After the Doctor reunited with Sarah Jane Smith, he invited her to come back to the TARDIS permanently. She refused, citing the fact that it was time for her to move on with her life.

In season 3's "Smith and Jones," the Doctor kissed Martha in order to give himself enough time to escape from the Judoon, who were planning to kill anyone with alien DNA.
