Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Dragnet", "Six Feet Under", "Big Bang Theory" What metropolitan area are these shows set in?

Answer: Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a convenient location for television programs because of all the studios in the area, not to mention the talent -- actors, crew, directors, producers -- who live there.

"Dragnet" is a police procedural show that ran on NBC beginning in 1951, after several years as a radio program. Jack Webb was the executive producer as well as the star, starring as LAPD detective Sergeant Joe Friday.

HBO premiered "Six Feet Under" in 2001 and ran it for five seasons. Based on the Fisher family, who owned, operated, and lived above a funeral home in Los Angeles, "Six Feet Under" won multiple Emmy, Screen Actor Guild, and Golden Globes awards.

"The Big Bang Theory" premiered on CBS in the fall of 2007 but didn't become a huge hit until its second season. By its fifth, it had won five Emmys. The show follows a group of scientists who work at a major university in Pasadena, which is a city in Los Angeles County.
2. "House", "The Sopranos", "Charles in Charge" What state are these shows set in?

Answer: New Jersey

Between North and South Jersey, the state offers a wide variety of demographics, scenery, and general East Coast atmosphere. It has lush outdoors as "The Garden State" but its Northern cities have an industrial feel.

"House" starred British actor Hugh Laurie as a curmudgeonly yet brilliant doctor specializing in diagnostics. It ran on Fox from 2004 to 2012 and while his co-stars rotated fairly regularly, Laurie remained the top star and received many awards for his portrayal of Dr. House.

HBO's "The Sopranos", about a northern New Jersey mafia family, has been lauded by critics as one of the best television shows in history. Praised for its complex story lines, artistic cinematography, soundtrack choices, and character development, "The Sopranos" won 21 Emmy awards and earned 111 nominations.

"Charles in Charge" starred teen heartthrob Scott Baio as a college student in New Brunswick, New Jersey who nannied for a family and lived in their basement. The show ran on CBS for the 1985-1986 season, then moved to syndication where it ran until 1990.
3. "Breaking Bad", "In Plain Sight", "Roswell" Where are these shows set?

Answer: New Mexico

With its sweeping scenery, New Mexico adds a touch of lawlessness to its homegrown shows.

"Breaking Bad" ran on AMC from 2008 to 2013. It centered on the story of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who became a drug kingpin. The show received raves from critics and viewers.

"In Plain Sight" received good reviews but not a lot of fanfair. It starred Mary McCormack as Mary Shannon, a United States Marshall with the Federal Witness Protection Program. It ran for five seasons on the USA network, 2008-2012.

"Roswell" is a funky little science fiction show set in an alien-friendly area of New Mexico; it ran on WB and then UPN for three seasons, 1999-2002. If you watch it, you may find some familiar faces that went on to TV success: Katherine Heigl went on to "Grey's Anatomy" and movies beyond that; Adam Rodriguez was part of the cast of "CSI: Miami" for all ten of its seasons; and Colin Hanks, most famous probably for being the eldest son of actor Tom Hanks, went on to join the cast of the highly-acclaimed TV version of "Fargo" on FX in 2014.
4. "2 Broke Girls", "Bored to Death", "Cosby Show" What area are these shows set in?

Answer: Brooklyn, New York

With a plethora of shows set in Manhattan, it can be refreshing to find some in Brooklyn, its neighboring borough.

"2 Broke Girls" was the break-out sitcom of 2011, more because of the charm of its two stars, Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, than for any critical praise. Dennings and Behrs play two young women in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.

"Bored to Death" is a quirky little comedy on HBO that stars Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, and Zach Galifianakis. Jason played a lovelorn Brooklyn writer named Jonathan who was also an amateur private detective. It ran for three short seasons (2009-2011) and had a small passionate fan base.

"The Cosby Show" was seen at 8:00pm on Thursday nights for all eight of its seasons, 1984-1991. A vehicle for comedy legend Bill Cosby, the show revolved around Cosby as a doctor and his large family.
5. "Frasier", "Grey's Anatomy", "The Killing" What city are these shows set in?

Answer: Seattle

Seattle is known for its rainy weather, but it's also called "The Emerald City" because it's particularly lush and green. The layers of water, fog, and evaporating sunshine make for an interesting backdrop for television and movies alike.

"Frasier" was a huge hit for NBC, one of the best examples of a spin-off performing as well as an original. Kelsey Grammer played Dr. Frasier Crane, a somewhat minor character on the sitcom "Cheers". When Frasier moved to Seattle, a spin-off was born. It ran for 11 seasons (1993-2004), as did "Cheers" (1982-1993).

ABC debuted "Grey's Anatomy", a one-hour medical drama, in 2005. It was an immediate hit, especially in the coveted 18-49 year-old demographic. It has a large cast that portray surgeons and other doctors at a fictional Seattle hospital.

"The Killing" debuted on AMC in 2011, an American version of the Danish show, "Forbrydelsen". Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman starred as Seattle homicide detectives. In the first season the detective chased the elusive killer of teenager Rosie Larsen.
6. "Monk", "Charmed", "Parenthood" (2010) What area are these shows set in?

Answer: San Francisco Bay Area

San Francisco offers a dramatic backdrop to any story with its sweeping views, rugged coastline, bold architecture, picturesque bridges, and diverse neighborhoods. Though few shows are actually shot in San Francisco -- likely due to the high price of permits for filming there -- several have taken place there.

"Monk" ran on the USA network for eight seasons, 2002-2009. Tony Shalhoub won three Best Actor Emmy awards for his portrayal of Adrian Monk, a quirky obsessive-compulsive detective.

Most of producer Aaron Spelling's soapy dramas were set in Los Angeles, including "Melrose Place" and "Beverly Hills, 90210", but "Charmed" was an exception. A bevy of beauties played witches who used their magic for good; the show ran on WB, 1998-2006.

Berkeley is the home of most branches of the Braverman family portrayed on NBC's "Parenthood", but because it's just across the bay from San Francisco, it is considered part of the bay area. NBC released an earlier version of "Parenthood" in 1990, based on the Ron Howard movie from 1989; in that earlier version, the family lived in an unspecified area of California.
7. "Treme", "TrueBlood", "True Detective" (season one) What state are these shows set in?

Answer: Louisiana

Louisiana is ripe with atmospheric locations that can highly enhance a show's feel. "Treme", co-created part by successful producer David Simon, portrayed the city of New Orleans in all its glory. It followed multiple storylines and captured the music, characters, weather, and political climate that make the city unique. "Treme" ran on HBO from 2010-2013.

Bon Temps may be the fictional, but Louisiana is still the setting for HBO's vampire series, "TrueBlood," which premiered in 2008. The show centers on Sookie Stackhouse, played by Anna Paquin, a telepathic waitress in a world where vampires and other creatures live among us.

Someone at HBO must have taken a fancy to Louisiana because the third show in our question, "True Detective", is also set there. The first season of this anthology series is set in rural Louisiana and follows a pair of detectives, played by megastars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, chasing a particularly sick serial killer.
8. "Happy Days", the first five seasons of "Laverne & Shirley", "That '70s Show" What state are these shows set in?

Answer: Wisconsin

With a large midwestern city, Milwaukee, as well as smaller towns, Wisconsin offers a particularly American feel to movies and TV set there.

"Happy Days" on ABC is one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. Created by producer Garry Marshall in 1974, this show depicted the 1950s in America through rose-colored glasses. It was intended to revolve around teenager Richie Cunningham, played by Ron Howard, but over time the character of Fonzie became the central figure.

"Laverne & Shirley" was a spin-off from "Happy Days" so it's no surprise it was also set in Milwaukee. The two main characters were introduced in "Happy Days" as dates of Fonzie and Richie, then Laverne and Shirley moved to their own show. The show was set in Milwaukee for five seasons; at that point, the women moved to Burbank. The show was less successful there and even the actor who played Shirley left. If you pay attention, you will pick up that Laverne's accent is more Bronx and less Milwaukee; the actor who played her, Penny Marshall, is from The Bronx, as is her brother, the producer Garry Marshall.

"That '70s Show" was set in Point Place, a fictional suburb in Wisconsin. Also a period show, it revolved around high school student Eric Foreman and his four best friends. The show ran for 8 seasons and earned 16 Emmy nominations.
9. "Cheers", "Ally McBeal", "Crossing Jordan" What city are these shows set in?

Answer: Boston

Boston has some of the richest history in the country, and many shows have capitalized on that. The city's beautiful architecture, historical waterways and harbors, and its residents' distinctive Bostonian accents can all add texture to a program or movie.

"Cheers" is one of the most successful sitcoms in television history. Although it was almost cancelled in its first season (1992-1993), it gained an audience and became part of NBC's "Must-See-TV" Thursday night line-up. It portrayed the owner and patrons of a wood-panelled Bostonian bar.

"Ally McBeal" ran on Fox from 1997 to 2002. It revolved around the attorneys and staff of Cage & Fish, a law firm in Boston, with Calista Flockhart starring as the protagonist, Ally McBeal. Its mix of drama, comedy, music, and special effects was original for the time.

"Crossing Jordan" uses its setting of Boston a little more than the previously-mentioned shows. Jill Hennessey starred as Jordan Cavanaugh, a forensic pathologist and crime-fighter whose father was a cop and then owned a bar. Jordan and her father, played by Ken Howard, were portrayed as Irish; Boston has a large Irish population. "Crossing Jordan" ran on NBC for six years, completing its run in 2007.
10. "Bones", "Homeland", "The West Wing" What area are these shows set in?

Answer: Washington, D.C.

As the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. can be an exciting backdrop, especially if political intrigue is part of the storyline.

"Homeland" debuted on Showtime in 2011. It stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a CIA operative fighting terrorism. Although the CIA is based in Langley, Virginia which is just minutes from the capitol, many of the show's scenes take place abroad, including such locations as Tel Aviv, Caracas, and Morocco.

"The West Wing" is a political drama that ran on NBC from 1999 to 2006. It took place in the Oval Office of the White House and followed a fictionalized U.S. President and his senior staff. The show won 7 Emmy awards.
