Yost met Dorothy while recuperating from wounds received at Guadalcanal. They decided they would marry when one of them was discharged because she was an officer and he was an enlisted man. He takes this information back to Gibbs as a possible motive for Yost killing Keene. Later, Yost tells Gibbs that Keene knew Yost was going to marry Dorothy and that it was okay.

When a soldier dies and his remains can't be recovered immediately, one dog tag was stuck between the teeth and the jaw forcibly closed. This assured that the remains could be identified at a later date. There was a myth about that being the reason for the notch on older dog tags, but it was later shown that the notch was to hold the tag in place on the machine that imprinted the information onto it.

When Lt. Commander Coleman sees the display that Gibbs set up in interrogation, she decides that she will tell the Secretary of the Navy that Yost is suffering from delayed post traumatic stress and that Cpl. Keene was killed in action.
