Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the ridiculous card game that the characters play towards the beginning of the episode 'Out of Gas', which individual 'ups the ante' by throwing in a feather boa?

Answer: Klinger

Can you imagine anyone else throwing in a feather boa in a game of poker where clothing is at stake? Other items to go in the pot include wool socks, earmuffs, a ski mask and a bath robe (sack cloth). Incidentally, Charles wins the pot with a flush. Wonder what he'll do with the feather boa?
2. Colonel Potter announces that casualties are on the way, cutting the poker game short. In the operating room, Margaret learns from Klinger that the 4077th is out of sodium pentathol. It appears that Zale has traded the pentathol, for what?

Answer: Plasma

Specifically, Zale has traded the sodium pentathol to the 8063rd for the plasma. Why Zale is being given the authority to make such deals for medical supplies is beyond me!

When Colonel Potter asks if Zale can get the pentathol back from the 8063rd, Zale announces that they have already traded it to the 121st for penicillin, who in turn have traded it to a South Korean unit for some vegetables. Margaret suggests shooting Zale.
3. Sodium pentathol happens to be a key element in the anesthesia process. Without it, Colonel Potter suggests using ether and what other item?

Answer: Nitrous oxide

The problem with using ether, as we shall soon see, is that it's not only flammable, but its vapors can cause those using it to feel dizziness to the point where they may even faint.
4. Radar makes a call to 'I' Corps in search of some sodium pentathol. On the phone with a certain Colonel Hooten, Radar makes a typical Radarism when he says, 'We're really up the river without a ______.' (Fill in the blank)

Answer: Creek

Radar has always had a little difficulty with the English language. Another example from this very episode comes when he tries to pronounce 'anesthesia', and ends up just describing it as 'the stuff that makes you go to sleep'. In the case of the 'up the river' phrase, methinks he meant to say, 'Up the creek without a paddle'.
5. Which member of the surgical team passes out from the ether vapors that are passing through the O.R.?

Answer: Margaret

Margaret has just instructed one of her nurses on how to properly use ether. Unfortunately, she seems to have taken too much into her lungs and she faints. When Hawkeye works to revive Margaret, she mumbles, 'Keep your hands to yourself, General.'
6. The subject of the black market comes up in conversation. However, Father Mulcahy in particular is resistant to the idea of acquiring sodium pentathol by illicit means.

Answer: False

Indeed, not! As a matter of fact, it is the good Father who suggests dealing with black marketeers in the first place, he having a good understanding of their methods. It seems that Mulcahy has been working through the black market to acquire supplies for his orphan children.
7. Father Mulcahy is selected to go deal with the black marketeers. Before leaving, he gets contributions from the various dwellers of the 4077th. Besides $10, what else is Charles goaded into contributing?

Answer: A case of wine

Charles is against the idea of sacrificing his last case of vintage wine, but is convinced when BJ claims that he and Hawkeye will just sneak the case to Father Mulcahy anyway. Just to be on the safe side, however, Charles decides to go with Mulcahy to meet the black marketeers.
8. Radar accompanies Father Mulcahy to make the exchange with the black marketeers.

Answer: False

Initially, the idea is that Radar will go along with Father Mulcahy, but as mentioned previously, Charles insists on coming so as to 'protect [his] investment'.
9. In the operating room, Hawkeye has a friendly conversation with a kid from which small town in Indiana?

Answer: Idaville

Hawkeye surprises the young man by describing his small town, complete with dances at the American Legion hall, greasy spoon restaurant at the edge of town and a Studebaker dealership with a searchlight advertising their new models. When the kid asks Hawkeye when he was in Idaville, Hawkeye responds that he hasn't, but that he grew up in the same small town in Maine.
10. Is Father Mulcahy able to make a fair trade with the black marketeers?

Answer: No

The black marketeers steal Charles' French wine, giving Charles and Father Mulcahy nothing in return. They also steal Charles' fine parka! Dejected, the two of them leave empty-handed. Wisely, Father Mulcahy realizes that the black marketeers will be enjoying the wine, and he devises a plan to steal the wrongdoers truck. Mulcahy and Charles are able to make off with seven cases of pentathol, but the wine and parka are sacrificed.
