Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Every Tuesday morning we see that Frank has a meeting with two influential politicians. What titles do these individuals hold?

Answer: Speaker of the House and House Majority Leader

Frank typically finds these meetings unproductive and the meeting is usually just the other men talking and him listening. While at the dinner they are interrupted by Remy Danton, a former colleague of Frank.
2. After Frank's Tuesday meeting he has a discussion with Remy. What type of contracts does Remy say SanCorp will lose out on since Frank was not nominated as Secretary of State?

Answer: Natural gas

Remy is a partner at the law firm Glendon Hill and he represents the natural gas company SanCorp. Frank makes a comment that Remy was the best press secretary he ever had. However, he also mentions that Remy chose money over power. Frank had promised Remy that if promoted to Secretary of State SanCorp would receive offshore drilling contracts.
3. After the firestorm from the leaking of the education bill draft Don Blythe decides that it would be best for the party if he removed his name from the bill. Knowing that Don would step down, which of the following comments does Frank make about martyrs?

Answer: "What a martyr craves more than anything is a sword to fall on."

Of course Frank is the reason why the education bill draft was released to the public in the first place and his feigning of taking the blame for the backlash prompted Don to take the fall. After Don relinquishes control of the writing of the bill, he asks that Frank author the bill.
4. Part of Frank's power maneuvering involves ousting the Secretary of State nominee Michael Kern. What story does Frank leak to Zoe that contributes to Kern's downward spiral?

Answer: Kern edited a story that called Israel's presence in the Gaza Strip and West Bank an occupation.

When Frank gives Zoe the information in a dark area at nighttime, Zoe makes the comment, "How very deep throat of you." Kern was editor of the Williams College newspaper in 1978 when an article was published that lambasted Israel's policies in the Middle East.

When confronted about the story during an interview with George Stephanopoulos, Kern denies having written it but then laughs and says that people change their minds over time.
5. Paying homage to the Reagan years, what new political term does Kern use during his interview that is first mentioned by Frank?

Answer: Trickle-down Diplomacy

While Kern doesn't elaborate on what trickle-down diplomacy would entail, he states that through it numerous dilemmas will be resolved between Israel and Palestine. When Frank hears Kern use the term on air he comments that Chief of Staff Vasquez must have given the line to him to use for the interview.
6. After Frank visits his team of six interns that are writing the bill on education, he asks them if they need anything else other than what?

Answer: Deodorant

One of the interns comments that they haven't showered for half a week while working on the bill. Frank asks one of his assistants to get the interns some Febreeze and to have the room steam cleaned over the weekend.
7. Of the 19 people that were laid off at Claire's company, Clean Water Initiative, how many of them does Claire inform of the decision personally?

Answer: 1

Claire asks Evelyn to have the conversations with 18 people that were being laid off. Little does Evelyn know that she will be the next person to be let go. Claire tells Evelyn that she just can't have any doubts about the direction of the company.
8. Who does Frank tell Zoe to report will be the new nominee for Secretary of State after Kern will be forced to step down?

Answer: Catherine Durant

In the series premiere, Frank asks Catherine if she would like to be Secretary of State and she responds affirmatively. When her name is mentioned in the news media there is a positive reception which could influence the selection for the nominee. Vasquez asks Frank what his opinion is of Catherine and he essentially says that she'd be a good choice.
9. When Frank is leaving his office for the night, security stops him and tells him that a man tried to get into the building. What did the man do when security told him he couldn't enter?

Answer: He started tearing his clothes off.

The security officers handcuffed the man to a pole but he was still causing a scene by screaming. Instead of avoid him, Frank has these positive words of advice: "Nobody can hear you. Nobody cares about you. Nothing will come of this."
10. At the end of the episode what do we see Frank using that brings a smile to Claire's face, since she bought it for him and he hadn't been using it?

Answer: Rowing exercise machine

Claire is happy that he's using the exercise machine because she doesn't want to outlive him by 20 years and she knows about his propensities to eat and drink. When Frank first sees the machine he states that it looks positively medieval and that his only sanctuary is being turned into a fitness dungeon.
