Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which tough-as-nails police officer helped Helen Mirren earn her first Primetime Emmy Award?

Answer: DCI Jane Tennison

Detective Chief Inspector Tennison is a character created by Lynda La Plante in the television series "Prime Suspect" that first aired in the United Kingdom in 1991. Tennison works in a male dominated environment and despite her brilliance is often overlooked for the major crimes purely on the virtue of her sex. In fact sexism is one of the major sub-plots in the first series and is employed in such a manner that it is shown to hinder Tennison in her investigations. Mirren is brilliant in her role as the no-nonsense Inspector and the role won her the first of a number of Primetime Emmy Awards.

2. On "Castle", Richard Castle is a best-selling crime novelist who uses NYPD detective Kate Beckett as the muse for the heroine of his new book series. What is the name of the character Beckett inspires, and is in fact the lead in several "New York Times" best sellers?

Answer: Nikki Heat

"Castle" premiered on ABC in March 2009. Richard Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, uses NYPD detective Kate Beckett, played by Stana Katic, as the muse for his new heroine, Nikki Heat. Castle used his connections with the mayor to be allowed to follow Beckett around. At first she did not like him but soon found his point of view useful in solving murders. As time passed they fell in love and married.

With the early success of the show, it was decided to publish actual Nikki Heat books with the fictional Richard Castle as the author. Nathan Fillion's photo was even used as Richard Castle's and Nathan has attended book signings as Castle. From the beginning, these ghost written books have been "New York Times" best sellers. The books include "Heat Wave" which reached number six on the list in 2009, "Naked Heat" debuted at number seven in 2010, "Heat Rises" debuted at number one in 2011, "Frozen Heat" debuted at number seven in 2012, and "Deadly Heat" debuted at number eight in 2013.

3. Forensic investigator Temperance Brennan shares a nickname with which "Star Trek" character?

Answer: Bones

Dr. Temperance Brennan works as a forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian Institute Medico-Legal Lab where she examines human remains where the flesh is very degraded. Because of this work she is given the nickname 'Bones'. This is also the name of the television series which commenced in 2005 starring Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan. The character was created by Kathy Reichs in a series of sixty-five murder-mystery novels.
Leonard "Bones" McCoy was the doctor in the original series (and some later episodes) of Star Trek, played by DeForest Kelley. Number One was a nickname for the First Officer, used most notably by Captain Picard frequently when addressing William Riker.
Scotty, of course, refers to Montgomery Scott, portrayed most famously by James Doohan.
In the television series Star Trek: Enterprise, we met 'Trip', a character named Charles Tucker III. His nickname 'Triple' (shortened to Trip) derived from the fact that he is the third of his family to be named Charles Tucker. He was portrayed by Connor Trinneer.

4. Cybill Shepherd played the main character in the TV comedy-drama series "Moonlighting"(1986-9). The show was also notable for being the breakout role of the male lead who went on to become a movie star soon after. Who was the male lead actor in "Moonlighting"?

Answer: Bruce Willis

Cybill Shepherd returned to international prominence in 1985, after almost a ten year absence. She received good reviews for her performances in "The Last Picture Show" (1971), "The Heartbreak Kid" (1972), and "Taxi Driver" (1976). In 1983 she returned to Los Angeles where she played in the critically acclaimed TV series "The Yellow Rose" (1983) but it only lasted one season.

In 1985 she was cast as Maddie Hayes as the owner of Blue Moon Investigations, a detective agency. David Hayes (Willis' character), became her working partner. One of the attractions of the show was the sexual tension between the two leads. The show was quite innovative with sharp, fast paced dialogue in the image of a screwball comedy, witty repartee, and frequent breaking of he fourth wall (talking to the audience). The show was a critical and ratings success but after Maddie and David consummated their relationship in season three, ratings declined and the show was cancelled after the fourth season.
Ms Sheperd has played opposite all the actors listed as options in this question.

5. This television lady wrote best selling mysteries, baked great pies, didn't drive and was a bit of a celebrity in her hometown of Cabot Cove, Maine. And no matter where she went, people she met were murdered. While her keen sense of observation solved these crimes, maybe attending her book signings wasn't the best way to spend an afternoon.

Answer: J.B. Fletcher

J B. Fletcher was best known to her friends as Jessica and the central character of "Murder, She Wrote" (1984-1996). The research that went into her mystery stories supposedly not only sharpened her observational skills, but also familiarised her to obscure methods of committing murders, often poisons. Putting these abilities to the test meant that she was constantly surrounded by dead people and as a result, Cabot Cove had one of the highest per capita murder records in the country. She gave those folks a break now and then however, when she taught criminology in Manhattan and visited friends and family around the globe.

If Jessica were a real person, her book sales might have rivaled J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. Over forty titles were mentioned during the run of the series including the first novel she published "The Corpse Danced at Midnight". Jessica herself might have been modeled after Agatha Christie who also had a knowledge of poisons and whose detective characters were very observant. Jennifer Hart was the lead female character on the series, "Hart to Hart".

6. Which of the following television series featured a forensic scientist named Abby Sciuto?

Answer: NCIS

Abigail "Abby" Sciuto was part of a team of special agents on the CBS police television series "NCIS" (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) which commenced in 2003. The team investigated crimes that involve the Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy. The character had qualifications in sociology, criminology and psychology, and was highly capable at her job. Abby Sciuto had a Gothic sense of fashion, a fondness for coffee and enjoyed congenial relationships with her co-workers.

Abby Sciuto was played by American actress Pauley Perrette. Thanks to this role, Perrette was rated by Q Score (a measure of familiarity and appeal) as the most popular actress on U.S. primetime television in 2011. Besides being an actress, Perrette was also an author, a singer, and a civil rights advocate.

7. "Cold Case" (2003-10) was a police procedural TV series concentrating on such cases. The main character had a breakout role playing opposite Tom Cruise in the "Minority Report" in 2002. Who played the main character Lilly Rush in this series?

Answer: Kathryn Morris

Cold Cases are investigations which were not being actively pursued by the police department. Kathryn Morris as Lilly Rush was the senior detective who pursued such cases, leading a small team. The show was unusual in that it employed double casting where two sets of actors were employed: one set for the present day; and a set of younger actors for when the crime was committed in the past. The show was set in Philadelphia, unusual for a police TV show.

Kathryn Morris first came to prominence playing Lt. Annalisa "Stinger" Lindstrom in the TV series "Pensacola: Wings of Gold" (1997-9). She had small parts in movies particularly those directed by Rod Lurie before her big break playing Tom Cruise's wife in the "Minority Report" in 2002 . After "Cold Case" concluded in 2010, she returned to small movie roles. In 2013, she and her partner, Johnny Messner, became parents to Jameson and Rocco.

8. Angie Harmon, who played Detective Jane Rizzoli on "Rizzoli & Isles", got her big break playing A.D.A. Abbie Carmichael on which long running NBC police procedural?

Answer: Law & Order

Angie Harmon played Abbie on "Law & Order" from 1998 to 2001. Jack McCoy, played by Sam Waterston, was her boss in the New York County DA's office. Abbie's conservative values butted heads with McCoy's more liberal leanings on more than one occasion.

In 2010, Angie took on the role of Jane Rizzoli, a tough as nails Boston homicide cop whose best friend is the medical examiner Maura Isles, played by Sasha Alexander. Rizzoli was a street-tough cop who seemed the exact opposite of Isles' white collar doctor but the two formed a formidable partnership and friendship that allowed them to solve homicides for the Boston Police Department.

9. First appearing in print in the 1930s, which young lady sleuth has appeared in more than 175 books, five films, and two television shows?

Answer: Nancy Drew

Nancy Drew was a mature teenage heroine, seen as a role model for young girls. The author, Carolyn Keen, was a pseudonym for many different authors. She has altered in character over the years, reflecting changes in American culture and morality. Nancy was depicted as being gifted and talented, spoke French, played Bridge and played the piano. She was exceptional at dance, cooking, driving and car repairs. She also rode horses like a cowboy.

In 1977-79, the Nancy Drew TV series produced was called "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries" where Nancy Drew was played by Pamela Sue Martin in season one and Janet Louise Johnson in season two. (There was no Nancy Drew involvement in the third and final season). In 1995 Tracy Ryan played Nancy Drew in a single season TV show called "Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys".

10. John Steed, the protagonist of the television series "The Avengers", was fortunate to have a string of famous assistants including Emma Peel. Who played the role of Mrs Peel?

Answer: Diana Rigg

Emma Peel was more of a spy than a detective, but she was still required to employ her powers of deduction and chase down bad guys, so she gets an honourable mention here. She was introduced as John Steed's partner in the 1960s television series "The Avengers" and appeared in seasons four through to six. Peel was a martial arts expert, proved to be very handy with a sword and was considered to be a chemistry genius. Peel was played by the very beautiful Diana Rigg and she was written into the series as a replacement for Cathy Gale (played by Honor Blackman) when Blackman was called away to play the role of Pussy Galore in the James Bond film "Goldfinger" (1964). Ironically Rigg would later play the Countess Teresa (Tracy) Draco di Vicenzo in the 1969 Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".
