Anthony Edwards starred in the role for 10 years. His character was killed off in the 10th season. Edwards also co-starred with Tom Cruise in the 1986 movie "Top Gun", playing the role of Lt. (j.g.) Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw, Cruise's (Lt. Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell) RIO (Radar Intercept Officer). Goose was killed during a flight training accident. Two other "Top Gun" co-stars had roles on "ER". Rick Rossovich, who played Lt. (j.g.) Ron 'Slider" Kerner in "Top Gun" appeared in 11 episodes of "ER" as Dr. John 'Tag' Taglieri, and Michael Ironside, who played Lt. Cmdr. Rick 'Jester' Heatherly in "Top Gun" appeared in 5 episodes of "ER" as Dr. William 'Wild Willie' Swift.

After leaving the Army, the character turned up in the 1979 series titled "Trapper John, MD." On this show, Trapper John was the Chief of Staff at San Francisco Memorial Hospital.

This dramatic medical series ran from 1979 through 1986. This show starred Pernell Roberts in the title role. Roberts is best known as the eldest son of rancher Ben Cartwright on the long running western series "Bonanza."
