Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The series begins with a loud noise that wakes up the main character, Frank Underwood. What was this sound?

Answer: A dog being hit by a car.

In the beginning all that we really hear is a car slamming its breaks and hitting something. After Frank goes outside we can hear the dog in obvious pain and the driver fleeing the scene. Realizing that the dog was not going to survive Frank does what he believes is necessary.
2. The next scene shows a New Year's celebration where we are informed that Frank has been in Congress for 22 years. What position does he hold, a position that has been held in real life by Jim Clyburn, Steve Scalise, and Tom Delay?

Answer: Majority Party Whip

The primary function of a majority whip is to try and rally support for proposed legislation in the hope that when the bill is called for a vote it will pass. Obviously Frank has bigger dreams than remaining the Majority Whip.
3. The opening credits show scenes of Washington D.C. and indicate that the "House of Cards" series is based on a novel. What author created a trilogy of political thrillers including "House of Cards," "To Play the King," and "The Final Cut?"

Answer: Michael Dobbs

The three novels were each adapted into a miniseries on BBC. Interestingly Netflix producers decided to change the last name of the main character from Urquhart to Underwood.
4. It seems that behind most powerful men is an equally powerful woman providing support. What actress, famous for characters such as Buttercup and Jenny Curran, plays the part of Claire Underwood?

Answer: Robin Wright

Robin Wright was famously married to Sean Penn from 1996 to 2010. Both Robin Wright and Kevin Spacey Emmy nominations in 2013 for lead roles for their great work on "House of Cards."
5. President-elect Walker had promised Frank Underwood a position due to his long service and party loyalty. What position was Frank expecting to be nominated for that would have made him the United States' chief officer for foreign affairs?

Answer: Secretary of State

President-elect Walker ends up deciding not to nominate Underwood in spite of having previously promised him the position. Instead he informs Underwood (through an intermediary) that he prefers for him to stay in the House of Representatives. Obviously Underwood feels slighted by this and seeks to gain influence by any means necessary.
6. As a means at getting back at his party for slighting him, Underwood partners with columnist Zoe Barnes to release certain information. On what political issue did Zoe first disseminate information with the help of Underwood?

Answer: Education

President-elect Walker sought Underwood's help in getting an education bill passed passed shortly after his inauguration. However, he didn't want Underwood's name on the bill and instead tasked Congressman Don Blythe with writing it. Realizing that the draft would never pass if it came up for a vote Underwood puts the draft in his paper shredder and tells Blythe that it needs a lot of reworking. Underwood gives the partially torn draft to Zoe who runs a story on it with the headline "Education Bill Far Left of Center."
7. Frank Underwood is a man with some interesting habits. Of the following, which do we not see him do in the first episode of "House of Cards?"

Answer: Care for his collection of bonsai trees.

From the first episode it seems that Underwood thoroughly enjoys eating and drinking heavily and hints that it may be a byproduct of his growing up in South Carolina. It's interesting that rather than utilizing narration, "House of Cards" has Frank's character talk directly to the audience to give information and commentary.
8. Underwood learns that a fellow party Congressman named Peter Russo had been arrested for drunk driving. After Underwood is able to cover up the incident he makes which of the following requests from Russo?

Answer: His unquestioning loyalty

Russo is released from prison after Underwood's Cheif of Staff, Doug Stamper, bribes the D.C. police commissioner for Russo's release in exchange for Underwood's support for his campaign for mayor. In addition to the DUI, Russo had also been arrested for solicitation and possession of controlled substances.
9. The first episode of "House of Cards" had several memorable and poignant lines from Underwood. How does Underwood feel that power is a lot like real estate?

Answer: It's about location, location, location.

Underwood further explains that you want to be the source of high property value and. Another one of my favorite lines from the first episode was when Underwood states that he loves his wife more than sharks love blood.
10. One of the final scenes shows the inauguration of Garrett Walker as President of the United States. What number president does it indicate Walker has become? Interestingly, someone will likely become this number president in 2016 provided that Barack Obama completes his second term in office

Answer: 45th

While Garrett Walker becomes the 45th president in this episode, it seems that Underwood has ambitions to someday fill the same office. In his inaugural address Walker makes a promise to enact education reform within 100 days of his taking office.
