Peach with her pushy ways forces Roscoe to go after July even though the likelihood of finding him is slim in a state as big as Texas. His trip is full of worries from the start, because Roscoe has led a sheltered life.

Janie is being abused by Big Sam, who bought her, and she breaks his legs while he is sleeping to escape from him and to follow Roscoe, moving faster in bare feet than he does on his horse!
