Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Frey slays Starks
Answer: Red Wedding
Although traditional protocol protected guests from harm, during the War of the Five Kings at the castle of Lord Walder Frey several Starks and many of their men were massacred, just after bride and groom wed. Robb Stark had promised to marry one of Frey's daughters in exchange for passage across Frey land, The Twins. Frey permitted passage, but Robb fell in love with Talisa and married her, instead. Encouraged by the Lannisters and Boltons, Frey slaughtered King Robb, his new wife and unborn child, and his mother Lady Catelyn.
They did not spare Robb's direwolf Grey Wind, either. Perhaps in due time a Stark will have revenge. Liver and fava beans, anyone?
2. Iron Throne
Answer: Red Keep
In the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, the city of King's Landing, a castle called the Red Keep stands bold. It contains the coveted Iron Throne, the seat of the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, the prize sought and claimed by several central male and female characters in HBO's "Game of Thrones". The Red Keep sits on Aegon's Hill, and is constructed of red stone, perhaps, the legend goes, to remind everyone of the blood and fire Aegon rained down upon his enemies when he took King's Landing.
3. Lord of Light
Answer: Red god
In "The Game of Thrones" TV adaptation, the Lord of Light R'hllor is the red god. He is also called the Heart of Fire, and the God of Flame and Shadow. Most of the R'hllor followers live on the continent of Essos, but there are some to the west in Westeros. A fiery heart is his symbol. His red priests pray at red temples. They wear red robes and some of them tattoo flames upon their faces. They learn to read events and the future in flames, and to interpret and bring about the perceived will of R'hllor through fire and manipulation.
4. City of Bones
Answer: Red Waste
Thousands of miles east of Westeros (where most of the "Game of Thrones" battle for the Iron Throne takes place), is the continent of Essos, and within that lies a vast, harsh and barren region called the Red Waste. Four abandoned cities such as the City of Bones (Vaes Tolorro) are there, but otherwise it is nothing but dry red soil and red clay, with the occasional stagnant water. Yet after the death of her husband Drogo, and the birth of the dragons, Daenerys Targaryen and her faithful enter the Red Waste.
5. Witch
Answer: Red woman
The Red Priestess Melisandre follows the god R'hllor, Lord of Light. She is called the Red Woman because of her appearance and dress. She believes in the prophecy that a leader will emerge (the "Son of Fire") and save humanity from the cold ice of death. "The night is dark and full of terrors, but the fire burns them all away", she often says. Melisandre is portrayed by the stunning Carice van Houten in the "Game of Thrones" TV adaptation.
6. Omen of dragons
Answer: Red Comet
In "Game of Thrones" above the skies of both Essos and Westeros the Red Comet appeared, followed by a long red tail. Also called Red Sword, Red Messenger and Dragon's Tail, various characters talk of it. Perhaps it signals the onset of war, or the bright death star of Khal Drogo of the Dothraki? Maybe it celebrates the rise of the new King Joffrey? What about the wildling woman who says emphatically, "...the comet means one thing, boy. Dragons". Everyone knows dragons disappeared a thousand years ago. Except Daenerys Targaryen, who brings three dragon eggs to life, born of fire, the very next morning.
Then she follows the Red Comet to her destiny.
7. Drogo's horse
Answer: The red
Khal Drogo of the Dothraki, husband to Daenerys Targaryen, rides a magnificent stallion referred to only as "the red". For the Dothraki horse and man are one. The red is sacrificed with a red knife, when Daenerys insists a witch do everything possible to save Drogo's life. The men sworn to follow and protect the Khal are called bloodriders. Daenerys rides the silver.
8. Ghost
Answer: Red eyes
Ghost is a striking white direwolf, an albino with red eyes. He was claimed by Jon Snow, who doesn't fully realize he has a "warg" bond with the direwolf. He can psychically enter and live through it for short periods. Ghost guides and protects Jon Snow, as the other living direwolves protect and guide each Stark who claimed them. Ghost is played by Quigley, an Arctic wolf from Canada, about 9 years old.
Gregor Clegane, "The Mountain", is another "Game of Thrones" character with red eyes. His were bloodshot red, after he was transformed into a brutal monster that serves the Lannisters. Clegane is played by several different actors across the seasons of the show.
9. Prince Oberyn
Answer: Red Viper of Dorne
From Dorne, House Martell, the captivating Prince Oberyn (Pedro Pascal) was brother to Prince Doran Martell and Princess Elia Martell. Oberyn is called the Red Viper of Dorne because he has vast knowledge of poisons and is a deadly foe in combat. The Lannisters however have a mind-blowing contest in mind for him.
10. Giantsbane
Answer: The red bearded Wildling
Among the wildlings who live north of the great wall in "Game of Thrones", the chieftain Tormund Giantsbane, sometimes called Thunderfist, boasts red hair and a wild red beard. He is loyal to Mance Rayder, the King-Beyond-the-Wall, until the White Walkers, and Jon Snow, change everything.
Another redheaded Wildling is Ygritte, an expert archer, lover to her Crow enemy Jon Snow. In 2017 Rose Leslie, who plays Ygritte, became engaged with Kit Harington (Jon Snow).
