Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nephew died in a fire.

Answer: Picard

As did his brother, Robert. Captain Picard received notification of their deaths in "Star Trek: Generations".
2. Born in Iowa.

Answer: Kirk

Best line in "Star Trek IV": "No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space."
3. Born in Indiana.

Answer: Janeway

In the "Voyager" episode "11:59", we learn about one of Janeway's ancestors, a former NASA scientist, and her experiences in Portage Creek, Indiana.
4. Born in upstate New York.

Answer: Archer

Though believed to have been born in California, Captain Archer was actually born in upstate New York. But he did spend much of his adult life in San Francisco.
NOTE -- Though startrek.com did originally list his place of birth as San Francisco, in the "Enterprise" episode "North Star" he tells the sheriff of the "Old West" colony that he was born in upstate New York.
5. Brokered a truce with the Borg.

Answer: Janeway

In the "Voyager" episode "Scorpion, Parts I and II", Janeway and the Borg joined forces to combat Species 8472. One of the provisions of this truce was that Voyager was to receive a Borg contingent, including Seven of Nine.
6. Destroyed his/her own ship in the correct timeline.

Answer: Kirk

Although all these captains activated the self-destruct on their respective ships, only Kirk allowed completion of the self-destruct. In "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", Kirk activated the self-destruct of the Enterprise after the encounter with the Klingons; he then watched the Enterprise burned itself in the atmosphere after he and his friends beamed down to the Genesis Planet. NOTE -- Captain Janeway did destroy her ship twice, but in both cases, the destructions occurred in alternate universes or timelines.

In "Deadlock", a plasma cloud with unusual properties caused a second Voyager to appear, with both experiencing heavy damage in the process. More, the Vidiians were in pursuit. The second Janeway decided to sacrifice her ship to save the first one from capture from the Vidiians.

Then, in "Year Of Hell", Janeway rammed a Krenim ship with the crippled Voyager, destroying both vessels. The result of this collision was the restoration of the timeline, preventing the crew's encounter with the Krenim and the ship restored to its normal appearance.
7. Father owns a restaurant.

Answer: Sisko

It was a Creole restaurant in New Orleans, which we got to see for the first time in the "DS9" episode "Paradise Lost". It should be noted that in early "DS9" episodes, Commander Sisko had talked about his father in the past tense, implying that Joseph Sisko (Brock Peters) had passed on prior to the start of the series.
8. Father was a warp-drive scientist.

Answer: Archer

Henry Archer was one of the men who helped develop the Warp-5 facility that built the ship his son would command.
9. Father was a Starfleet Admiral.

Answer: Janeway

He had drowned on Tau Ceti Prime years before Capt. Janeway took command of Voyager. We got to meet him (sort of) in the "Voyager" episode "Coda".
10. Father was a vintner.

Answer: Picard

Jean-Luc's brother, Robert, took over the family winery in France after their father died ("TNG" episode "Family").
11. Impersonated an historical figure to preserve the time line.

Answer: Sisko

While all of the captains went back in time, it was Sisko who, in the "DS9" two-part episode "Past Tense," assumed the identity of the leader of the Bell Riots, when the real Gabriel Bell was killed while stepping in to keep Sisko's ration card from getting stolen.
12. Loves baseball.

Answer: Sisko

Sisko kept a baseball on his desk, and his attraction to Kasidy Yates (Penny Johnson) was predicated by the fact that her brother played in a baseball league on Cestus III ("DS9" episode "Family Business").
13. Loves water polo.

Answer: Archer

Prior to the mission into the Delphic Expanse, Capt. Archer was seen watching water polo matches in his quarters on a regular basis. Once, he even received a final score, relayed to him (okay, it was Tucker pretending to be him) by the commander of a Vulcan ship!
14. Was widowed.

Answer: Sisko

Sisko's wife, Jennifer, was among the casualties of the Borg attack at Wolf 359 ("DS9" episode "Emmisary").
NOTE -- Technically, Kirk was also a widower. In the episode "The Paradise Syndrome" (TOS), Kirk lost most of his memory and the Native Americans on the planet he was exploring believed him to be a god. There, he met and married Miramanee (Sabrina Scharf). Later, when Kirk is exposed as a false god, both he and Miramanee were stoned; she subsequently died from her injuries.
15. Cheated on a simulator at the Academy.

Answer: Kirk

In "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", Kirk revealed that he had reprogrammed the Kobayashi Maru test so he could win the "no-win scenario," and he got a commendation for it!
16. Well-versed in Shakespeare.

Answer: Picard

Best example: Picard recites (by rote) the "What a piece of work is man" monologue ("Hamlet," Act II, Scene 2) to Q.
NOTE -- Patrick Stewart was a professional Shakespearean stage actor in England in the 1960s and 1970s.
17. Flew model spaceships as a child.

Answer: Archer

In the "Enterprise" pilot "Broken Bow", a young Archer and his father were seen with the model ship on the beach in flashbacks.
18. Brother killed by an alien creature.

Answer: Kirk

In the "TOS" episode "Operation -- Annihilate!", George Samuel ("Sam") Kirk and his wife, Aurelan, were among the casualties following the attack by the single-celled creatures at Deneva Colony.
FAST FACT -- The dead Sam was "played" by William Shatner.
19. Has an artificial heart.

Answer: Picard

Prior to his first assignment, Picard was stabbed through the heart during a bar fight with several Nausicaans ("TNG" episodes "Samaritan Snare" and "Tapestry").
20. Admired the life and work of Leonardo Da Vinci.

Answer: Janeway

Janeway discloses she always had a place in her heart for Da Vinci (John Rhys-Davies), and she had even spent time in a holographic re-creation of his home from time to time.
NOTE -- John Rhys-Davies, best-known as Sullah in the "Indiana Jones" movies, also worked with Kate Mulgrew (as well as Marinia Sirtis, Michael Dorn and Jonathan Frakes) in the Disney animated series "Gargoyles."
