Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Game of Thrones" episode "Red Wedding" had some of the most shocking violence in television history. Which member of the Stark clan survived the massacre?

Answer: Arya Stark

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) is the sister of Robb and daughter of Catelyn. After her family was murdered, Arya went to the House of Black and White to become a super warrior. Those skills came in handy as she killed many of the people who had wronged her, including Meryn Trant, Tolliver and Rorge. Maisie Williams also appeared on "Doctor Who" as Ashildr/Me in several episodes during 2015, starting with "The Girl Who Died".

Robb Stark (Richard Madden) was the eldest son of Eddard and Catelyn Stark. After being wounded by a crossbow, Robb was stabbed by his vassal Roose Bolton. Bolton was stabbed to death by his own son (sorry, Arya).

Talisa Stark (Oona Chaplin, Charlie's granddaughter) was the wife of Robb. The pregnant Talisa was stabbed repeatedly in the stomach by Lothar Frey. Arya chopped up Lothar and fed him in a pie to his father Walder.

Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), was the mother of Robb and Arya. She had her throat cut by Walder Frey. Arya avenged her mother by cutting Walder Frey's throat.
2. "Dexter" (2006-2013) was certainly one of the bloodiest series around. What city was the show set in?

Answer: Miami

"Dexter" featured Michael C Hall as a blood spatter analyst who moonlighted as a serial killer. Dexter Morgan specialized in killing serial killers who fell through cracks in the criminal justice system. He worked for the Miami Metro Police Department.

"Dexter" aired on Showtime from October 2006 to September 2013. If you looking for real gore, check out "Seeing Red" from season one, in which Dexter enters a room literally filled with blood.
3. "American Horror Story" has upped the gore and violence quotient on television since 2011. What actress had her character die during the season 1 episode "Birth"?

Answer: Connie Britton

In "Birth", Connie Britton's character Vivien gives birth to two children. The first is stillborn. Shortly after, she starts hemorrhaging, which results in a great deal of blood. Vivien dies as a result of blood loss.

Taissa Farmiga played Violet, Vivien's daughter. Jessica Lange was Constance Langdon, the psychotic next door neighbor of Vivien, who wanted to steal Vivien's child. Mena Suvari played actress Elizabeth Short, the victim of the infamous "Black Sahlia" murder.

Connie Britton is probably best known for her work on "Friday Night Lights" (2006-2011) and "Nashville" (2012-2018). Britton was nominated for an Emmy Award for her work on "American Horror Story."
4. No quiz on blood on television would be complete without the vampire series "True Blood" (2008-2014). What southern state was the series set in?

Answer: Louisiana

"True Blood" was set in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. It centers around Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress who falls in love with a vampire. Given the vampires, blood is pretty much a given on this show. When vampires were killed (known as "True Death") they would explode into a bloody mess. For a great example, see ""Plaisir d'Amour" from season 1.

"True Blood" aired on HBO from September 2008 to August 2014.
5. "The Walking Dead" has contributed plenty of violence and mayhem to TV screens since 2010. What have the survivors nicknamed the zombies?

Answer: walkers

Zombies are known as Walkers. It would be almost impossible to pick the single most gory or violent scene in "Walking Dead" history, although Daryl using a zombie skull in "Crossed" (5.7) and Noah being trapped with the zombies in the revolving door(5.14) rank right up there.

"The Walking Dead" first aired on AMC on Halloween 2010.
6. "Spartacus" actually reveled in its violence. What historic empire is the setting for the action?

Answer: Roman

"Spartacus" is modeled on a slave who led an uprising against the Roman Empire during the first century AD. Actor Andy Whitfield played the title role before dying of cancer in 2011. Liam McIntyre played Spartacus for the remaining three seasons,

If you are looking for especially gory in this remarkably violent series, check out Season 2, episode 7, "Sacramentum" in which Spartacus slices off the face of Sedullus (Conan Stevens).

Actor John Hannah said that Spartacus was "the most explicit, violent series ever made." He could be right. In a 2012 review, Spartacus was the most violent show of the year, averaging 25 deaths per episode to only 14 for "Game of Thrones."

"Spartacus" aired on Starz from January 2010 to April 2013.
7. In a notable scene from the second season of "Penny Dreadful" what character literally bathes in blood?

Answer: Evelyn Poole

Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory) bathes in blood. She is a powerful witch who has lived hundreds of years. She used charisma and magic to control others.

Joan Clayton (Patti Lupone) is Evelyn's sister. Like her sister, she is a witch who has lived at least 300 years. Hecate (Sarah Greene) is Evelyn's daughter. Like her mother, she is a witch.

Mina Harker (Olivia Llewellyn) is based on the character from "Dracula". She is one of several "Penny Dreadful" characters based on horror fiction of the 19th century, including Dorian Gray and Victor Frankenstein.

"Penny Dreadful" aired on Showtime in the United States between May 2014 and June 2016.

Hugh Dancy played William Graham, an FBI profiler who was tracking Lecter. Eddie Izzard played Abel Gideon, a surgeon who killed his family.

Anthony Hopkins played Lecter in several films, most notably "The Silence of the Lambs", for which he won an Academy Award.

The NBC series aired from April 2013 to August 2015. Gillian Anderson of "X-Files" played Lecter's psychologist.
