Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Gary Sparrow's occupation at the start of the first series?

Answer: Satellite TV dish installer

Early in the first series, Gary loses his job, despite having been "dish installer of the year".
2. What is the name of the 1940's pub Gary Sparrow walks into?

Answer: The Royal Oak

Initially unaware that he has jumped back to 1940's London, Gary thinks the Royal Oak is a "theme pub", and, amusingly, finds several apparent faults.
3. The pub landlord is suspicious of Gary as he should be in the forces, but isn't. The landlord's daughter, however, takes a fancy to Gary. What is her name?

Answer: Phoebe

Phoebe was originally played by Irish actress Dervla Kirwan but was replaced by Elizabeth Carling after the first three series.
4. The Royal Oak employs the local policeman as part time barman. What is his name?

Answer: Reg Deadman

Reg is slightly slow on the uptake (makes you wonder how he became a policeman!) but goodhearted and kindly, and grimly determined not to let the blitz depress him.
5. Gary tells only one person of his ability to travel back to 1940. Who?

Answer: Ron

Ron Wheatcroft is his best friend, and as he is as a printer, is able to supply Gary with all kinds of useful paper items for his trips back to 1940, including paper money and ration cards. He is wistfully jealous of Gary having a romance with someone 60 years in the past.
6. At the end of series two, Gary decides to stop travelling back in time. Why does he resume his trips?

Answer: To invest money in the 1940s, to become rich in the 1990s

Ron persuades him to return, with a scheme to make them both rich; the scheme naturally fails, and, although Gary has avoided the Royal Oak, he accidentally meets Phoebe again and resumes their romance.
7. Gary meets his own son, now older than him.

Answer: True

Phoebe bears him a son, named Michael. He is horrifed to learn that his son, some 20 years his senior, is a pauper, and so travels back to the 1940s to change history. At the end of that episode he again meets Michael, now a successful engineer in New Zealand.
8. Gary frequently pretends, while in wartime London, to have written many modern pop songs. Which song did George Formby want to record?

Answer: "When I'm 64" by the Beatles

George Formby loves the song, although he would want to change "bottle of wine" to "bottle of stout".
9. Learning that the small passageway where his time-slip portal exists is being redeveloped, how does Gary resolve the problem?

Answer: He buys the shop now built over the old passageway

Gary buys the shop where the passageway used to be and is delighted to find that the timeslip is contained within the backyard. He opens the shop, called "Blitz and Pieces" which sells wartime memorabilia - of which, of course, Gary can get unlimited supplies merely by stepping into the yard!
10. At the end of the final episode, Gary is where?

Answer: In the 1940's, with Phoebe

Gary believes that his time portal will close soon, and makes a choice to remain in the 1940s, arguing that Phoebe and baby Michael need him more than successful career woman Yvonne. Yvonne sees him vanish into the portal; he then prevents the assassination of future Prime Minister Clement Atlee.

This act of changing history closes the portal for ever. In a poignant finale, Phoebe asks Gary to promise that his frequent disappearances (explained away as "top secret war work") will end as the war has ended.

The final line of the entire series is Gary confirming "I've nowhere to go".
