Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the battle where humans defeated the Daleks in the Ninth Century?

Answer: Hope Valley

"Resolution" opens with humans battling a Dalek invasion in the ninth century and managing to defeat it. They dismembered the Dalek and spread it around the world, in hopes it would never return. One of the pieces was sent to Anuta Island, which is a real place in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. It is noted for its sustainability. The second piece was kept in Siberia. And the third was lost in Yorkshire, England. The name of the 9th century battle was Hope Valley.

Spiridon is where the Third Doctor and Jo Grant fought the Daleks in "Planet of the Daleks" (1973). Skaro is the home planet of the Daleks; the Doctor has visited there many times, including the Fourth Doctor in "Genesis of the Daleks" (1975) and the Twelfth Doctor in "The Witch's Familiar" (2015). The Third Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith fought the Daleks on Exxilon in "Death to the Daleks" (1974); it is one of Jon Pertwee's last adventures.
2. Where in Sheffield did the archaeologists discover the Dalek remains?

Answer: town hall

They were digging underneath the town hall, which is located above a series of water filled tunnels. The archaeologists uncovered a human body (the long deceased courier) and some Dalek remains, which were reanimated when they were placed under ultra-violet light.

The police station is where Yaz was working when we first met her in "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" (2018). Park Hill is the housing complex where Yaz and her family live - we saw it in "Arachnids in the UK" and "Demons of the Punjab" (both 2018). Robertson's hotel was the center of the giant spider colony in "Arachnids."
3. What was the name of the archeologist who got taken over by the Dalek in "Resolution"?

Answer: Lin

Lin was the unfortunate carrier of the Dalek, which looked like a squid, and used tentacles to control her. Lin did fight back against the Dalek and eventually forced it to leave her.

Lin was played by Charlotte Ritchie, probably best known for her turn as nurse Barbara Gilbert on the popular BBC series "Call the Midwife" (2015-2018). In 2016, she appeared in a short film called "Time Traveler's Support Group".

The most famous archeologist in "Doctor Who" lore is Doctor River Song, who married the Eleventh Doctor. She lived her life in a different chronological order than the Doctor, but they had many wild adventures together. River was played by Alex Kingston.

Marcus Scarman was an Oxford professor of Archeology that the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith encountered while fighting the evil Egyptian god Sutekh ["The Pyramids of Mars" (1975)].
4. What type of item was Ryan's dad Aaron attempting to sell?

Answer: microwave ovens

Ryan's dad, who had abandoned his son years earlier, suddenly appeared out of nowhere seeking to make amends. Ryan had been raised by his grandmother after his mother died. His grandmother died defending the world from an alien invader. Aaron avoided his mother's funeral.

Aaron, who had a background in engineering, apparently designed a new high-tech combination convection and microwave oven. It would prove useful later on.

Aaron was played by Daniel Adegboyega, who is probably most noted for playing Bertram in the crime drama "Save Me" (2018). He began acting in television 2010.
5. What food item does the Doctor send Graham to get during "Resolution"?

Answer: peanut butter

She sent Graham off to get peanut butter. Whether it was to keep him out of harm's way or because she actually needed the peanut butter is uncertain.

Bananas are sort of a running joke in New Who. The Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors were all fans of bananas; Eleven even swapped out River Song's gun for a banana. Peanut butter and bananas are also eternally linked thanks to Elvis Presley.

The Thirteenth Doctor likes croissants for breakfast. She also wanted a fried egg sandwich when she was regenerating; not unusual, as the Doctor tends to have odd food cravings during regeneration.
6. How does the Doctor manage to destroy the Dalek machine?

Answer: Melts it with oven gadgetry

Aaron, Ryan's father, turned out to be quite a talented engineer, and he helped the Doctor rewire his microwave oven and turn it into a weapon that could be used to super heat the Dalek and melt its metal components.

The insane Dalek sludge was how Clara and the Doctor escaped the Daleks in "The Witch's Familiar" (2015). While many versions of the Doctor have blown up many Daleks using explosives, none in this episode. The Eleventh Doctor used his regeneration to destroy the Daleks on the planet Trenzalore in "The Time of the Doctor" (2013).
7. Who did the Dalek take control of once its battle armor was destroyed?

Answer: Aaron

The Dalek took control of Aaron and forced the Doctor to take it to the Dalek Fleet. The Doctor tricked the Dalek and took it to the outer edge of a super nova, where gravitational forces sucked it in. Ryan was able to save his father, and they had a sort of reconciliation at the end of the episode. Aaron declined the offer to come along with them on the TARDIS.
8. What was the name of the corporation that owned the Dalek weapon?

Answer: MDZ

It was the MDZ corporation. While there are several companies that have those initials, the weapons company in "Resolution" (2019) does not appear to be based on any real company.

The closest real-life large company with the initials is Mondelez International (MDLZ), the fine folks who bring the world Oreo cookies, Triscuits and Cadbury chocolate.
9. Why was the Doctor unable to get in touch with UNIT to assist her against the Dalek in "Resolution"?

Answer: They were shut down by budget cuts

In a comic moment in a mostly heavy episode, the Doctor attempts to get in touch with UNIT only to reach a government helpline - which turned out to be zero help at all. UNIT had been shut down over budget shortfalls, as a result of other countries failing to finance the organization.

Turmezistan is a fictional Asian nation that appeared in "The Zygon Invasion/Zygon Inversion" (2015) and "The Pyramid at the End of the World" (2017). The Dalek did interfere with the Doctor in several ways, but didn't block her phone. Jemma Redgrave (who plays Kate Stewart) was born in January 1965, so retirement would be a little soon in January 2019, even for a government service job.
10. Who directed the 2019 New Years Doctor Who episode "Resolution"?

Answer: Wayne Yip

Wayne Yip directed "Resolution". The British director also directed two 2017 episodes, "Empress of Mars" and "The Lie of The Land." Yip started his directing career in 2010. Some of his earliest work was on "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" (2011), which starred "Doctor Who" alumni Billie Piper.

Rachel Talalay was a favorite of Steven Moffat, directing the season finales on season 8, 9 and 10. Her episodes include "Heaven Sent" (2015) and "Twice Upon A Time" (2017).

Daniel Nettheim directed several episodes during the Moffat era, including "The Zygon Invasion/Zygon Inversion" (2015) and "Extremis" (2017).

Nick Hurran worked on "Doctor Who" from 2011 to 2013. He directed the fiftieth anniversary special "The Day of the Doctor" (2013).
