Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the operating room at the beginning of the episode the doctors complain about problems in surgery. Colonel Potter blames these problems on the fact that they are out of curare. What is the purpose of curare?

Answer: Muscle relaxant

Curare is actually a dangerous poison found in some plants in South America. Natives there have tipped their arrows with the substance for centuries. In larger doses, it can cause paralyzation and asphyxiation. In minute quantities, it can relax the muscles.
2. After the session in surgery, Klinger wanders the compound when suddenly a truck approaches. It's Klinger's friend Colin Turnbull from the 2nd Princess Pat Battalion. From what country is Turnbull?

Answer: Canada

Turnbull is the supply officer for his battalion. He's a comrade of Klinger's over the radio. You can tell he's Canadian by all the 'ehs' in his speech...that and he admits his Canadianhood to Klinger.
3. Before his departure, Turnbull gives Klinger a bottle of fine wine in return for Klinger's generous offering of some delicious fruit cocktail. Precisely, what is the variety and year of this wine?

Answer: '47 Margaux

Margaux is a village in south-west France that lies along the Haut Médoc wine making region, not far from Bordeaux. Margaux has been mentioned many times in various films, television shows, etc., for example in 'Schindler's List'.
4. Klinger sells the bottle of wine to Hawkeye for a mere $10.

Answer: False

Even worse, Klinger gives the '47 Margaux to Hawkeye to cancel out a debt of $5 that he owes him. Hawkeye's evil plan to seduce one of the camp nurses is now set in motion.
5. Hawkeye brings his newfound bottle of wine into the Swamp, showing it off to his Swampmates. BJ is interested, but Charles is downright intrigued. How much does Charles Emerson Winchester III initially offer Hawkeye for the bottle of wine?

Answer: $20

Charles initially offers $20, but then ups his offer to $25. After Hawkeye refuses, Charles insists on knowing Hawkeye's source for the wine. When Charles approaches Klinger, he suggests that he would have given the lad $30 for the wine...meaning he was going to shortchange Hawkeye!

When Charles initially sees the wine he describes it thusly: 'Born of the loins and suckled at the bosom of the Haut Médoc.'
6. Much to the disgust of many in the camp, including BJ, Hawkeye decides to have a contest in order to see which nurse will spend an evening with him and his bottle of wine. Fill in the blank from the first line in the note he leaves on the bulletin board: 'Savor a ________ evening with Hawkeye Pierce.'

Answer: Vintage

The full note reads: 'Savor a vintage evening with Hawkeye Pierce. Trade your boredom for some Bordeaux, the home of the vintners art. In 100 words or less, tell why you should be in a glass by yourself. Please sign a codename so your anonymity may be preserved.'

BJ calls Hawkeye 'depraved'.
7. Which of these is not a name by which one of the nurses anonymously signs her note in response to Hawkeye's sleazy contest?

Answer: Hot For Hawkeye

Hawkeye reads the 'Chastity' and 'Very Married' notes with much disappointment, but the entry from 'Sweet Preserves' has him bubbling with excitement. As sleazy as Hawkeye's contest is, you actually feel sorry for him when you discover he has been duped.
8. Colonel Potter and Klinger have left the camp on a daring mission to retrieve some curare. On the way, Klinger also goes to pick up more of the wine at the request of Charles. Unfortunately, the wine does not survive the return trip to the 4077th. Why?

Answer: Colonel Potter uses the wine to fill the radiator

Charles is set to pay $40 a bottle for five additional bottles of '47 Margaux, but alas he is never to receive his sweet nectar. Klinger forgot to fill the canteen on the jeep with water, and when the radiator overheats, they are forced to use the wine to sooth its thirst.
9. Which nurse turns out to be Hawkeye's date that evening?

Answer: Nurse Palmer

Nurse Palmer is played by Susan Berger. This is her only appearance on the show, but it is quite a memorable one.
10. What word does Hawkeye use to describe the wine after his private soirée is broken up by the entire nursing staff?

Answer: Dry

The wine is distributed into glasses for each member of the nursing staff. When the bottle returns to Hawkeye, it is empty. He attempts to pour a bit into his glass, to no avail, then draws the glass up for a faux drink. 'Dry, very dry' is Hawkeye's clever commentary on the wine.
