.
Meanwhile, Hurley continues to watch with a hint of curiosity and wonder as Desmond stands alone on the shore and tosses rocks out to sea.
