Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was one of the surprise hits of 2002. CBS tried to make it into a TV series, but it went nowhere. How many episodes aired before it was yanked?

Answer: Seven

"My Big Fat Greek Life" aired from January to April 2003. The TV series starred Nia Vardalos, Michael Constantine, Lainie Kazan, and Steven Eckholdt as Thomas Miller. In the movie, John Corbett played Toula's husband (the character was changed to Nia for the TV show). Corbett had a commitment with the FX Network and its show "Lucky" and was unable to appear. Executive producer Rita Wilson made a cameo as one of Nia's cousins. Star power couldn't save the show.
2. What year did the TV version of "9 to 5" first air on network television?

Answer: 1982

The 1980 movie starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, was about getting even with a sexist boss. The television starred Rita Moreno, Valerie Curtin and Rachel Dennison (Dolly Parton's sister). Moreno left after the original run and was later replaced by Sally Struthers. "9 to 5" aired for three brief seasons on ABC before going to syndication from 1986-1988.

The first season was four episodes in 1982 while the third was seven episodes in 1983.
3. What was the name of the "Animal House" spinoff that lasted 13 episodes in 1979?

Answer: Delta House

John Vernon, Stephen Furst, James Widdoes and Bruce McGill reprised their roles. The expectation of the same kind of humor as the film, as well as frequent fights between the producers and network caused the show to suffer, as it aired Saturdays at 8pm during "family hour". Michelle Pfeiffer also made one of her first TV appearances.
4. Who was not part of the TV version of "Clueless"?

Answer: Alicia Silverstone

Silverstone was working on a movie career, so Rachel Blanchard filled the role of Cher Horowitz. The show lasted from 1996 to 1997 on ABC and 1997-1999 on UPN.
5. One of the most successful movie-to-TV shows was "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". The series first aired in 1995.

Answer: False

The show debuted in 1997, five years after the movie. Sarah Michelle Geller took over Kristy Swanson's role. "Buffy" ran from 1997-2001 on the WB and from 2001-2003 on UPN with a total of 144 episodes. The show won three Emmy awards, but none in major categories.

It is considered one of the most memorable shows on the network and was re-run on the WB until the network was disbanded in 2006.
6. What high school sport was the subject of "Friday Night Lights"?

Answer: Football

The television version of the 2004 film about the competitive world of Texas high school football had a following during its five seasons (2006-2011), but never had the audience. The 2004 film followed the story of the 1988 Permian Panthers of Odessa, Texas and their run toward the 1988 state championship.
7. What network aired "Gung Ho"?

Answer: ABC

"Gung Ho" was based on the 1986 film of the same name about an American liaison to a Japanese car company. Scott Bakula took over Michael Keaton's role as Hunt Stevenson in the film. Gedde Watanabe reprised his role as plant manager Kaz Kazuhiro, as did the other Asian cast members. The show was put out of production after 13 episodes.
8. Who played Wayne Szalinski in the TV version of "Honey I Shrunk the Kids?"

Answer: Peter Scolari

The show was in syndication for 66 episodes from 1997-2000. Scolari played the scientist whose experiments went awry; the character was played by Rick Moranis in the 1989 film.
9. What 1976 Walter Matthau movie was made into a TV series in 1979?

Answer: The Bad News Bears

Jack Warden took over Matthau's role as Morris Buttermaker, a former minor league baseball player turned coach of a junior high team full of misfits and castoffs. The show lasted two seasons.
10. The TV version of "A League of Their Own" lasted six episodes in 1993.

Answer: True

The movie and show were based on the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which formed 1943 after a number of Major League players were fighting in World War II. The league lasted until 1954.
