Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Former "Family Feud" host John O'Hurley got a surprise when he asked a contestant, during a Fast Money round, to name a state that has a direction in its name. Which U.S. state with no direction in its name did the contestant respond with?

Answer: Arizona

John O'Hurley took over for Richard Karn as the host of "Family Feud" in 2006, and remained on the show until 2010. In all of the show's incarnations, though, Fast Money has been fodder for some great game show bloopers. In this particular blooper, though, the man's partner bailed him out by giving the number-one answer to the question, North Dakota, and getting enough points to win Fast Money.
2. "The Price Is Right", one of the most beloved game shows in history, had its share of bloopers. One involved a contestant who, while playing in Contestant's Row, gave a ridiculous bid of $9,000 for a pair of what common recreational items?

Answer: Surfboards

The unflappable Bob Barker, who hosted "The Price Is Right" for over 30 years, had some fun with the contestant who thought that surfboards cost $4,500 each. He said to her, with the audience regaled in laughter, "I've got one (a surfboard) that I'm going to give you - and I'm only doing this 'cause it's you - I'm going to give it to you for thirty-nine hundred dollars!"
3. Whammies weren't the only things contestants tried to avoid on "Press Your Luck". They also tried to avoid giving bad answers to questions, when they tried to earn spins. One contestant, however, gave a bad answer to this musically-themed question: "'If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere.' What city am I talking about?" What U.S. city did the contestant incorrectly answer with?

Answer: Phoenix

Featured on CBS's lineup from 1983 to 1986, "Press Your Luck" was best known for its money-grabbing villains, the Whammies, and for the late Michael Larsen's incredible game that earned him well over $100,000 when he used his knowledge of the board to avoid them.

But a contestant named Jimmy gave the hilariously bad answer of Phoenix, the capital of Arizona. The question, of course, referenced a song lyric sung by the late great Frank Sinatra in the song "New York, New York".
4. Sometimes, it's the game show host who is the victim of a blooper. Which of the following hosts became part of blooper history, when he fell down the stairs on the set of "The Big Showdown"?

Answer: Jim Peck

Running on ABC from December 23, 1974 to July 4, 1975, "The Big Showdown" is best known for host Jim Peck's slip-and-fall near the bottom of the spiral staircase that led him onto the set. As he laughed at his misfortune, he said, "Sure! You people would applaud a lynching!"

Peck hosted a number of short-lived game shows during his career, including "Hot Seat" and "Second Chance" (the forerunner of the better-known and longer-lived "Press Your Luck"), and was a substitute host on the long-running "The Joker's Wild".
5. Minor celebrity Kato Kaelin turned in a gem of a blooper during an appearance on the American version of "The Weakest Link". When asked, "the law of what organization states that its members are 'brave, clean and reverent'", Kaelin embarrassed himself, and earned the ire of host Anne Robinson, with what incorrect answer?

Answer: Alcoholics Anonymous

Airing on both NBC and in syndication during the period spanning April, 2001 and May, 2003, "The Weakest Link" was hosted by Anne Robinson (who also hosted the British version) and by George Gray, an American comedian, during its run. Although Kato Kaelin had experience in front of the camera in minor roles, he didn't achieve notoriety until he testified for the prosecution in the infamous O.J. Simpson murder trial in 1995. At the time of the murder of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, Kaelin was staying in a guest house at the Simpson property and was there the night the murders occurred.

The correct answer to the question, of course, was the Boy Scouts.
6. Sometimes, a planned prank can liven up the proceedings of a game show. In 1997, on the April Fool's edition of the hit show "Jeopardy!", which other well-known game show host gave Alex Trebek the day off and surprised the contestants by hosting the show?

Answer: Pat Sajak

Both "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" are taped at the Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, a suburb of Los Angeles. So it was only fitting that Pat Sajak take over the hosting duties of "Jeopardy!" that day, while Alex Trebek, who had done some substitute hosting of "Wheel" over the years, showed up on Sajak's set along with his wife. (Both Sajak and model Vanna White ended up playing for charity that day.) Four of the categories in the first round of "Jeopardy!" that day were related to either "Wheel" or Pat Sajak himself - Buy A Vowel, Lose A Turn, Before & After, and Say "Jack".
7. When it was hosted by Bob Eubanks in the 1970s and 1980s, "The Newlywed Game" yielded a bevy of bloopers. One such blooper occurred when Eubanks asked the male contestants to tell them what their favorite wind instrument was. With what decidedly non-wind instrument did a contestant named Wally answer, much to the audience's amusement?

Answer: Guitar

Created by game show producer Chuck Barris, who also ran such programs as "The Gong Show" and "The All-New Treasure Hunt", "The Newlywed Game" gave freshly-married couples (typically married less than two years) the opportunity to win a suite of fabulous prizes.

Many of the bloopers were much more risqué, including one infamously involving a lady named Olga and her response to the question about the weirdest place she had ever had the urge to make love. So this particular blooper was tame by comparison.
8. In the British version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" all ten contestants vying to get into the Hot Seat missed this question: Starting with "Stop", put the traffic light sequence in order according to the British Highway Code.

Answer: True

The British traffic signal methodology differs from that found in the United States in one important aspect - an intermediate phase between Stop (red) and Go (green) that alerts the driver to get ready to go. This intermediate phase is signified by having both the red and amber lights on at the same time, before the signal goes green.

Before revealing the correct sequence, host Chris Tarrant said, "If any of our contestants have got that wrong, don't let them give you a lift home!" Amazingly, none of the ten contestants got it right.
9. The Tom Bergeron version of "Hollywood Squares" featured an incredibly hilarious five-square win that took seven questions to settle, in 1999. Which celebrity occupied the upper right corner of the game board - the final square to be won - during this game?

Answer: Gilbert Gottfried

Each of the first four incarnations of "Hollywood Squares" - hosted by Peter Marshall, Jon "Bowzer" Bauman, John Davidson and Tom Bergeron - produced some memorable bloopers. But this particular game created gales of laughter as Gilbert Gottfried punctuated each missed question with the exclamation "you fool!". Contestants David (the X-player) and Valerie (the O-player) couldn't get an answer right, until Bergeron asked the question, "the word 'smog' comes from what two words?" David agreed with Gottfried's answer - smoke and fog - ending the game.
10. One of the most notorious game show bloopers of all time occurred on "Family Fortunes", the British version of "Family Feud". In the Big Money round, contestant Bob Johnson famously used which bird as the answer to three straight questions?

Answer: Turkey

Host Max Bygraves couldn't help but be beside himself when Bob Johnson answered these three questions with "turkey":

1. Name something you take with you to the beach.
2. The first thing you buy in a supermarket.
3. A food often stuffed.

As it turned out, there was a technical problem with the headphones placed on Johnson while he was backstage awaiting his turn at Big Money. The headphones cut out during the third question, to which Johnson's partner answered with "chicken" (and earned 58 points). Johnson thought that he was hearing the answer to the first question, which led him to answer "turkey" to the first three questions he heard. Johnson didn't score on the first two questions, but he did earn 21 points on the third one.
