Answer: A bottle of seasickness pills

After what happened to Lucy on the Staten Island ferry, Mrs. McGillicuddy remembered to bring something for Lucy's seasickness. She pulled out a huge bottle full of pills and handed it to Lucy. Ricky told Lucy she wouldn't need those, but Lucy said, "Well, I know, but my stomach will rest easier if my mind knows they're here".

Lucy said of course she would buy her a bottle of perfume, and it would be a present from them. She asked what kind of perfume and Mrs. Trumbull hesitatingly whispered in her ear. As Mrs. Trumbull tried to shush her, Lucy blurted out the name of the perfume she was surprised Mrs. Trumbull had said, which was 'My Sin'.

Mrs. McGillicuddy and Mrs. Trumbull had waited until the last minute to disembark, affording Lucy a little more time with Little Ricky. But standing at the rail waving goodbye, Lucy whined to Ethel that she missed Little Ricky. Lucy said she just had to give him one more kiss, so she ran down to the dock.

While seeing Little Ricky one last time, Lucy's skirt became tangled on a bicycle. The owner, a bike messenger, came back and tried to help untangle the skirt, but to no avail. Ricky returned to the ship's rail, waved and called out, "Goodbye Little Ricky! Goodbye Mrs. Trumbull! Goodbye Mother! Goodbye Lucy!", then did a double take and yelled, "Lucy!".

The bike messenger couldn't free her skirt, so Lucy pushed him down, picked the bike up and started up the gangway. He stopped her and said she couldn't take his bike. She asked if he had a knife, but all he had was a pencil. In frustration, Lucy finally unzipped her skirt, stepped out of it and ran up the gangway just as it started to move back from the ship.

After Ricky appeared in the doorway, he encouraged her to jump for it, but just as she got to the end, the ship started pulling away.

Answer: "Have you got a pilot boat that goes to the pilot boat?"

The ship's officer told Ricky to call the dock agent, have him page Lucy, and tell her to catch the pilot boat. When he spoke with her, Ricky passed this on, and told Lucy to ask the dock agent where to find the pilot boat. Lucy followed the man's directions, but then came limping back to his desk a short while later.

She had seen the pilot boat moving, raced down the pier to jump on it, and then found out that it had been arriving on the pier, not leaving. Meanwhile, the other pilot boat which she should have caught, had left.

The dock agent suggested that Lucy take another ship which was leaving in a couple of days, but Lucy said she wanted to be on the boat with her husband and friends (and eat her bon voyage fruit). He then suggested that Lucy take a helicopter out to the ship, and directed her to go to Idlewild Airport.

At the airport, the dispatcher noticed her lack of a skirt and said, "I, uh, beg your pardon, madam. But, uh, your slip is showing". Lucy said she knew, and that she had torn her slip when she jumped for the pilot boat, prompting the dispatcher to ask, "You jumped right out of your skirt?".

After the dispatcher got her a pair of coveralls to wear, Lucy boarded the helicopter. She had her face covered with her hands at first, but after talking to the pilot, she became slightly more comfortable. Lucy observed that all you could see was water, "except for that cigar someone threw away".

The pilot looked at what Lucy was referring to and told her that "cigar" was her ship, the SS Constitution. Lucy looked down incredulously and said, "Gee, the water must have shrunk it".

When the pilot told her to start getting ready, Lucy straightened her hat, smoothed her hair and said, "How do I look?". The pilot explained that he meant she should secure her harness. When Lucy asked why she needed a harness, he explained that they weren't allowed to land.

He said he would hover over the boat and lower her by the cable. When she first heard about the hovering and lowering, Lucy told the pilot to go back to the airport, but he assured her it was safe and this was the only way she could get on the ship.

Answer: She fainted.

While the pilot was counting down for Lucy to jump out, Lucy asked if by any chance he had enough fuel to fly her to Europe. When he said no, she suggested he could borrow some from the captain of the ship, and that she would pay for it. Just before the pilot began lowering her, Lucy shut her eyes tightly and held her nose closed.

As she landed on the deck, Ricky tried to get the harness undone, but Lucy was raised back up momentarily, taking Ricky with her. They came back down and Lucy was unharnessed.

She tried to show her bravado, saying the pilot hadn't wanted her to do that, but as she said she was fine and there wasn't anything to it, she fainted.
