Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. McGarrett

Answer: Steve

This character has appeared in two incarnations of "Hawaii Five-O", the first from 1968 to 1980 starring Jack Lord (as McGarrett) and James MacArthur (as Danny Williams), and the more recent series which débuted in 2010 with Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan.. The character is famous for his repeated command to his partner, "Book 'em, Danno".
2. Briscoe

Answer: Lenny

Lenny Briscoe appeared as a major character in "Law & Order" from 1992 to 2004, the longest run of any detective on the show, and in guest spots on "Law & Order: SVU", "Law & Order: Criminal Intent", "Law & Order: Trial by Jury", and also on "Homicide: Life on the Streets".

He was played by Jerry Orbach, who began his career as a leading man on Broadway (e.g., "The Fantasticks") and also appeared in films and on television. Lenny Briscoe and Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston) are the characters who first come to mind when one thinks of "Law & Order".
3. Taylor

Answer: Mac

Gary Sinese played Detective Mac Taylor in the TV show "CSI: New York", which ran from 2004 to 2013. Mac previously had a career in the Marine Corps, serving in Lebanon and then the Gulf War. Before the series opens, his wife has been killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and not until the final episodes of the series does he find a new love, Christine.
4. Castle

Answer: Richard

"Castle" ran for eight years (2009-2016) and starred Nathan Filion (as Richard Castle) and Stana Katic (as Detective Kate Beckett of the NYPD homicide squad). Castle is a successful writer of crime fiction, one of whose novels is used by a serial killer as a template for his murders. Castle is asked to assist Detective Beckett and after successfully helping catch the killer he becomes a permanent consultant to the Department. Two major sub-plots run through the series: the romance between Castle and Beckett, and the search for the murderer of Beckett's mother.
5. McGee

Answer: Timothy

Timothy McGee (played by Sean Murray) was not an original member of the NCIS team, but joined part way through the first season. Both a successful writer of police procedurals (based on his fellow team-mates at NCIS) and a very skilled computer operator, he rose to become Gibbs's very special agent, after Anthony DiNozzo left the agency.

He married Delilah Fielding in season 12, and they had a child in season 15.
6. Stabler

Answer: Elliot

Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) was the leading male character on "Law & Order: SVU" from 1999-2011. After a career in the Marines and serving in Desert Storm, he joined the 16th Precinct ("Sex Crimes") and was partnered with Olivia Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) for the twelve years that he was on the show.

He is married to Kathie and has five children, two of whom (Kathleen and Dickie) have had recurring roles in the show. After having to shoot a young woman who had killed three people and opened fire in the Precinct, he resigned from the police force.
7. Caine

Answer: Horatio

The opening credits of "CSI: Miami" end with Horatio Caine putting on his distinctive dark sun-glasses. Played by David Caruso, Lieutenant Caine was the head of the Crime Lab of the Miami-Dade Police Department for ten seasons (2002-2012). Formerly a member of the NYPD, he joined the MDPD, first in homicide and then moved to take over the Crime Lab.

His personal life was stormy: having feelings for his brother's wife, seeing his brother murdered by the mob, a short marriage ended by the murder of his bride, and discovering that he had a teen-aged son (Kyle), who had a recurring role in the series.
8. Rockford

Answer: Jim

James Garner played Jim Rockford in "The Rockford Files" from 1974 to 1980. This was intended to focus on the main character, a private investigator in Los Angeles, who had previously served some time in prison for a crime that he did not commit. A feature of the show was Rockford's car, a gold Firebird, and "the Rockford maneuver", a rapid to turn the car in the opposite direction.
9. Goren

Answer: Bobby (or Robert)

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" was the third of the "Law & Order" franchises and ran from 2001 to 2010. Vincent D'Onofrio played Detective Robert "Bobby" Goren for most of the ten seasons, although in season 9 he and his regular partner, Detective Alexandra Eames, are largely absent from the series.

He is not a happy character in his personal life: uncertainty of who his father was, his mother a schizophrenic, a brother addicted to gambling, his nephew murdered by his arch-nemesis, and in season 10 he has regular appointments with a psychiatrist.
10. Crockett

Answer: Sonny

"Miami Vice" was an elegant and visually pleasing "cop show", set in Miami, with James "Sonny" Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas") as the lead detectives. Their principal war on crime was with the drug-lords and it was their realisation that they could not win all the battles that led them both to resign in the last episode of the series' five-year run. Don Johnson won a Golden Globe Award for the role in 1986.
11. Grissom

Answer: Gil

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was the first of the "CSI" franchises, and was a surprise hit when it débuted in 2000. William Petersen played the lead role of a CSI Supervisor in the Las Vegas Police Department during the show's first nine seasons, and returned in guest spots over the next few years, appearing in the final two-part episode in September 2015. Grissom was a forensic entomologist and something of a quirky character, with an off-beat sense of humour.

His personal motto was "I believe in science".
12. LaSalle

Answer: Christopher

"NCIS" New Orleans" was the third entry in the "NCIS" franchise, and débuted in 2014. LaSalle, played by former child actor Lucas Black ("Slingblade"), came originally from Alabama but moved to New Orleans after graduating from the University of Alabama . He acts as the right-hand man to series lead Dwayne Cassius Pride (Scott Bakula)
13. Jane

Answer: Patrick

The Australian actor, Simon Baker, played Patrick Jane for all seven seasons of "The Mentalist" (2008-2015) on CBS. Raised by carnival parents, he was previously a "psychic", noted for his acute powers of observation and deduction. After his wife and daughter were killed by a serial murderer, "Red John", he became a consultant to the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), using his abilities to help solve crimes. For the last two years of the series he becomes an consultant to the FBI in Houston. Two themes dominate the show: Jane's pursuit of Red John and ultimate revenge, and his growing relationship with his boss, Teresa Lisbon, whom he marries in the final episode.
14. Sipowicz

Answer: Andy

"NYPD Blue" was one of the most gritty and powerful crime shows ever aired on American television. It ran for twelve seasons (1993-2005) on ABC, with Dennis Franz playing the rough-edged and recovering alcoholic Andy Sipowicz for every episode of the show. Sipowicz had served in Vietnam and later joined the NYPD. Stricken with all sorts of personal tragedies, he rose above all these and displayed a mixture of violence and sensitivity.
15. Callan

Answer: G

Much of the back-story of Agent G. Callen on "NCIS: Los Angeles" concerns his name and the mystery of his early life. He knows that he grew up in 37 foster-homes and in one episode remembers a scene from his childhood that took place on a beach in Romania.

He is partnered in LA with Agent Sam Hanna with whom he has a close, but sometimes abrasive, relationship. We find out that his birth name was "Grisha Alekandrovich Nikolaev Callen", but his boss, Henrietta Lange, will not call him "G", as others do, saying, "It's not a name, it's a letter".
