George and Mildred Trivia Quiz

I was gobsmacked no one did a quiz for one of my favourite shows so I did one myself. 30 years on (on DVD now, of course) and it's still hilarious!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was George and Mildred's surname?

Answer: Roper

Poor George often got called Mr. "Groper" instead of Mr. "G. Roper"!
2. How many children did George and Mildred have?

Answer: 0

Mildred frequently dropped subtle hints to George she'd like to try having a baby. When (more often than not) these didn't work, she tended to make not-so-subtle innuendos about George he probably didn't appreciate (but after 20-odd years probably didn't notice anymore).
3. What was the surname of the family next door?

Answer: Fourmile

Mr. Fourmile was so snooty one must wonder if his surname was a parody of "formal"!
4. What was the name of the neighbours' son(s)?

Answer: Both these names

Little Tarquin was born in season 3. But his older brother Tristram was far more memorable: curious, naughty, funny and repetitious (i.e. if he heard his father say something about George (or vice versa) he would innocently repeat it to the other party and wonder why an explosion would follow).
5. What was the name of George and Mildred's dog?

Answer: Truffles

George bought her as a surprise for Mildred after the local adoption agency had rejected their application. Snuffles was a similar (and male and larger) dog George quickly bought later on when he thought he'd lost Truffles. The dogs' real-life owner must have been a 007 fan because their real names were "Pussy Galore" and "James Bond"!
6. George had a wealthy sister named Ethel who occasionally visited.

Answer: False

She was Mildred's sister. Ethel had married a rich meat tycoon named Humphrey. George did not like Ethel and the feeling was noticeably more than mutual. During a visit, Mildred told George to hand the new dog over to her sister. George did so, remarking "She's a bitch."
Ethel took that the wrong way...
7. What was Jeffrey Fourmile's chief hope throughout the show?

Answer: George would move

Jeffrey Fourmile the neighbour was also the real-estate agent in the pilot episode who showed the Ropers the house. After 10 minutes of George, he decided to put a fake "SOLD" sticker on the sign the next day. The Ropers almost fell for it, but then young Tristram casually mentioned his father had said the house wasn't really sold.
8. Which animal was George sometimes likened to?

Answer: Ferret

Poor Brian Murphy did look rather similar to a ferret in the 1970s. Now he's in HIS 70s (and acting in other things) and the resemblance is less obvious.
9. How many brothers and sisters did George have?

Answer: Four brothers and two sisters

When George's father's house was demolished, he came to stay with his son. He rudely remarked "Seven kids we brought up in that house. Four boys, two girls, and you."
10. The TV show was made into a movie after its last season.

Answer: True

As a matter of fact, the movie was not meant to be the end of the series. But Yootha Joyce (aka Mildred) was rushed to hospital in 1980 shortly after the movie was completed. It turned out for years she had being drinking a bottle of brandy every night. She soon died with Brian Murphy (aka George) by her side.
