Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He once played a priest with a mission, but in 2011 he chose 'SVU' for his television network debut. In the episode 'Mask' (2011) he plays an addiction counselor with a sordid secret. Who is he?

Answer: Jeremy Irons

In 'Mask' (season 12, episode 13) Jeremy Irons, who's won just about every acting award there is, plays Cap Jackson, a man convinced he assaulted his daughter twenty years earlier. He played Cap one more time in 'Totem' seven episodes later that year.

Jeremy chose 'SVU' for his television network debut because he liked the fast pace of the scripting and he loved his character. What he was not prepared for was how quickly they shoot the TV series. He told 'The Daily Actor' that 'you have to watch the actors who've been doing it for 12 years very carefully because they can do it very well, and they know how to do it and learn from that.'

Eric Roberts guest starred on 'SVU' in 'Victims' (2001), while Wallace Shawn and Judd Hirsch were unforgettable playing off each other in 'Alta Kochers' (2018).
2. In the 2009 'SVU' episode 'Ballerina', the aging dancer Birdie Sulloway doesn't make anybody laugh at all. Even the actress who played her described her as 'not a very nice lady'. Who's the actress?

Answer: Carol Burnett

In 'Ballerina' (season 10, episode 16), Carol Burnett plays a woman who is fraying a bit around the edges. It's good that she can always rely on her way too attentive nephew Chet (Matthew Lillard). Burnett told 'E.T.' that, like many guest stars on the show, she admired the professionalism and camaraderie of the cast and the quality of the script. She says she loved not playing for laughs!

Margot Kidder appeared on 'SVU' in 'Pique' (2001), Estelle Parsons in 'Denial' (2002), and Jacqueline Bissett in 'Control' (2003).
3. Assistant District Attorney Jo Marlowe, Stabler's old partner, has a fatal instinct for justice. She frees a man accused of arson and killing his little girls in the 'SVU' episode 'Torch' (2010). Who plays her?

Answer: Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone first appeared as ADA Jo Marlowe in the episode 'Torch' and appeared in the role three more times. The recipient of many awards, including one Golden Globe and three Golden Raspberries, Stone saw 'SVU' as a way of boosting her flagging career. The experience was not a good one. She told 'Business Insider' that the crew made her wear cheap pantyhose, they didn't know how to put on makeup and after working with the Greats, she felt she was at 'the back of the line'. An altogether 'humiliating' experience.

Other memorable ADAs on 'SVU' include Christine Lahti's stellar 6-episode run as ADA Sonya Paxton (2011-12), Diane Neal as ADA Casey Novak (2003-2012) and Judith Light as ADA Elizabeth Donnelly (2002 - 2010).
4. The plot of the 'SVU' episode 'Bedtime' has more twists than a Twizzler and more stars than the Milky Way. One of them, once Elvis's costar, plays a broken-hearted alcoholic and won an Emmy for her outstanding performance. Who was it?

Answer: Ann Margret

The 'SVU' episode 'Bedtime' (2010, season 11) featured Morgan Fairchild, Jaclyn Smith and Susan Anton, and threw in Renée Taylor and William Atherton to boot. Ann played Rita Wills and won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series that year. She was thrilled, as she'd been nominated 6 times previously and this was her first win. In her acceptance speech she described her experience on the set as 'nurturing' and 'protective' and praised Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni in particular as fun to work with.

Three other actresses who won that coveted Emmy for appearances on 'SVU' are Amanda Plummer for her work in the episode 'Weak' (2005), Cynthia Nixon for 'Alternate' (2004) and Ellen Burstyn for 'Swing' (2008).
5. You can call her Gigi, you can call her Lili, but in the 'SVU' episode 'Recall' you can call her Lorraine Delmas. She's a woman who has long been hiding a secret assault that has blighted her life. Who played this role?

Answer: Leslie Caron

In 2006 at the age of 74, Leslie Caron won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress for her role in 'Recall' ('SVU' season 8, episode 3). This was a real comeback for the actress, who had been living offscreen for a few years. The executive producer of 'SVU', Ted Kotcheff, had a vision of her in the role, sent her the script cold and crossed his fingers. She accepted, and the rest was Emmy history. She describes the experience on the show as 'lovely' in an interview with the KTLA Morning Show after winning her award.

Isabelle Huppert appeared on 'SVU' in 'Shattered' (2010), Lena Olin in 'Confidential' (2010) and Serena Williams in 'Brotherhood' (2004)
6. She was a pretty baby then, and now she plays the beautiful grandmother of Olivia's adopted son in a recurring role on 'SVU' beginning in season 19 (2017). She wants into Noah's life. Who plays granny?

Answer: Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields made her debut on 'SVU' in the episode 'Intent' (season 19, episode 8) as Olivia's son Noah's biological grandmother, Sheila Porter. Mariska Hargitay thought Brooke would be perfect in the role and pitched it to her. As she told Seth Meyers, Brooke was initially 'Me? Grandmother?' but then, when she saw the script, she couldn't resist.

Brooke herself describes working on 'SVU' as 'perfect' and 'a well-oiled machine'. She's brilliant in the role and well worth watching!

Chloë Sevigny appeared in in the 'SVU' episode 'Valentine's Day' (2012), Joan Cusack in 'Locum' (2010) and Marlee Matlin in 'Painless' (2004).
7. In the 2006 'SVU' episode 'Uncle' the uncle is homeless, he's psychotic, he's suspected of murder, he's Munch's uncle and there's no telethon to get him out of trouble. Who's the actor?

Answer: Jerry Lewis

8. It was murder, but she didn't write anything. This actress plays a doting mother on the star-studded 'SVU' episode 'Night' (2005). Her son seems to be suffering from OCD and is suspected of assaulting and killing a Muslim woman. Who's the actress?

Answer: Angela Lansbury

'Night' (season 6 episode 20) on 'SVU' and 'Day' on 'Law & Order: Trial by Jury' (season 1 episode 11) were crossover episodes and featured a particularly stellar cast that included Bradley Cooper, Bebe Neuwirth, Rita Moreno and Larry King playing himself. Angela Lansbury gave a riveting performance as a mom in denial and Alfred Molina played her creepy son.

When Richard Belzer told 'SVU' producers that a friend of his was interested in guest starring on the show, they were delighted. Robin Williams was a very special special guest and they decided to feature him in the series' 200th episode (season 9 episode 17). It wasn't a funny role, but Williams got to display his signature vocal pyrotechnics and high energy performance.

Elliot Gould appeared in 'Lessons Learned' (2008) and Harry Connick Jr played Olivia's love interest in 4 episodes in 2012. Robert Vaughn appeared 3 times on 'SVU' and 'December Solstice' (2016) was his final appearance on screen.
10. The 47th vice-president of the United States and appeared on an 'SVU' episode 'Making a Rapist' in 2016. He played himself, talking about an issue close to his heart. Who do you think this is?

Answer: Joe Biden

When Mariska Hargitay started playing Olivia Benson on 'SVU' in 1999 she started getting a lot of fan mail that began with 'I've never told anybody this before...'. As she explained in the documentary 'I am Evidence' (2018). because of this she first became a certified rape crisis counselor and then in 2004 she set up the 'Joyful Heart Foundation' for the support of victims and to deal with issues associated with sexual assault. One of those issues was the backlog and destruction of unprocessed rape kits.

This particular problem was close to the heart of Joe Biden, who had drafted the 'Violence Against Women Act' in 1994. He was glad to appear as himself in 'Making a Rapist' (season 18, episode 2) to talk about processing rape kits. The episode was very well received, although the high level of security on the set startled some of the members of the regular cast.

Judge Jeanine played herself in the judge's chair in the 'SVU' episode 'Catfishing Teacher' (2016) and Al Sharpton appeared as himself in the 1999 episode 'Sophomore Jinx'. Gary Cole portrayed a presidential candidate accused of sexual chicanery in the episode 'Unstoppable' It was scheduled for late October, 2017 but NBC pulled it and it was never shown.
