Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sees White Walkers
Answer: Night's Watch Will
In the opening scene of "Game of Thrones" we follow three ragtag men on horses through a tunnel and out the other side of a massive ice wall, then into a creepy, cold forest. The Night's Watch ranger Will (Bronson Webb) spots rising smoke, crawls on his belly toward it and spies a terrible thing. He tells the two others it wasn't Wildlings did this so let's get out of here; but the boss insists they go investigate. What a very bad idea! If Watchman Will knew what you know, he'd cry, "Somebody stop me!" before he sees the White Walker.
Season one episode one, "Winter is Coming", was released on HBO in 2011, based closely on the novel "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin. Season one was filmed mostly in Northern Ireland and Malta. Bronson Webb is a supporting character in more than 25 films and TV shows.
2. Climbs Winterfell
Answer: Brandon
Brandon Stark is ten and loves to scale the walls of his Winterfell castle home. On the day King Robert and the Lannisters arrive, Brandon's mother Catelyn catches Bran coming down off the roof. "How many times have I told you NO climbing?" Brandon promises he will climb no more. Sadly, we know how true that is. "Somebody stop me!" Bran might plead, if he knew what we know -- it will cost him dearly when he breaks that promise.
Brandon Stark is played by Isaac Hempstead Wright. Michelle Fairley plays his mother Lady Catelyn Stark.
3. Flirts with Joffrey
Answer: Sansa
Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) has come north to Winterfell with his father King Robert. The King wants Joffrey to marry Sansa (Sophie Turner), who is thirteen, the daughter of Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark. King Robert tells Ned, "We'll join our Houses". Sansa makes eyes at Joffrey because he's "SO handsome", and begs her mother Catelyn's permission to move to King's Landing and marry him. "It's all I've ever wanted", she says.
"Game of Thrones" fans know there's nothing Sansa would want LESS, if she could see who Joffrey really is. "Somebody stop me!", she'd beg.
4. New Hand of the King
Answer: Lord Eddard
In episode one season one, King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) travels from King's Landing far north to Winterfell, to tell his closest friend Lord Eddard Stark (Sean Bean), "I would name you the Hand of the King". It seems Ned plans to decline, since he tells his wife, "I am a Northerner. I belong here with you". Then a raven arrives with bad news, and Lord Eddard is advised only he can protect the endangered King, so he must accept, and go. "Somebody stop me!" he might have commanded, had he foreseen the sinister forces he and his King come up against, and how his Old Ways honor fails to shield the Starks.
"Winter is Coming" won a "Best Episode" award, and Sean Bean (Ned) won "Best Actor" and "Best TV Hero", among others. Sound, visual effects, directing, make-up and music for this episode also earned recognition.
5. A shove for love
Answer: Jaime
Jaime Lannister is twin brother to Cersei, who was married off to King Robert in her youth. Jaime and Cersei have an important secret between them, which the young Brandon Stark accidentally discovers. "The things I do for love," Jaime says, shoving the boy out the castle window, presumably to his death. Jaime thinks he has solved a problem and protected a secret, but in truth he would yell, "Somebody stop me!" if he could see the future. The Starks will not take this lying down--their countermoves and strategies of others unseen in the shadows will cast Jaime into great peril, heartbreak and hardship. And perhaps awaken great power in the boy.
Jaime is played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Lena Headey plays Cersei.
6. Weds sister to Drogo
Answer: Viserys
Across the Narrow Sea in Pentos, Viserys Targaryen trades his little sister Daenerys to the "savage" Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa), for an army of 40,000 men. Viserys plans to take the Iron Throne he's "waited 17 years" to claim. When his sister is unwilling he threatens, "You don't want to wake the dragon, do you?". Viserys believes he's a fierce dragon. Yet he's such a sniveling, cowardly bully, possibly mad, would anyone save him from his fate if he demanded that somebody stop him? Unlikely. Then Viserys will drown in gold, the mighty Drogo simply stares, and Daenerys sets upon an ambitious and bloody path.
Harry Lloyd is Viserys Targaryen. Emilia Clarke plays the awesome Daenerys. Jason Momoa was a model before he took up acting.
7. Invites Jon to Watch
Answer: Uncle Benjen
Uncle Benjen, Lord Eddard's brother, arrives at Winterfell as a buffer against the visiting Lannister's, enemies of the Starks. He greets Jon Snow (Kit Harington) with great affection, asking why Jon isn't at the feast. Jon explains that his step-mother Catelyn said the presence of "a bastard" might insult the King. "Well, you are always welcome on the Wall. No bastard was ever refused", Benjen says, smiling.
This so reinforces Jon's desire to join the Night's Watch, he wants to go now! Benjen assures Jon they will talk about it later. Let Jon Snow peek ahead and he might scream, "Somebody stop me!" before he takes a step toward the great Wall. That way lies terror and grief he has never imagined. Faced without his uncle Benjen (Joseph Daniel Turner Mawle)?
8. "My Jon was murdered!"
Answer: Lysa
Lysa Arryn (Kate Dickie) took her son Robin and fled King's Landing after the death of her husband Jon, the Hand of King Robert. It seemed Jon died of a sudden illness. From the safety of the castle Eyrie Lysa sends a message to her sister Catelyn. Lysa accuses the Lannisters of murdering Jon Arryn, and threatening the life of King Robert! How brave to risk everything to get this word to us, Catelyn tells Ned.
But "Oh, somebody stop me, before I send the message, before I murder a loved one!", Lysa would say. If she were sane. If she could see the floodgate of betrayal and death she opens. If she saw her own end.
9. To dad, a bastard
Answer: Tyrion
Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance) lost his wife in childbirth when his second son Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) was born, and he blames Tyrion, who was also born a dwarf, shaming the father and marring his legacy. Tyrion feels the sharp dagger of his father's disgust and hatred. Finding no way to gain approval, he simply becomes a "drunk and a lecher".
While visiting Winterfell Tyrion encounters the bastard Jon Snow, and implies they have a debased position in common, since "All dwarves are bastards in their father's eyes".
But "Somebody stop me!" Tyrion might joke, drunken and sarcastic, if he foresaw in his future one murderous arrow.
10. Eat, drink and whore
Answer: King Robert
King Robert Baratheon asks Lord Eddard to be his sworn protector as the Hand of the King, but adds that in truth he needs Ned to, "run my kingdom while I eat, drink and whore myself to an early grave".
"Somebody stop me!" that King would roar, cursing and swinging a sword over his fat belly, if he knew that's exactly what happens, and soon. If he knew what we know, the King could end the Game before it begins, but his gluttony and sloth instead hands the Starks over to dark forces, and begins the ominous Game to win the Iron Throne in earnest.
