Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "ST: TNG" - Commander William Riker is given the powers of a Q

Answer: Hide and Q

"Hide and Q" premiered as part of the first season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" on November 23, 1987. In this episode, Q gives Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) the powers of a Q (pretty much the power to do anything he wants at the snap of his fingers).

It was done as a challenge by Q to see if Commander Riker could resist the temptation of using his Q powers to benefit himself and/or his crew mates. Q places several scenarios in front of Riker to test his resolve. Towards the end of the episode Riker attempts to use his powers to give his colleagues the things they coveted most, such as restoring Geordi LaForge's (LeVar Burton) eyesight.

However, these gifts were all rejected by the crew since they were not genuine.
2. "ST: TNG" - Q introduces the U.S.S. Enterprise to the Borg

Answer: Q Who

The episode "Q Who" premiered on May 8, 1989 as part of the second season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". In the episode, Q sends the U.S.S. Enterprise to a planet on the opposite side of the galaxy. The planet had been taken over by the Borg, a species of humanoid cyborgs intent on assimilating the entire galaxy into their collective mind.

This episode heavily features Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg), the Enterprise's bartender, who had previous run-ins with both Q and the Borg. The Enterprise eventually encounters a Borg cube for the first time, but the crew discovers that they are no match for it. Q returns the Enterprise to its original position after Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) finally pleads for his help.

The Borg would become a major antagonistic faction in "Star Trek" for the rest of this series and subsequent ones.
3. "ST: TNG" - Q gets temporarily stripped of his powers

Answer: Deja Q

"Deja Q" appeared in the third season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". The episode first premiered on February 5, 1990. Due to his previous antics, Q is exiled and stripped of his powers by the leaders of the Q Continuum. He is then forced to endure life as a mortal human aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, which causes him to learn more about human biology, including the need to eat and the sensation of pain. Q eventually uses his knowledge to assist the engineering team prevent a moon from crashing into its parent planet. Meanwhile, an alien species who had previously encountered Q uses this opportunity to try and get revenge on him, which endangers the crew of the Enterprise.

At the end, Q abandons the Enterprise to prevent its destruction, which the Q Continuum views as an act of self sacrifice.

As a result, Q's powers are restored and he is allowed to return to the Q Continuum. He grants the android Data (Brent Spiner) the gift of laughter for a few moments, since Data served as a mentor to Q during his time as a human.
4. "ST: TNG" - Q turns the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise into "Merry Men"

Answer: Qpid

"Qpid" premiered on April 22, 1991 as part of the fourth season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". In this episode, Captain Picard is visited by a woman named Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), whom he had met in the episode "Captain's Holiday". Vash and Picard had developed a romantic relationship, but Vash became disheartened when she discovered that Picard kept their relationship a secret. Q takes this opportunity to play a game with Captain Picard. Q kidnaps Vash and places her into the role of Maid Marian. Captain Picard and the rest of the main characters are placed into the roles of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Q's intention was to get Captain Picard to prove his love for Vash by having him rescue her before she was executed. Q assumed the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham.
5. "ST: TNG" - a young intern develops Q powers during her visit to the U.S.S. Enterprise

Answer: True Q

The episode entitled "True Q" debuted on November 1, 1992 in the sixth season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". In "True Q", a young Starfleet intern named Olivia (Amanda Rogers) visits the U.S.S. Enterprise to seek medical training from Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden).

While on the Enterprise, Olivia begins to develop supernatural abilities. Q soon arrives and informs her that she is not human, but in fact a member of the Q race. Her parents had left the Q Continuum and decided to make themselves mortal and live on Earth. Q tutors Olivia on how to use her newly discovered powers.

He also warns her that being a Q was a serious commitment. She could not live her life as a mortal and have Q powers at the same time. Olivia's parents were executed by the Q Continuum for continuing to use their powers as mortals. Olivia eventually decides to return with Q to the Q Continuum.
6. "ST: TNG" - Q shows a dying Captain Picard an alternate reality

Answer: Tapestry

"Tapestry" is another episode from the sixth season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". It first premiered on February 15, 1993. The episode opened with Captain Picard on the verge of death after getting injured on an away mission. While doctors rushed to save his life he had a vision of God, which actually turned out to be Q. Captain Picard had an artificial heart, which he received after getting stabbed by an alien during a fight at Starfleet Academy, a fight which he and his colleagues instigated.

The artificial heart had been damaged by a weapon what would have been less effective against a real heart. Q offered Captain Picard the opportunity to relive this period of time and change history by preventing the fight, which would also prevent his impending death.

However by preventing the fight, Picard would not receive the life lessons he would need to become captain and he found himself becoming just a low level lieutenant instead. Unhappy with this new life, Picard requested that Q allow him to relive the fight once again and restore his original timeline, even if he was to die. Picard woke up alive at the end of the episode unsure if it was Q that actually spared him or if it was just a dream.
7. "ST: DS9" - Q follows a former female partner onto Deep Space Nine

Answer: Q-Less

"Q-Less" was the only episode of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" to feature Q. It premiered in the show's first season on February 7, 1993. Vash, who was seen in "Qpid", had teamed up with Q at the end of the episode. She sought to take advantage of his powers to enhance her career as an archaeologist. With Q being an omnipotent scoundrel and Vash being an opportunistic profiteer, this partnership did not last long and Vash went to seek refuge from Q at Deep Space Nine. Q ended up following Vash to Deep Space Nine and drives the crew crazy with his antics. Q challenges Commander Sisko (Avery Brooks) to a bare knuckle boxing match, which Sisko promptly wins. Meanwhile, Vash attempts to sell artifacts she obtained in the Gamma Quadrant at an auction ran by the Ferengi bartender, Quark (Armin Shimerman).

The auction is cut short when the crew finds out that one of her artifacts was endangering the station.
8. "ST: VOY" - Q seeks to prevent another Q from committing suicide

Answer: Death Wish

"Death Wish" premiered during the second season of "Star Trek: Voyager" on February 19, 1996. This would be the third "Star Trek" series to feature the character Q. While in the Delta Quadrant, the U.S.S. Voyager encounters an asteroid where they discover a member of the Q race who had been exiled.

This Q (Gerrit Graham), who was given the name Quinn, requests asylum on Voyager to prevent the Q from exiling him again. Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is forced to become mediator between Quinn (who wishes to become mortal and die) and Q (who seeks to prevent it). Q feels that allowing Quinn to die will lead to disorder within the Q Continuum. Quinn argues that he is tired of life as an omnipotent immortal being and that he has nothing left to live for, except to experience death.

At the end, Q is finally convinced to use his powers to make Quinn mortal. Q later kills Quinn by poisoning him with an alien version of hemlock.
9. "ST: VOY" - Q wishes to establish an intimate relationship with Captain Janeway

Answer: The Q and the Grey

The episode "The Q and the Grey" premiered on November 27, 1996 as part of the third season of "Star Trek: Voyager". The events of the episode "Death Wish" ended up sparking a civil war within the Q Continuum. Q approaches Captain Janeway and expresses his desire to have her bear his child, which he believes will help save the Q Continuum and bring an end to the war.

After rejecting Q's offer, Q then brings Captain Janeway into the Q Continuum so that she can witness the severity of the war first hand.

The Q Civil War is visualized by Q as resembling the American Civil War, however explosions in the Q Continuum translate into supernovas in the mortal world. Meanwhile, Q's ex-wife (Suzie Plakson) arrives on Voyager and reluctantly helps the crew to reach the Q Continuum where they can try and rescue Captain Janeway.

In the end, Q and his ex-wife reunite and he impregnates her by just touching fingers. Q later asks Captain Janeway to become godmother to his son, which she accepts.
10. "ST: VOY" - Captain Janeway is asked to teach Q's teenage son a lesson

Answer: Q2

"Q2" debuted on on April 11, 2001 as part of the seventh season of "Star Trek: Voyager". In this episode, Q brings his rebellious teenage son (who was played by John de Lancie's son Keegan) to Voyager to receive life lessons from his godmother "Aunt Kathy" Janeway. Q's son turns out to be even more obnoxious than his father.

The Q Continuum had warned Q that his son would be exiled unless his behavior improved. After Q's son fails to change his behavior the first time around, Q is forced to strip him of his powers.

Despite still being obnoxious, Q's son develops a friendship with Icheb (Manu Intiraymi), a teenage boy who had been freed from the Borg collective. He and Icheb take the Delta Flyer for a joyride. They soon encounter some aliens who attack the ship with a weapon that nearly kills Icheb.

The attack turned out to be a ruse set up by Q in order to test his son. The young Q finally learned his lesson after he realizing he placed his friend in danger. Q's son is finally allowed to return to the Q Continuum, though his father still had to pull some strings for him to be allowed back.
