Actor Nick Berry also played Simon Wicks in the British soap 'EastEnders', from 1985 - 1990.

In 1992 he reached number 2 in the UK music charts, with the Buddy Holly song "Heartbeat", which is the theme tune of the programme.

The series is filmed in North Yorkshire, and set in Ashfordly and Aidensfield, which are both fictional locations

Mark McManus played Detective Chief Insepctor Jim Taggart. He sadly died on 6th June 1994.

Taggart's boss in the series was Superintendent Jack McVitie, played by Iain Anderson.

Harriet Buchanan played Taggart's wife, Jean, who was disabled and in a wheelchair.

There have been guest appearances by many famous names, including Jill Gascoigne, who starred in the police drama, 'The Gentle Touch', and Amanda Redman, who stars in another police series,'New Tricks'.

The title of the series came from the Cockney rhyming slang phrase for Flying Squad, which is "Sweeney Todd".

There were also 2 films based on the series, 'The Sweeney!', released in 1977 and 'Sweeney 2', which was released in 1978.

Guest appearances were made on the show by British favourites, Morecambe and Wise, as well as other stars, including Diana Dors and George Cole.

Dennis Waterman who played George Carter went on to star with George Cole in the series 'Minder', which was shown on British television between 1979 and 1994.

John Thaw starred in the police drama 'Inspector Morse', which was shown on British television between 1987 and 2000.

Stratford Johns played Detective Chief Inspector Charles Barlow and Frank Windsor played Detective Sergeant John Watt, in 'Z-Cars'.

'Softly, Softly' starred these two characters, and was broadcast on British television between 1966 and 1969. Detective Sergeant John Watt was promoted to Detective Inspector in the series. The series had a name change in 1969 to,'Softly, Softly: Taskforce', and it ran until 1976.

'Z-Cars' also featured John Thaw as the character DC Eliot in 1963-1964, and actor Leonard Rossiter as DI Bamber in 1963.

When Sam Tyler finds himself in 1973, he is a Detective Inspector and his boss is Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt, who is played by Philip Glennister. They clash over policing techniques and approaches, due to the time difference.

In this series, he falls in love with Annie Cartwright (played by Liz White). They do not have a sexual relationship, but he is able to confide in her and they kiss at the end of the series.

In the episode entitled,'Helpless', in an effort to introduce equality in to the CID office, Annie is made a WDC (Woman Detective Constable), but has to suffer sexism which was 'normal' and acceptable in that era.

The series takes its name from the David Bowie song, 'Life on Mars', which was a hit in the seventies, when the series is set.

'Ashes to Ashes', stars Keeley Hawes as Detective Inspector Alex Drake, who is shot in a hostage situation whilst at work in 2008. She is in a coma and finds herself in 1981. Her boss is Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt (who was Sam Tyler's boss in 'Life on Mars'). He has transferred to the Metroplitan police.

She knows of Sam Tyler and his account of going back in time, from notes he made (whilst in a coma in 2006!). She is also a trained police psychologist and was investigating his suicide. When she finds herself in 1981, she thinks that she is hallucinating due to having read the events written by Sam Tyler.

The series takes its name from the title of the David Bowie song, 'Ashes to Ashes', which was a hit of the decade in which it is set.
