Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A Very Supernatural Christmas"- It's Christmas time, past and present, for the Winchester men. In the past, Sam wrapped a gift up. Who was that gift intended for originally?

Answer: John Winchester, his dad

The gift was later given to Dean, who was always there for little Sam while dad was off saving the world. Sam had many questions about their mother, which upset young Dean. Ridge Canipe played young Dean and Colin Ford played young Sam.

This episode originally aired December 13, 2007.
2. "A Very Supernatural Christmas"- The story revolves around a demon being drawn into homes by the smell of wreaths. What is the special ingredient used to attract the anti-Santa demon?

Answer: meadowsweet

Bobby was the one who confirmed the meadowsweet ingredient. This is a real plant, whose flowers give off a sweet aroma. The demon would come into the home and remove the male role model/father figure. It would drag the man up the chimney, often breaking him into many pieces. Sam found a tooth left behind at one scene.
3. "A Very Supernatural Christmas"- The demon(s) turn out to be gods masquerading as a suburban couple.

Answer: True

Pretending to be Madge and Edward Carrigan, these Pagan gods of the Winter Solstice traveled around spreading their own holiday cheer. They appeared to be the most charming of neighbors, giving out their special wreaths to each town they visited. The men found out that stakes made of evergreen wood would kill them, but got captured themselves before killing the gods. Sam lost a fingernail, but both were spared losing a tooth before they freed themselves and battled these ancient beings to the death.

Spencer Garrett and Merrilyn Gann played the Carrigans. Merrilyn also played Rose on the series "Everwood".
4. "Malleus Maleficarum"- Our story opened on the scene of Paul and Janet Dutton returning home from a bad party. What happened to Janet when she was alone in her bathroom?

Answer: her teeth fell out

While Janet was brushing her teeth, you could see (via cut scene) that some woman was performing a spell. Janet's teeth became loose and she pulled two out, and then coughed and spat out many more before collapsing to the floor, dead. Paul was unable to get into the bathroom until the spell was over. Sam later found a "hex bag" under her bathroom sink, which led the men to think of witches. When they got back to the car, Dean told Sam that he "hated witches". The witch, Amanda, later cursed Paul to eat maggots. There was a hex bag in the car with him while he ate. Paul had an affair with a woman, and she now wanted revenge.

Robinne Fanfair and Jonathan Watton played the Duttons, and Rebecca Robbins played Amanda.
5. "Malleus Maleficarum"- How did the witch coven refer to their meetings?

Answer: as book club

It was a book club alright. After Amanda's "suicide", the three remaining members gathered and Elizabeth tried to dissuade the others from continuing. She was subtly coerced back into the fold, and the trio knelt down before their "Book of Shadows" and prayed to its master.

Later, when the Winchesters approached Elizabeth, they introduced themselves as detectives Bachman and Turner (as in Bachman Turner Overdrive).

Erin Cahill, Marisa Ramirez, and Kristen Booth played the rest of the witch coven.
6. "Malleus Maleficarum"- Tammi turned out to house the demon. She bragged to Sam about a new "messiah" rising where?

Answer: in the west

Sam went after the coven when Dean began spitting up blood in the motel. He couldn't find the hex bag anywhere, so he burst into Renee's home and found the ladies chanting. The pled against his accusations that they were behind Dean's attack. While he handled that, Ruby burst into the motel and saved Dean.

Sam figured out that Tammi had to be the one possessed by the demon, as she hadn't visibly received any rewards for her allegiance. Tammi, in turn, killed a freaked out Renee and schooled Sam in a few things he wasn't aware of. Sam had believed he was supposed to lead the demon army against mankind, though he had no intention of that ever happening. Tammi was clear that there was a new demon messiah out in the west (California maybe) and that this new demon didn't want Sam as its competition.

When Ruby arrived at Renee's, we found out she used to be human. She was a witch centuries before (about seven centuries) and the Tammi demon had turned her. Ruby tried to kill the Tammi, but was unsuccessful. Elizabeth was able to delay her killing Ruby, but the Tammi killed Elizabeth instead. Sam and Dean were released from their paralysis long enough for Dean to kill the Tammi (send her back to hell) with Ruby's knife. Ruby later revealed to Dean that he would turn into a demon in hell, that there was no way to save him after all, and that she could remember what it was like to be human.
7. "Dream A Little Dream Of Me"- The Winchesters traveled into a dream environment. Who was the first person sucked into a dream state?

Answer: Bobby

Bobby was investigating a professor named Dr. Greggs. The professor was conducting a secret sleep experiment with the aid of his assistant. She confirmed this to Sam and Dean, and also confirmed that she spoken to Bobby. Bobby was in a coma like state at the hospital and Dean was his emergency contact.

The hospital contacted Dean, who was named something else on the contact sheet, and explained that they couldn't figure out why Bobby wouldn't wake up. The professor had basically used black magic (and a plant called Silene capensis, African dream root) to travel inside other peoples' dreams. Bela never took the special potion, though she did deliver the required plant to the men. Ruby didn't appear in the episode.
8. "Dream A Little Dream Of Me"- The professor was murdered by Jeremy, who had taken part in his sleep study. Why had Jeremy wanted to be part of the study, and why hadn't he wanted it to end?

Answer: he hadn't been able to dream since he was a child

Jeremy's father had taken a bat to his head when he was young (9-11 years old), and Jeremy hadn't been able to dream since that time. Sam and Dean traveled into Bobby's dreams in order to wake him up, and they found Jeremy there as well. Dean was able to wake up Bobby, which saved them all from Jeremy the first time. Then, they had to stay awake until they found Jeremy. Dean finally said "bring him on" and fell asleep in the Impala. Sam went back in with Dean, and while he battled Jeremy, Dean battled his future demon self. Dean finally realized, and admitted, that his worst fear was going to hell and becoming a demon. He also admitted he knew he didn't deserve that fate. Sam took care of Jeremy by controlling his dream, and making the bad father appear.
When the men returned to the hotel room, they discovered that Bela had stolen the Colt.

G. Michael Gray played Jeremy.
9. "Mystery Spot"- Dean died over and over again in true "Groundhog Day" form, but who or what was responsible for this?

Answer: The Trickster

The Trickster, played by Richard Speight Jr., vanished professor and writer Dexter Hasselback. When the Winchester men arrived in town to investigate his disappearance, they were made by the Trickster, whom they believed to have killed. Sam had to experience over 100 Tuesdays before they moved on to a Wednesday. It was when Sam realized that a certain diner patron had changed their kind of syrup, that he also realized it was the Trickster at work. Among Dean's known deaths were a shotgun wound, a hit and run by Mr. Pickett, being crushed by falling furniture, choking on a sausage, falling in the shower, tacos that tasted funny, an electrocution, fighting with Sam over an ax, and a dog attack. It was after 100 Tuesdays that Sam had the conversation with Dean like the one Phil had with Rita in "Groundhog Day". The one where Phil gently and quickly convinces Rita that he'd been in Punxsutawney for months or more, and he knew everything about everyone in town.

When Sam finally experienced a Wednesday, Dean was then robbed and shot by Kel. Kel was the apparent homeless man seen in the diner many times.
10. "Mystery Spot"- Each time Sam woke on Tuesday, the radio played "Heat of the Moment" by Asia.

Answer: True

The first Tuesday, and every subsequent Tuesday, Sam would awaken in the motel to hear this song. Dean would already be dressed, and sing along with the radio, but that was not shown each time. After each one of Dean's deaths, Sam would awaken to the same Tuesday.

In "Groundhog Day", Phil would waken each day to hear "I've Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher. After the confrontation with the Trickster, Sam awoke to hear "Back in Time" by Huey Lewis and the News. The same song was heard when Marty McFly awoke in "Back to the Future".

The new song reflected a Wednesday that also saw the death of Dean. Sam then spent months alone, hunting the Trickster and killing other baddies along the way. After being coerced back to the scene of the crime by said Trickster, Sam was finally able to convince the demon to give him back his brother.

The demon told Sam he was messing with him for sure, but he also wanted to teach Sam that nothing good came from the Winchesters' constant sacrifices for each other.
