Since Fred was the band manager, he thought they could save money by using an old trunk from their vaudeville days for the band uniforms. Fred defied anyone to find the hole with the naked eye, but Ethel poked her fingers right through the hole, which was hidden under a sticker. Lucy asked how it got a hole in it, and Ethel said Fred bought the trunk from a man with a seal act.

Ricky and Fred said they had their papers, while Ethel pulled her birth certificate out of her pocket. She didn't want to show it, and Lucy said it was because Ethel didn't want them to see the year she was born. Fred encouraged her to show it, saying she could cover the year with her finger.

He just thought Lucy and Ricky might like to see what Lincoln's signature looked like. Ethel was not amused.

Lucy's mother and a friend were on a motor trip through New England, and she wasn't going to arrive at Lucy's until the day before they left for Europe. After hearing the girls discuss Paris on the itinerary, Fred warned the mademoiselles of Paris that Corporal Mertz was going to make his triumphant return. He later marched in wearing his old uniform and singing "Mademoiselle from Armentieres". He admitted the uniform could use a little letting out here and there. Ethel remarked, "It's a good thing the Kaiser didn't see you in that outfit, he never would've surrendered", which prompted Lucy to remember that her friend Helen Erickson's second husband's name was Kaiser.

Ricky called the passport office and asked, "if you want to get a pass-a-port and can't find your birthitificate, what do you do?" (of course he had to repeat "pass-a-port" and "birthitificate" for the person). Since Lucy had misplaced her older living blood relative (her mother), she could get affidavits from two old friends of the family who knew when and where she was born.

Helen, who babysat Lucy back in Jamestown, agreed to sign the affidavit, but when her husband saw the year Lucy was born, he remarked that Helen wasn't even born at the time. Lucy tried to get Helen to admit the truth, but Helen wouldn't admit her real age to her husband, and even said that Lucy babysat her.

Lucy got in the trunk and had Ethel close it. She said how comfortable it was, but then panicked and told Ethel to let her out. Ethel said it was locked and asked if there was a key. Lucy said yes, then realized that she had it, but it was in her pocket and she couldn't move her arms.

When Ethel went to find Fred, Ricky came in and used the trunk as a drum while going over some music with Marco, not knowing Lucy was in there. When Ethel came back, Lucy said she couldn't hear anything because Ricky just beat out a concerto for piano and trunk.

Dr. Peterson said he couldn't sign anything until he was sure that she was Lucille McGillicuddy. Lucy tried showing one eye, the other eye, her nose and then her mouth through the hole in the trunk, but Dr. Peterson said all that was, was an eye, an eye, a nose and a mouth, and he'd seen so many. Lucy then remembered being bitten by a cat on the ear, and that Dr. Peterson had given her stitches for it.

She put her ear up to the hole, but Dr. Peterson said, scar or no scar, she couldn't be who she said she was because Lucille McGillicuddy had brown hair. Ethel hollered, "Look at the roots! The roots!", but Lucy gave up and began crying.

When Ethel went to go look for Fred again, Dr. Peterson remembered that he had taught Lucy a song when she was little. He said if she could sing that song all the way through with him like she used to, then she must be Lucille McGillicuddy. Lucy started singing "Skip to my Lou", with the doctor joining in as he began dancing. Ricky walked in, saw a strange man dancing and singing, and then stared wide-eyed at the trunk when he heard Lucy's voice coming from it as she joined the doctor on the chorus.

He blurted out, "What's going on here?", scaring the doctor. Lucy introduced Ricky to Dr. Peterson, who said, "How do you do? I'm the doctor who brought your wife into the world". Ricky responded with, "Oh you are, huh. I don't know whether to thank you or punch you in the nose".

Fred finally arrived with a crowbar which he and Ricky used to open the trunk. Lucy came out, on her knees, and said hello to the doctor. He remarked that he thought she'd be bigger by now. She asked him if he had any idea why there was no record of her being born in Jamestown. He said she wasn't born in Jamestown, she was born in West Jamestown.

Just after Dr. Peterson told her about West Jamestown, a special delivery letter arrived for Lucy. It was from her mother, who said that she and her friend had car trouble and got stuck in West Jamestown overnight, so she picked this up and hoped Lucy could use it. The enclosure turned out to be Lucy's birth certificate.
