Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Samantha Bond
Answer: The Queen and I
"The Queen and I" was a 2018 adaptation of a 1992 satirical novel by Sue Townsend. In this, the monarchy in the United Kingdom is abolished by a new republican government, forcing the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family to live on a council estate in the Midlands.
This was the second time that Samantha Bond played Elizabeth, having made her first appearance in an episode of the five-part docu-drama series "The Queen" in 2009.
2. Gary Connery
Answer: Happy and Glorious
"Happy and Glorious" was produced as a segment of the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, featuring the character of James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) escorting the Queen to the Olympic Stadium. The piece was produced in three separate segments, with initially the Queen herself being escorted from her study at Buckingham Palace to a waiting helicopter, with the journey in the helicopter itself seeing her portrayed by actress Julia McKenzie.
The final segment, taking place live over the stadium during the ceremony itself, saw the Queen, this time played by stuntman Gary Connery, alongside Mark Sutton as Bond, perform a parachute jump into the stadium from the helicopter. To appear as realistic as possible, Connery had been fitted with a replica of the dress that the Queen was to wear for the ceremony by her dresser, and carried one of the Queen's own handbags that she had provided.
3. Barbara Flynn
Answer: The Queen
"The Queen" was a five-part docu-drama series produced as a co-production between Channel 4 and ABC. The series was broadcast over five consecutive nights in the UK, and featured a different actress (also including Samantha Bond) playing the queen in each episode. Barbara Flynn portrayed Elizabeth in episode 4, which detailed the events of the infamous 'annus horribilus' of 1992. Four years previously, she had appeared as Mary, Queen of Scots opposite Helen Mirren in the Channel 4 drama "Elizabeth I".
4. Claire Foy
Answer: The Crown
"The Crown" was developed by writer Peter Morgan, who had been responsible for the 2006 film "The Queen" starring Helen Mirren. The series was planned to last for a total of six seasons and 60 episodes, telling the story of Elizabeth's life from her marriage onwards, with the intention that the entire main cast be changed every two seasons to take into account the increasing ages of the characters. Starting in 2016, and for the first two seasons, the lead role was played by actress Claire Foy, who won Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards for her performance, before handing the role to Olivia Colman in season 3.
5. Rosemary Leach
Answer: Margaret
"Margaret" was a 2009 television film produced for the BBC portraying a fictionalised account of the downfall of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, with Lindsay Duncan in the lead role. Rosemary Leach appeared as the Queen, in the third of her three appearances as Elizabeth - the first was in "Prince William", a 2002 production broadcast on ABC, while the second was four years later in "Tea With Betty", a BBC production broadcast as part of its "Afternoon Play" strand.
6. Prunella Scales
Answer: A Question of Attribution
Prunella Scales first appeared in "A Question of Attribution", a one-act play by Alan Bennett about the revelation that Sir Anthony Blunt (played by Bennett), Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures, had been a Soviet spy, when it premiered at the National Theatre in London in November 1988.
In October 1991, an adaptation of the play was broadcast by the BBC for its "Screen One" strand, with Scales reprising the role of 'H.M.Q.', this time alongside James Fox as Blunt.
7. Anne Stallybrass
Answer: Diana: Her True Story
"Diana: Her True Story" was a two-part adaptation of the biography of Diana, Princess of Wales written by Andrew Morton and produced jointly by Sky and NBC, with the initial broadcast in February 1993. Anne Stallybrass was cast as the queen; she had previously appeared in the BBC series "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" as Jane Seymour.
8. Emma Thompson
Answer: Walking the Dogs
"Walking the Dogs" was a production from Sky's series of one-off plays entitled "Playhouse Presents", and was based on the real incident from 1982 when the queen was confronted in her own bedroom by intruder Michael Fagan. Broadcast in 2012, the half-hour drama featured Emma Thompson as Elizabeth and Eddie Marsan as Fagan; Thompson would subsequently become one of the few actors to portray both Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II on screen, when she played the Tudor monarch in an episode of the BBC sitcom "Upstart Crow".
9. Margaret Tyzack
Answer: Charles & Diana: A Royal Love Story
"Charles & Diana: A Royal Love Story" was one of two TV movies produced by US networks dramatising the engagement and marriage of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, of which this was broadcast first on 17 September 1982 on ABC. As part of a major British cast, which included Christopher Lee and Charles Gray, Margaret Tyzack was cast as Queen Elizabeth.
A classical actress and member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Tyzack had appeared in many notable television productions, including "I, Claudius" and "The Forsyte Saga".
