1. What historic event is taking place during "Demons of the Punjab"?

Answer: The partition of India and Pakistan

The episode is set in August 1947, as India and Pakistan are being divided into separate nations. Violence between Hindus and Muslims resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths; the violence is vividly displayed in the film "Gandhi" (1982). The violence is in the background in "Doctor Who," even the murder of Prem.

Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948. He led the Salt March, a protest against British taxes, in March 1930. The Amritsar Massacre took place on April 13, 1919 when British troops fired on unarmed civilians, killing at least 379 and wounding over 1000.
2. What does Yasmin's grandmother give her as a gift?

Answer: a watch

Yasmin's grandmother, Nani, gives her a broken wristwatch. She insists the watch never be repaired. The Doctor ties the watch into the TARDIS's telepathic circuits and takes Yasmin back to August 1947. After the obligatory speech about interfering with your own timeline, naturally.

The leaf goes to Yasmin's sister, Sonya. The love letters went to Yasmin's mother, Najia. The old rope was used in the wedding ceremony.

Later on, The Thijarans explain to the Doctor they have gotten out of the assassin business, and are now witnesses for those who die alone. The Doctor firsts encounters them at the murder site of a holy man.
