Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is most accurate about Ben's birthplace?

Answer: 32 miles from Portland

Contrary to what he has been saying all along, Ben wasn't born on the island, but in a forest, 32 miles away from Portland. His birth was premature and it caused the death of his mother Emily, something that his father, Roger, would never forgive Ben for. During this incident, Roger met a couple, Horace and Olivia, who would play an enormous part in Roger and Ben's future life.
2. Who was the man responsible for bringing Ben and Roger to the island?

Answer: Horace

About ten years after Ben was born, he and his father were taken to an island, where the Dharma Initiative had already begun their experiments to save the world. Horace was the responsible for the arrival of the two men, as he was aware that they were having economical problems.

After being welcomed with the classic "Namaste" and watching an orientation video, Roger was notified that he would be a janitor (work man) and that he and his son would live in the Barracks.
3. What was the main point of discussion in Ben's class?

Answer: Volcanoes

During one of Ben classes, in which the students were discussing volcanoes and contrasting them to the island's own volcanic activity, a shooting is suddenly heard. As if it was a regular event, everyone assumes their positions and simply wait. Annie, one of Ben's companions, tries to calm him down by saying: "It's only the hostiles". That night, Ben overhears his father and Horace discussing the previous event when, all of a sudden, he hears strange noises in the window.

He slowly turns around and sees a woman staring directly at him: it's his mother.

The vision, however, doesn't last long, as Roger quickly enters the room and orders Ben to go to bed.
4. Which code did Ben use to deactivate the sonic fence?

Answer: 54439

During his birthday, Ben shares a happy moment with his friend Annie but, when he returns home, he is met with a terrible sight, as his father is lying in the couch, completely drunk. When he wakes up, Ben reminds him that it is his birthday but Roger quickly replies that he is not willing to celebrate the day Ben "killed" his mother.

These words prompt Ben to run away from home. He reaches the sonic fence in some minutes and, surprisingly, he sees his mother on the other side of it. Ben is willing to reunite with her but the woman keeps him from crossing the fence, as it is not his time yet. Without completely understanding his mother's words, Ben turns around and goes home.

However, he returns some time later and, after deactivating the fence with a five-digit code (54439), he exits the Barracks. Ben starts looking for his mother in the jungle, but instead he runs into one of the hostiles, who happens to be Richard Alpert.

After exchanging some words, Ben asks him if he can join them, to which the stunned man replies that he might, but it will take some time and a lot of patience.
5. How many Dharma members (other than Ben) who inhabited the Barracks survived the purge?

Answer: 0

Many years later, Ben and Roger are loading some beer in one of the Dharma vans when the first one confronts the other for forgetting his birthday again. Roger, a bit embarrassed, proposes him to go for a drive, to share some time together; Ben agrees.

After talking for a few minutes about his mother and the fact that he had to bear with his father's attitude for all these years, Ben says goodbye, puts on a gas mask and sets off a gas canister. Roger's face starts bleeding and he dies in a few seconds. Ben, then, returns to Barracks and discovers that every single Dharma member is dead: the purge Mikhail had mentioned to the survivors when they visited the Flame had finally taken place.

After telling Richard not to pick up his father's body, he watches the hostiles carrying the dead bodies of the people he had lived with for so many years and then, without any remorse, he leaves with the former enemy.
6. Which of these was not present the moment Locke returned to the "others" camp with his father's body?

Answer: Mikhail

Ben is discussing with Richard regarding Juliet's tape, which is mysteriously missing, when Locke arrives, carrying Cooper's body. After leaving the corpse in front of Ben, Tom and Richard, he announces that he has passed the test and now it's time for some answers. Mikhail was not present at that moment but he showed up some time later, with the intention of communicating Ben the sudden arrival of Naomi to the island.

It is then that he notices Locke's presence and, after criticizing the tone of authority he is using when talking to Ben, he receives a terrible blow from the angry hunter, who is not disposed to let anyone stop his quest for answers.
7. When talking to Locke, Ben mentions a very important aspect about Jacob's visitors. He says: "This is not a man you go and see; this is a man who ________ you."

Answer: summons

One of the first revelations Ben makes to Locke is that all the "others" answer to one man, whose name is Jacob, but the only one who actually can talk to him is Ben, as he is the only remaining person that was born on the island. Locke then demands to be taken to the real leader, but Ben refuses to do so, telling him that Jacob is not a man you go and see, but a man who summons you. However, after noticing that Locke's determination may put his position in the "others" hierarchy in danger, he gives up and decides to show John the man behind the curtain.
8. What are the only words we hear from Jacob in this episode?

Answer: Help me

After a long trek through the jungle, John and Ben arrive to an old withered house. Once they have left behind all their technological gadgets, the two enter and Ben introduces John to Jacob. The hunter, however, is astonished to see that there is no one but the two of them in the house and that Ben has apparently lost his mind. Ben, nonetheless, seems totally sure that Jacob is accompanying them. Disappointed, Locke decides to leave but, as soon as he opens the door, he hears two words in a voice different than Ben's: "Help me". Locke, thinking that the other is toying with him, decides to confront him, but the moment he turns on his flashlight, the house starts to shake and things, fly all over the place, while a shadowy figure appears where Jacob is supposed to be.

A panicked Locke leaves the place and is shortly followed by Ben, who stares at the shocked and tells him: "That was Jacob".
9. Where does Ben take Locke after visiting Jacob?

Answer: The place where the victims from the purge were left

After the disastrous visit to Jacob, Ben decides to take Locke to one more place: the spot were the Dharma member's bodies were left after the purge. Ben reveals John his past as a member of the initiative and how he was smart enough to choose the right side when the "hostiles" and the "Dharmas" collided.

Then, without previous warning, Ben shoots John in the thorax. Still pointing his gun at him, Ben asks him what the words that he heard from Jacob were, to which an agonizing Locke replies with the truth. Having found out what he wanted to know, Ben says "I certainly hope Jacob saves you" and then, just like he abandoned his friends in the past, he leaves Locke to die.
10. Who is the first person to whom Sawyer reveals Juliet's secret?

Answer: Sayid

After being notified by Locke that Juliet's real intentions are discovering which woman are pregnant, so the "others" could raid their camp and kidnap them, Sawyer returns to the beach and tells the news to Sayid. The two try to confront Juliet, but when they go to her tent, she is gone. Kate, who is nearby, tells them that Juliet left with Jack after she told them about Naomi. Sayid is not too happy about this, but decides to ignore it for the moment and finally reveal the identity of the new visitor to everyone. That night, the survivors held a meeting, in which they try to decide what to do about Juliet.

In that moment, the woman reappears, accompanied by Jack, and tells them to turn over the tape. It is then that everyone discovers Ben's plan, which consists on attacking the camp and taking Sun and all the women that Juliet thinks are adequate for the experiments. Jack reveals that he was aware of the "others" intentions and the only reason he kept the secret was that he didn't know what to do.

However, now all the survivors know what they are up against, so it's time to join and face the upcoming threat.
