Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was unusual about this episode?

Answer: Vivian Vance didn't appear in it

For reasons I cannot determine, Vivian Vance did not appear in this episode. Most of Ethel's lines in the original script were turned over to Fred, which caused Fred and Lucy to do some unlikely scheming together. Vivian Vance was back on the set filming the next episode, "The Publicity Agent."
2. What was one of the products considered by the production crew to fill the Vitameatavegamin bottles?

Answer: Honey

It was a real challenge to find the right liquid concoction to fill the Vitametavegamin bottles. It had to ooze out, not flow freely, and taste good to Lucille Ball. Several products, including honey, were considered, until apple pectin was found. Miss Ball loved the taste, and the bottles were filled with the product.
3. To convince Ricky that she can do the TV commercial for his TV special, Lucy takes out the works of their television set and puts on an impromptu commercial for which product?

Answer: Philip Morris

At that time, the sponsors of "I Love Lucy" were the Philip Morris Tobacco company, so the scriptwriters had Lucy do a commercial for the company as part of her TV show.
4. Why did Maury Thompson, the script clerk of "I Love Lucy," play himself in this episode?

Answer: In case Miss Ball went up in her lines during the "Vitameatavegamin" bit, he would be there to correct her

Lucille Ball was very concerned that she might forget some of the complex lines during the 'Vitameatavegamin' bit, so she had script clerk Maury Thompson stand by with the script in case she needed prompting. As any fan of the series knows, Lucille Ball made it through the bit without needing any prompting.
5. When Lucy rehearses the TV commercial, there is a sign behind her promoting the product. What slogan is on the sign?

Answer: "Spoon Your Way to Health"

The sign reads "Spoon Your Way to Health." It also states "Join the Parade...Buy Vitameatavegamin today." I have consulted several "I Love Lucy" references books, but none state which of the "I Love Lucy" writers invented the product name 'Vitameatavegamin.'
6. When Ricky tells Lucy that she didn't have to remove the TV, as the entire chassis slides out all in piece, Lucy makes her famous "ewwww" sound which she first made where?

Answer: A radio commercial

Lucille first made the famous "ewwww" sound when she played Little Miss Muffet in a radio commercial. Therefore, the "I Love Lucy" writers referred to that inflection as "The Spider."
7. Who on the "I Love Lucy" production team is mentioned in this episode?

Answer: Wilbur Hatch

Right before singing, Ricky gestures to the orchestra and states "Mr. Hatch, if you please." Wilbur Hatch was the conductor of the Desi Arnaz Orchestra for the series.

Jess Oppenheimer was the producer; Marc Daniels the director; and Hal King did Lucille Ball's makeup.
8. Ross Elliott, who played the director, made his first TV appearance with Lucille Ball in this episode. How many times did he and Miss Ball ultimately work together?

Answer: seven

Ross Elliott worked with Lucille Ball on television a total of seven times. The last time was on an episode of "Here's Lucy" in 1974. Mr. Elliott highly admired Miss Ball and in tribute to her named his dog Lucy.
9. According to the commercial, when should you take Vitameatavegamin?

Answer: After every meal

According to the TV commercial, "All you do is take a tablespoon after every meal." Vitameatavegamin contains vitamins, meat, vegetables, minerals... and is 23 percent alcohol!
10. The original script had an additional scene that was not filmed.

Answer: True

Yes, the original script had a brief "tag" scene where Lucy has a hangover due to all the Vitameatavegamin she consumes. It was not filmed due to time constraints.

One of the most famous bits in television history:

"Hello, friends. I'm your Vitameatavegamin girl. Are you tired, rundown, listless? Do you poop out at parties? Are you unpopular? The answer to all your problems is in this little bottle: Vitameatavegamin. Vitameatavegamin contains vitamins, meat, vegetables, and minerals. Yes, with Vitameatavegamin you can spoon your way to health. All you do is take a tablespoon after every meal. It's so tasty, too. Just like candy. So why don't you join the thousands of happy, peppy people and get a great bottle of Vitameatavegamin tomorrow. That's Vita... Meta... Vegamin."
