Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alan Ruck played Cameron Frye, Ferris' nervy and hypochondriac friend. Between 1996 and 2002 he portrayed a character who, in many ways, was the complete opposite. In which politically-themed TV series did he play the part of Stuart Bondek, a mayor's chief of staff?

Answer: Spin City

"Spin City" launched on ABC in 1996 and featured Michael J. Fox and Barry Bostwick along with Ruck's "Ferris Bueller" co-star, Charlie Sheen.

Ruck's TV work also includes appearances in "Greek", "Mad About You" and "Stargate: Atlantis". He continued the sci-fi theme by playing Captain John Harriman in the 2007 film "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men".
2. Mia Sara played Sloane Peterson, Ferris' girlfriend. In 2001, she appeared alongside Matthew Modine, Richard Attenborough and Vanessa Redgrave in a TV movie. This was which modern day 'update' of a classic fairy tale?

Answer: Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story

Between 2002 and 2003, Sara also played the part of the ultimately evil Dr. Harleen Quinzel in the short-lived WB series "Birds of Prey", which centred on Batman's secret daughter!

On the Big Screen, in 1995, she won a Saturn Award as best supporting actress for the film "Timecop".
3. Cindy Pickett played Katie Bueller, Ferris' mother. In the late 1980s, she starred as Dr. Carol Novino in which Boston-based medical drama?

Answer: St. Elsewhere

"St. Elsewhere" aired on NBC between 1982 and 1988. Novino, among other things, provided love interest for leading character Donald Westphall.

In the 1970s, Pickett also featured in the soap "Guiding Light" as Jackie Marler Spaulding.
4. Jennifer Grey played Jeanie, Ferris' constantly frustrated sister. In 1995, she appeared as Mindy in season 1 of which long-running sitcom?

Answer: Friends

Grey's first acting role on TV was in a commercial for Dr. Pepper.

Mindy was one of Rachel's best friends and would have been bridesmaid at her wedding to Barry had it taken place. Instead she became his love interest. She appears in two episodes of the show, played by Grey in Season 1 and Jana Marie Hupp in Season 2.

In Grey's own life, she was briefly engaged to Matthew Broderick in 1986 having met him during filming of "Ferris Bueller". He subsequently married "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker in 1997.
5. Jeffrey Jones played Ed Rooney, the Principal determined to bring Ferris to justice. Between 2004 and 2006, he played A. W. Merrick in which historical drama series set in South Dakota?

Answer: Deadwood

The series fitted the Western genre but with many modern day themes. It aired on HBO and picked up a Golden Globe and eight Emmys. Merrick published the camp/town's newsletter, "The Black Hills Pioneer".

His film roles have included "Amadeus", "The Hunt for Red October", "Ed Wood" (ironically), "Sleepy Hollow" and the George Lucas aberration "Howard the Duck".
6. Edie McClurg played the part of Grace, the principal's secretary. Between 1986 and 1991, McClurg portrayed Patty Poole in a popular sitcom. This show can claim both to have changed its name twice and to have been aired by two different channels. What was its original title?

Answer: Valerie

"Valerie", starring Valerie Harper, first aired on NBC. Harper left after the second season, at which point it was renamed "Valerie's Family: The Hogans" for season 3 and thereafter "The Hogan Family". Season 6, the final season, was aired on CBS. Patty Poole was the family's neighbour.

Alongside her on screen presence, McClurg has voiced many children's animated characters including appearances in "Clifford the Big Red Dog", "Higglytown Heroes" and "Rocket Power" together with the films "Cars" and "Scooby-Doo! Pirates Ahoy!"
7. Jonathan Schmock played the snooty maitre d' who encounters the 'Sausage King of Chicago,' aka Ferris. In addition to his acting roles, Schmock is also known as a writer and director. As a writer, he contributed to most of the episodes of which popular teen series set in Westbridge, Massachusetts?

Answer: Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Coincidentally, this was another show that changed channels during its lifetime, starting out on ABC and finishing on WB.

In 2007, Schmock was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his writing contribution to "Real Time with Bill Maher".

Kristy Swanson who features as Simone Adamley in "Ferris Bueller" played Buffy in the original film version of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" but Sarah Michelle Gellar was preferred for the TV series.
8. Charlie Sheen played the young man that Jeanie Bueller meets at the police station. Sheen is well known for his movie roles but has also made significant contributions to two TV shows. One was in "Spin City" where he played the part of Charlie Crawford. More recently, he took the role of another 'Charlie' in which popular comedy series?

Answer: Two and a Half Men

In this CBS show, Sheen plays the part of free-living bachelor Charlie Harper whose lifestyle is cramped by the arrival of his brother and nephew to live with him.

He too has appeared in "Friends" for a single episode playing the part of Ryan who shared a bout of chicken pox with Phoebe in the second season.
9. Max Perlich played the part of Anderson, one of Ferris' fellow students. Between 1995 and 1997, he portrayed J. H. Brodie in which Baltimore-based cop series?

Answer: Homicide: Life on the Street

"Homicide: Life on the Street" aired on NBC between 1993 and 1999.

Perlich's television work includes roles in shows as diverse as "L.A. Law", "Charmed", "My Name Is Earl" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles". Filmwise, his movie appearances have included "Homeward Bound II", "Rush", "Maverick" and "Drugstore Cowboy".

In 1998, he did what fellow "Ferris Bueller" co-star Kristy Swanson failed to achieve and appeared as Whistler in the TV series, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".
10. And here's a question about the television work of the film itself. A spin-off TV series was created that sadly didn't see out its first season. Which actress, later to come to prominence in the cast of "Friends", played the part of Jeanie?

Answer: Jennifer Aniston

None of the original cast appeared in the TV series which changed many of the film's key details and went ahead despite the disapproval of both director John Hughes and Matthew Broderick (Ferris). Ferris' girlfriend Sloane was played by Ami Dolenz, daughter of Monkee Mickey Dolenz.
