Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Viserion becomes this.
Answer: White Walker dragon
Viserion is one of the three dragons born of fire and bonded with Daenerys Targaryen, the "Mother of Dragons". In season 7 of "Game of Thrones" (spoiler alert) Viserion is shot down by a White Walker ice spear, after Daenerys leads him into a battlefield Beyond the Wall, to save Jon Snow and others. Viserion dies and slides into the icy lake, but its body is recovered by the undead wights, and then touched by the magical White Walker Night King.
The dragon becomes a White Walker ice dragon with icy blue eyes and a terrifying ability to spew ice blue fire. What other supernatural and destructive powers he possesses as a White Walker dragon, and how he can be destroyed, is not disclosed in season seven.
2. House Arryn sigil
Answer: White moon and falcon
A white crescent moon and a falcon on a blue background is the sigil of House Arryn, seated in the Eyrie, ancient home of the Mountain Kings within the Mountains of the Moon. The House motto is "As High as Honor". They have a fascinating yet terrible "moon door" in the floor of the castle, through which unfortunates may be flung to their deaths far below. Early in "The Game of Thrones" a raven arrives at Winterfell, announcing to the Stark family the death of Lord Jon Arryn, Hand of the King, Lord Paramount of the Vale, married to Cat Stark's sister Lysa.
This news, and a suggestion by Lysa that there was foul play at work, puts into motion much of the heartrending bloodshed to follow.
3. Valyrian feature
Answer: White hair
Common to the descendants of the ancient Valyrians is beautifully pale skin, and arresting white or white-silver hair. Some of them also have violet or lilac eyes. Daenerys Targaryen inherited the Valyrian ability to survive fire, and to bond with and ride dragons.
She and her brother were the last Targaryens, so far as they knew, "rightful" heirs to the Iron Throne which was taken from their father, "the Mad King". The British actress Emilia Clarke who electrifies the role of Daenerys in "Game of Thrones" was born in 1986, is 5'2" tall, and wore a wig of striking blonde tresses through season seven.
She is a natural brunette.
4. Unsullied, aka Timpa
Answer: White Rat
The Unsullied are exquisitely disciplined eunuch warrior slaves, trained in Astapor, a grand city of Slaver's Bay. White Rat (Marcos James) is the translation of the Valyrian name Timpa Genes, and so this soldier is known as White Rat. The entire army of Unsullied is purchased by Daenerys Targaryen, and then set free after her dragon burns the coarse and cruel city leader alive. White Rat is later tricked and murdered by the Sons of the Harpy.
5. Leads Army of the Dead
Answer: White Walker
The first White Walker was a human man, pierced by dragonglass and turned into a terrifying ice-cold magical being by the Children of the Forest. They intended the White Walker would defend them against attack but instead the Walker created more Walkers, and then an army of dead--reanimated corpses whom the White Walkers master.
The White Walkers were successfully vanquished for centuries, and the Great Wall of ice erected to keep them from reaching the realms of Men. But in HBO's "Game of Thrones" the White Walkers, led by the powerful Night King, waked up, and march their ghoulish army south.
6. Citadel signal of season change
Answer: White raven
When the "Game of Thrones" Citadel maesters observe a change in the seasons of Westeros, these educated men send out white ravens, larger and smarter than the messengers commonly sent. After ten years of summer the white ravens were released to signal autumn in "Game of Thrones" season 2: "Winter is coming".
Then, in season six, Sansa tells Jon Snow a white raven brought news--winter has arrived. When the White Walkers last attacked thousands of years ago, they brought south with them a brutally frigid and dark "Long Night" of winter.
As Lady of Winterfell Sansa orders stocks of food and other preparations, so the people of Winterfell may not freeze or starve. Yet if the White Walkers get past the Great Wall, Winterfell is among the closest targets.
7. A weirwood
Answer: White tree
All over the continent of Westeros the striking tree with white bark but blood-red leaves and sap is found, though the invading Andals cut many of them down long ago. The weirwood trees of the godswoods, called heart trees, have faces carved into their trunks, perhaps put there by the ancient Children of the Forest.
As an ancient family descended from the First Men the Starks of Winterfell still honor the "Old Gods", the spirits of nature, and keep a white weirwood tree central to their castle. Some of the older family members choose to honor "the old Gods and the new".
8. Kingsguard
Answer: White Swords
Three hundred years before the War of the Five Kings, seven of the best fighters and most honorable knights in King's Landing were sworn in as the first Kingsguard, forsaking everything in life except protection of the royal family. They wore gold armor and white cloaks, with white embellishments and a white sigil, earning them the name White Swords. Jaime Lannister acted as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard for a time.
When Cersei Lannister took the Iron Throne, she re-named the White Swords Queensguards, and changed their armor to black, displaying a silver crown sigil. Under the power-hungry Lannisters the guards abandoned their claim to honorable behavior.
9. Ice and snow wilderness
Answer: White Waste
A dangerous and mostly uncharted wilderness of icy winds and blizzards, the White Waste lies far to the North, past the Shivering Sea. Strange shimmering lights are seen by those attempting to find a passage through the White Waste. No passage has been found, and most freeze to death in the attempt. Legend tells of massive Ice Dragons which once flew over the Shivering Sea.
10. Zombies
Answer: Wights
Wights are pronounced "whites", but are not colored white. They are human, animal or even giant corpses, including mere bone and skeletons, reanimated and directed to kill by the power of the magical beings called White Walkers. Wights have startling ice blue eyes like their masters but are understood to be zombies... simply animated dead.
In later "Game of Thrones" seasons they show a very limited but disturbing ability to observe and think on their own, such as realizing the ice of the lake had frozen enough it could now support their weight.
They apparently can be destroyed only by fire, Valyrian steel, and dragonglass. Unless...(spoiler alert from season 7) destroying the White Walker who created them may be a key?
