When July comes back to Clara's ranch after Ellie takes off for St. Louis with the two buffalo hunters, Clara offers him a job to work with her horses, and be with his son. He accepts.

Answer: Dish's

Dish loves his horse and doesn't want to part with it. That would be understandable after a few thousand miles!

Answer: Call comes to their rescue and almost kills the Army scout.

When Call sees Newt, especially, getting whipped, his fury is amazingly quick and precise. He is so relentless in his desire to find every conceivable way to do damage to that scout. Gus has to lasso him to stop him. Then, Call apologizes to the crowd saying that he doesn't like rude behavior in a man, and won't tolerate it.

The boys don't know what to expect and had to get pretty drunk first. Not all of them could handle it either. Pretty scary that Buffalo Heifer.

Clara has had her share of tragedy. She has already lost her three sons. She is a very tough and wise woman for her time.

Pea Eye truly believes that Deets shows him the way back to the herd. This is a special, supernatural, and soulful element in the story. When Call asks where Gus is, Pea Eye asks, "Where's Deets?"

Gus would not let him. He wants to make a walking stick out of the other leg bone. The doctor encourages him to take the other leg off and spend the rest of his days sipping whiskey and listening to whores play the piano. Gus tells him to go get some more whiskey and tip the piano player, so she keeps playing.

Gus thinks that Call needs the adventure and Call agrees to do it. The doctor suggests that Call should let Gus stay in a shed in Miles City for the winter and that Call can come back in the spring and get him to take to Texas after the weather breaks. Call does.
