Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where on Earth are the Doctor and the companions at the beginning of "It Takes You Away"?

Answer: Norway

Norway is quite familiar to the Doctor. The Tenth Doctor visited Darlig Ulv Stranden to see Rose Tyler in "Doomsday" (2006) and "Journey's End" (2009). And the Twelfth Doctor hung out with Vikings in "The Girl Who Died" (2015).

The episode starts with Graham pointing out fjords, establishing they are in Norway. The Doctor and the companions come across a cottage that appears abandoned, until they discover a young woman hiding in a closet. Her father is missing.

The First Doctor was in Mexico during "The Aztecs" (1964). The Twelfth Doctor makes a brief appearance in Australia during "The Pilot" (2017). While we didn't see it on-screen, apparently the Ninth Doctor did visit Japan with Rose Tyler and Jack Harkness.
2. What disability did Hanne, the girl they met in "It Takes You Away" (2018) have?

Answer: blind

Hanne, the Norwegian girl in the cabin, was blind. She lived with her father Erik in the woods after her mother Trine died. They moved from Oslo.

Hanne was played by Ellie Wallwork. This is her first appearance on television, although she was in the 2012 motion picture "Imagine" about students at a school for the blind. Wallwork is blind in real life and attends the Royal National College for the Blind. She is a talented singer and songwriter and her work can be seen on YouTube.
3. Where was the portal to the alternate universe located?

Answer: mirror

The anti-zone separating the two universes was behind a mirror. The Doctor was able to use the sonic in order to stabilize the portal so they could go through.

If you are looking for alternate universes in refrigerators, check out "Ghostbusters" (1984). If you are seeking them in a wardrobe, read the works of C.S. Lewis. And you can find alternate realities (perhaps all realities) in a bookcase in "Interstellar" (2014).
4. What was the name of the strange man the Doctor encountered in the anti-zone?

Answer: Ribbons

He was known as Ribbons of the Seven Stomachs. Ribbons had a fascination with the sonic screwdriver, He referred to it as a "tubular." Ribbons met a rather nasty end, getting devoured by flesh eating insects.

Ribbons was not a particularly likable character, as he had a fetish for cannibalism and seemed a trifle greedy.
5. What kind of flesh-eating insects inhabited the cave between the universes (aka the anti-zone)?

Answer: moths

The Doctor, Yaz and Graham narrowly escaped being eaten by piranha-like moths. Buttons was not so lucky. Hanne and Ryan managed to escape the moths as well.

Spiders have been a quite frequent threat in the "Doctor Who" universe. The Doctor did encounter flies when he was trapped inside the confession dial in "Heaven Sent" (2015).
6. What character from "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" makes a reappearance in "It Takes You Away"?

Answer: Ryan's grandmother Grace

Grace, Ryan's grandmother and Graham's wife, died after falling off a tower in "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" (2018), giving the episode title multiple meanings. Grace appears in the alternate reality as a manifestation of the consciousness that is guiding the universe, in order to make Graham want to stay.

Grace was played by Sharon Clarke, who is probably best known for her work on the British medical drama "Holby City" (2003-2008). Among her many television credits, she played singers Bessie Smith and Nina Simone on "Psycho Bitches" (2013).

Having the opportunity to see lost love ones has a strong history in "Doctor Who." Rose met a younger Pete Tyler in "Father's Day" (2005). And Clara Oswald encountered a deceased Danny Pink in "Death in Heaven" (2015) and "Last Christmas" (2015).
7. What was the name of the conscious alternate universe that the Doctor, Graham and Yaz found themselves in?

Answer: Solitract

The universe was known as the Solitract. According to the Doctor, it cannot exist in the regular universe because it blocks anything and everything from happening. At some point towards the start of this universe, the Solitract was placed in its own separate universe. Anxious for company, the Solitract built a portal to Norway.

When the universe began to collapse in upon itself, the Doctor convinced the Solitract to let her leave. The Doctor has often by caught in collapsing universes - the Eleventh Doctor was in a collapsing bubble universe in "Hide" (2013).

Castrovalva was an alternate universe featured in the debut story for Peter Davison, the Fifth Doctor in 1982. The Fourth Doctor spent time in E-Space (also known as Exo-Space); it's where he picked up Adric (Matthew Waterhouse). Trine was the mother of Hanne.
8. What sort of animal did the Doctor converse with in the alternate universe in "It Takes You Away"?

Answer: frog

The Solitract transformed itself into a frog. It was established that frogs were a favorite of Grace. Graham was wearing a frog necklace that belonged to Grace. The Doctor was actually fascinated by the talking frog, saying "You are the maddest, most beautiful thing I've ever experienced, and I haven't even scratched the surface."

It was established in "A Town Called Mercy" (2012) that the Doctor can speak horse. And the Doctor mentioned the Wooly Rebellion, a conflict that takes place between sheep and humans in the early 23rd century.
9. According to the Doctor, how many grandmothers did she have?

Answer: 7

The Doctor claimed that she had seven grandmothers. Granny Five was her favorite, and the one who had told her bedtime stories about the Solitract. Granny Five also said that Granny Two was an agent for the Zygons.
10. Who wrote the series 11 episode "It Takes You Away"?

Answer: Ed Hime

Ed Hime wrote "It Takes You Away." It is his first script for "Doctor Who." Hime is noted for this work on the BBC drama "Skins" (2009-2010). His roots are in theatre; he wrote multiple plays which were performed in the West End between 2002 and 2010. Hime has won several awards for his writing, including a Prix Italia award.

This is Jamie Child's third episode in series 11, after directing "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" (2018) and "Demons of the Punjab" (2018). Childs has also worked on the crime drama "Vera" (2016-17), "Next of Kin" (2017) and "Stan Lee's Lucky Man" (2018).

Norwegian actor Christian Rubeck played Erik. He has been active in Scandinavian films and television since 2005. He often plays scientists, including Otto Hahn in "Einstein's Big Idea" (2005) and Werner Heisneberg in "Genius: Einstein" (2017). Rubeck is familiar with London as he attended the Drama Center there.

Kevin Eldon played Ribbons. Eldon has been acting quite regularly in a wide range of television shows since 1994. This is not his first time in the "Doctor Who" universe. In 2001, he was in an animated mini-series called "Doctor Who: Death Comes to Time" with Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred. A lot of Eldon's work has been in comedies.
