Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Princeton Plainsboro
Answer: Dr. Gregory House
Hugh Laurie played the brilliant but emotionally flawed diagnostician, Dr. Gregory House on "House, M.D.". He practiced at New Jersey's fictional Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, where he intimidated patients and staff alike. The show aired from 2004 to 2012.
2. St. Eligius
Answer: Dr. Philip Chandler
Boston was the setting for the teaching hospital, St. Eligius, on "St. Elsewhere". The show ran from 1982 to 1988 and featured many up-and-coming actors, including Denzel Washington as Dr. Philip Chandler. Howie Mandel and Mark Harmon were also among the cast.
3. County General
Answer: Nurse Carol Hathaway
On the distaff side, we have Carol Hathaway, nursing at Chicago's County General on "ER". Nurse Hathaway was brilliantly played by Julianna Margulies beginning in 1994. She and her relationship with Dr. Doug Ross (George Clooney) were major plot points early on. Margulies later went on to star on "The Good Wife". FYI, County General was also the name of the hospital on "Ben Casey".
4. Blair General
Answer: Dr. Leonard Gillespie
Blair General, located in a large metropolitan area, was the setting for "Dr. Kildare" way back in 1961. The show featured a young, handsome James Kildare, played by Richard Chamberlain and his relationship with his mentor, Dr. Leonard Gillespie, played by the wonderful actor Raymond Massey.
5. Sacred Heart
Answer: Dr. Elliott Reid
Although Sacred Heart Hospital on "Scrubs" was filmed at North Hollywood Medical Center, the location on the show was never clearly defined. Unlike the other shows in this quiz, "Scrubs" was a comedic look at the lives of three young interns, i.e., J.D. (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliott Reid, played by Sarah Chalke (the second Becky on "Roseanne").
The show ran from 2001 to 2010.
6. Lang Memorial
Answer: Dr. Marcus Welby
Going back to 1969, we have the prototype of the kindly, caring family doctor, i.e., Dr. Welby on "Marcus Welby, M.D.". The wonderful Robert Young, formerly of "Father Knows Best", was associated with Lang Memorial but mostly practiced out of his house in Santa Monica, California or made house calls. He had a handsome young assistant, Dr. Steven Kiley, played by James Brolin.
7. Chicago Hope
Answer: Dr. Kathryn Austin
"Chicago Hope" was both the name of the show and the name of the hospital. Set in Chicago, like "ER' it began airing in 1994. While it didn't have quite the star power of "ER", "Chicago Hope" ran for six seasons. Christine Lahti played the often argumentative Dr. Kathryn Austin with co-stars Adam Arkin as Aaron Shutt and Mandy Patinkin as Jeffrey Geiger.
8. Hope Memorial
Answer: Dr. Althea Davis
I thought it only fair to digress from prime time and include the popular long-running daytime soap opera "The Doctors", a program which ran from 1963 through 1982. Hope Memorial was set in the town of Madison where we met the head of the hospital, Dr. Matt Powers and his staff which included a woman doctor (rare at the time), Dr. Althea Davis, played by Elizabeth Hubbard.
9. Eastman Medical Center
Answer: Dr. Doogie Howser
Before Neil Patrick Harris became a big star, he played sixteen-year-old genius, Douglas 'Doogie' Howser on "Doogie Howser, M.D.". Doogie practiced at Eastman Medical Center in Los Angeles, while still living at home with his parents. Here we are not only treated to a medical show but a teenage coming-of-age drama. Doogie closed each show with a diary-like computer entry.
The show aired from 1989 to 1993.
10. All Saints
Answer: Nurse Jackie Peyton
All Saints Hospital in New York City was the setting for the Showtime cable program "Nurse Jackie". Edie Falco, formerly Carmela Soprano, amazingly portrayed the role of the complex nurse Jackie Peyton who struggled with the pressures of working in a big metropolitan hospital, her personal problems and her drug addiction. "Nurse Jackie" ran from 2009 to 2015.
