Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paul Michael Glaser came to prominence in the television series "Starsky & Hutch" - which one of the following characters was played by Paul?

Answer: Starsky

"Starsky & Hutch" ran for four seasons on the ABC network from 1975. The two protagonists, whilst good friends, are polar opposites both in character and their methods of operation. Starsky, played by Glaser, is a former US Army officer who covers his intensity with wise cracks. He is hyperactive, street-wise, prone to be moody, and runs around in his pride and joy - a fire-red Ford Gran Torino. The car is lovingly called the "Striped Tomato". His partner, Hutch played by David Soul, is the thinker of the two. He's the one who uses science, connects the clues, attracts the ladies and is a lot more reserved than Starsky. Oh, nearly forgot, Hutch's car is a beat up 1973 Ford Galaxie 500 sedan. Huggy Bear (Antonio Fargas) is their flashy, jive-talking street informant and (Capt.) Dobey (Bernie Hamilton) is their boss.

2. Rust Cohle is a homicide detective on HBO's "True Detective" season one, premiering in 2014. In the show, Cohle keeps meticulous case notes in his ledger. Which of the following nicknames has this habit earned him?

Answer: The Taxman

Rustin Spencer "Rust" Cohle was nicknamed "The Taxman" by his colleagues. He is a talented detective but troubled by his past. As the series progresses, Cohle is revealed to have been addicted to drugs while on an undercover mission as a narcotics detective. He later opts to be transferred to a homicide division and works with his partner, Martin "Marty" Hart, for seventeen years to capture a serial killer.

Rust Cohle was portrayed by American actor Matthew David McConaughey. McConaughey has received several nominations and awards for his role as Cohle. The revival of McConaughey's career, thanks to this role and other excellent works around the same time, has been dubbed "The McConaissance".

3. In 2010, CBS launched a remake of "Hawaii Five-O" with Alex O'Loughlin playing the new Steve McGarrett. Who played the original McGarrett for 12 seasons?

Answer: Jack Lord

Jack Lord played Steve McGarrett from 1968 through 1980 in a total of 279 episodes. In both the original and the remake, McGarrett is an ex-US naval officer who heads an elite crime fighting team that answers only to the governor. The unit is based on an actual unit that operated in Hawaii under martial law during the 1940s. The original series uses the letter O even though it is five zero whereas the remake always uses a zero.

The immortal line McGarrett used frequently "Book'em Danno" has become part of pop culture and is relevant even today (2016). McGarrett still uses the phrase in the remake much to the dismay of his partner Danny Williams (played by Scott Caan). The use of Five-O to refer to any police is also still used throughout the US (as of 2016).

James MacArthur played Danny Williams in the original. Karl Malden starred in "The Streets of San Francisco" alongside Michael Douglas. Daniel J. Travanti starred in "Hill Street Blues".

4. Which blood spatter expert, played by Michael C. Hall, has an interesting sideline involving cling film and large knives?

Answer: Dexter Morgan

Michael C. Hall plays Dexter Morgan, a Miami police blood spatter expert. In his spare time he helps to reduce Miami's criminal element as a serial killer, immobilising them with cling film and generally using a knife to kill them.

As a child he witnessed his mother brutally murdered and was fostered by a detective, who channeled Dexter's trauma induced urges, which he termed 'the dark passenger', in a 'positive' direction by killing murderers who could not be convicted.

His on screen sister Debra, was played by his (at one time wife), Jennifer Carpenter.

5. "Miami Vice" had an enormous influence on popular culture in the eighties. What clothing did Sonny Crockett (played by Don Johnson) typically wear as a detective in Miami-Dade County?

Answer: Pastel linen jacket over T-shirt, Boat Shoes, no socks, Ray-Bans

The influence "Miami Vice" had on popular culture cannot be underestimated. As well as distinctive cars, guns, and boats, the two leads, Crockett and Tubbs had distinguishing clothing that impacted on men's contemporary fashion around the world. Sonny Crockett wore a pastel jacket usually Italian, over a T-shirt with linen pants and boat or deck shoes without socks. Arguably it was Johnson's character that introduced designer stubble to the world. Production values went as far as repainting parts of South Beach, Miami Beach to make the "place feel" right, and designer cars like Ferraris. In the early series these were Ferrari copy kits bolted onto a Camaro Chassis until Ferrari threatened to sue, Crockett got a genuine Ferrari Testarossa in 1986 (Ferrari actually donated two identical cars).

6. On the television series "Twin Peaks", FBI agent Dale Cooper often speaks to a person named Diane. How does he speak to Diane?

Answer: Through a cassette recorder

Diane is an unidentified person with whom Dale Cooper recounts his daily observations and thoughts on whichever case he is working. Cooper does this by recording tapes using a microcassette recorder. This unusual habit is among several quirks displayed by the character.

Special Agent Dale Bartholomew Cooper is portrayed by American actor Kyle MacLachlan. This role has earned MacLachlan two Emmy nominations as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama.

7. The British TV drama series "Agatha Christie's Poirot" (1989) featured which of the following actors in the titular role?

Answer: David Suchet

After seeing him perform as Blott in "Blott on the Landscape" (1985) it was the Christie family that recommended Suchet to the producers as the ideal person to portray Poirot in the series. Suchet would play the eponymous detective in all thirteen seasons of the series, whose stories were taken from seven novels and fourteen short stories written by Christie that involved the Belgian sleuth. Many critics have heaped praise on Suchet for his performances indicating that his were the most accurate depictions of Agatha's wonderful creation. Aired on ITV the series was hailed as masterful and it earned itself numerous awards and nominations. Among those are British Academy of Television Awards, an Edgar, and a Primetime Emmy nomination.

8. Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) was a brilliant detective but a very tortured man. He dealt daily with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder but his true demon was tremendous guilt over the bombing death of his devoted wife, a bomb he thought was meant for him. The underlying story of the series 'Monk' was always, who killed her and why. What was her name?

Answer: Trudy

Trudy was Monk's ill-fated wife. She was often portrayed (Stellina Rusich in the first two seasons and Meloara Hardin for the rest of the series) as a woman who adored and understood Adrian in a way few others ever did. She would appear to him at times he was so distressed he could barely function and as she did while alive, would always encourage him to see things through. During the series, Monk discovers she really was the intended victim but still did not know why. The concluding two episodes brought her story to a conclusion and that she had also left behind a very real connection for Adrian to always keep her close to his heart.

Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard) was Monk's second assistant replacing Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram) in the third season. Julie (Emmy Clarke) was Natalie's daughter. Karen (Glenne Headly) was Captain Leland Stottlemeyer's (Ted Levine) wife of over twenty years, divorcing him during the fourth season. Captain Stottlemeyer was a strong advocate for using Monk on difficult police cases, but had a difficult time putting up with Monk's idiosyncrasies. When Monk fell apart after Trudy's death, he was responsible for hiring Sharona to help Monk deal with his day to day life.

"Monk" was on the air for eight seasons on the USA network and was the most successful cable drama during its run from 2002-2009 winning eight Emmy Awards.

9. "NYPD Blue" (1995-2005) centred on the fictional 15th Precinct in New York City. The show revolved around two leads: Detective Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) and another more handsome co-star. Franz lasted the entire series as Sipowicz but which one of the following did *NOT* play his co-star as his detective partner?

Answer: Mark Wahlberg

When "NYPD Blue" was at its peak in 1999, "TV Guide" rated Sipowicz as 23rd in the list of 50 "Greatest TV Characters of All Time". When we meet Sipowicz in the early episodes of the first series, we see a racist homophobic misogynist detective. Over the course of the series Sipowicz's arc traverses such plot devices as getting shot, insulting the beautiful DA, winning her over, marrying her, having a son, have his first son (by a previous marriage) die as an on-duty cop, seeing his wife die, survive cancer, marry again, gain a daughter and, despite his disdain for authority, end up leading his squad.

"NYPD Blue" was a much lauded, much decorated, gritty realistic police procedural that was one of the finest shows of its time.

10. "NCIS" follows the cases of an elite naval law enforcement team led by Jethro Gibbs. What branch of the military had Gibbs served in prior to joining NCIS?

Answer: Marines

Gibbs served in the Marine Corps from 1976 to 1991, most notably as a Marine Corps Scout Sniper, rising to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant before retiring. He saw action in Operation Just Cause and Operation Desert Storm as well as classified or black-op assignments. After retiring he joined the Naval Investigative Service, the forerunner of NCIS. His character was introduced in two episodes of "JAG", which served as a backdoor pilot for the series. Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), Abby (Pauley Perrette), and Ducky (David McCallum) were also introduced in these episodes.
