Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hawkeye Pierce
Answer: John Mulcahey
These were two of the characters on the series "M.A.S.H." who were in the cast from the first through the final episode. Hawkeye was played by Alan Alda, and Father John Mulcahey by William Christopher. "M.A.S.H." remains at this writing in 2016 one of the most critically-acclaimed and most-watched television series in TV history.
2. Ben Cartwright
Answer: Hop Sing
These were two of the regular cast of "Bonanza", which aired in the US for fourteen years, from 1959 to 1973. Cartwright was the patriarch of the family who owned a huge ranch, and Hop Sing was the ranch cook.
3. George Jefferson
Answer: Michael Stivic
George Jefferson and Michael Stivic were two regular characters on the groundbreaking and hilarious series "All in the Family" in the 1970s. Jefferson, played by Sherman Hemsley, "moved on up" to his own spinoff, "The Jeffersons", in 1975. It was one of the first major TV shows in America to feature a mostly black cast.
4. Abbey Bartlet
Answer: Charlie Young
These were two of the regulars on the series "The West Wing", which aired for seven seasons at the turn of the 21st Century. The series won many awards for excellence in writing, directing and acting during its run. Its cast included major stars like Martin Sheen, John Spencer, Rob Lowe, and Stockard Channing, and later, Alan Alda and Jimmy Smits.
5. Lou Grant
Answer: Chuckles the Clown
"The Mary Tyler Moore Show" aired in the 1970s on Saturday nights in the US. It was unusual in that its lead character was a single career woman with no steady boyfriend in her life. The series was a hit and spawned a number of spinoffs starring members of its cast. Lou Grant was Mary's boss, the managing editor of the news division at WJM-TV in Minneapolis; Chuckles the Clown, who appeared on the show only rarely, was the host of a WJM children's program.
He is best known for an episode in which he didn't appear on camera: "Chuckles Bites the Dust", the sad account of his untimely demise.
6. Alice Kramden
Answer: Trixie Norton
These were the female leads in the early television series "The Honeymooners", which also starred Jackie Gleason and Art Carney as their husbands. The series has achieved lasting fame despite the fact that only 39 episodes were made, and the show itself lasted through two seasons.
It differed from most sitcoms of the era in that the characters were working class people who lived in less-than-elegant walk-up apartments-Gleason portrayed a bus driver and Carney a sewer worker. Alice and Trixie were housewives and best friends.
7. Ugly Naked Guy
Answer: Gunther
These were two minor characters in the cast of "Friends"-although technically, Ugly Naked Guy may not qualify as a character since his face is never actually seen (thankfully!) by the audience. Gunther was the manager of Central Perk, the coffee shop frequented by the six friends. He carried a torch for Rachel throughout the series, but his affection was unrequited.
8. Tim Riggins
Answer: Tami Taylor
"Friday Night Lights", the series that links these two characters, was a TV show based on both a book and a movie by the same name. It ran on US TV from 2006-2011. The series achieved some measure of fame and received many awards and nominations over its run.
It followed the fortunes of a high school football team in a fictional Texas town, focusing on the coach and several players. Tim Riggins, played by Taylor Kitsch, was a gifted running back who suffered from a drinking habit and whose personal life was unstable, contributing to a general attitude of irresponsibility that did not serve him well on the team or in life. Tami Taylor, beautifully portrayed by Connie Britten, was the guidance counselor and later the principal of the town's high school, and married to the football coach.
9. Kate Austen
Answer: Sawyer Ford
"Lost" was arguably one of the greatest television series of all time. The two characters matched here were two of those who survived the crash of a commercial jet onto an uninhabited island in the South Pacific. The series featured science fiction-type story lines while developing several major characters through the use of flashbacks. Kate Austen was the female protagonist, and Sawyer Ford was a "bad boy" character who was revealed over time to be much more complex-and much more admirable-than originally portrayed.
The two fell in love, but were separated as the series progressed. There's more, but for the two people out there who haven't seen the show, no spoilers here!
10. Lady Mary Crawley
Answer: Anna Smith
These were members of the cast of "Downton Abbey", a historical drama that aired beginning in 2010 in the UK and on public television in 2011 in the US. Lady Mary was the eldest of three daughters of Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham and his American-born wife, Cora. Anna Smith was Mary's lady's maid. Both characters were featured in several story lines through the duration of the series, which ended in 2015.
