Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many designers participated in this season of "Next in Fashion"?

Answer: Eighteen

In ten episodes, these eighteen fashion designers would be whittled down to one winner through a series of challenges testing their abilities to make trendsetting and affecting fashion of all sorts and styles. The winner would, in the end, walk away with $250,000 for their own clothing brand, but to get there, they needed to start in teams of two (of which there were nine), collaborating task to task.

For their first task, the teams had to conceptualize and sew red carpet gowns that could impress the hosts and guest judges Elizabeth Stewart, Eva Chen, and Monique Lhullier. Designers Isaac and Nishelly were sent home for their snake-print "Game of Thrones-inspired" outfit, mostly because it was impractical for the wearer.
2. During the second round of the competition, designers worked with prints and patterns. How many duos opted not to create their own pattern?

Answer: One

With eight duos remaining, the designers were asked to focus their attentions on prints and patterns for their second runway show, and this time, they needed to create two different outfits-- one male and one female-- to present onstage. Additionally, designers had the opportunity to design their own custom patterns on a digital printer, and most did.

The only team to avoid doing this, Narresh and Lorena, utilized provided patterns, creating a stylish and commercial pair of outfits that did too little to break the mold.
3. In the third round of the competition, the designers faced off by meticulously constructing suits. All of the garments created were for men.

Answer: False

Adversely, of the seven suits created, six were made for female models. This round, the designers took a day and a half to create a single suit to impress the judges (including designer Phillip Lim). They had the choice of make or female models, but it needed to exhibit the typical strength of construction of a proper suit. Eliminated this time were Julian and Hayley who were unable to collaborate with one another on more than one occasion and create a cohesive look marrying their styles.
4. In round four, no teams were eliminated on the back of a challenge involving which of these styles of clothing?

Answer: Streetwear

Round four proved to be one of the tougher rounds of the competition as the designers needed to break the mold by creating the up-and-coming style of streetwear to be presented in front of Brooklyn designer Kerby Jean-Raymond. Once again, two outfits (one male and one female) were required. Ultimately Angel and Minju won the round with their adaptable nylon garments based on the clothing of female fishers from Jeju Island.

The real surprise, however, was in the non-elimination. Since the judges couldn't agree on whether or not to eliminate Farai and Kiki or Claire and Adolfo, they postponed the elimination and started from scratch for the following round.
5. Which team was eliminated at the end of the Underwear round after four instances in the bottom two?

Answer: Farai and Kiki

Still working as a 'final six teams', the designers reached the halfway point of the competition and faced off creating lingerie and underwear, fully conceptualizing a pair of looks-- one for a male wearer and one for a plus-sized female wearer. With Adriana Lima guest-judging, this challenge proved a tough fit for some teams. Ashton and Marco won with a stained-glass-inspired pair of outfits designed with the LGBTQ+ community in mind while Farai and Kiki were sent home after their fourth time in the bottom two.
6. For the sixth round of the competition, the designers created looks inspired by which of these musical genres?

Answer: Rock and roll

Round six was rock and roll, and the designer duos were able to draw inspiration from any subgenre-- punk, hard rock, metal, grunge, glam-- to create the next step in rocker fashion to appeal to the judges, this time including Christopher Kane and special guest Beth Ditto. Creating one male and one female look, this challenge was won by Carli and Daniel, who provided a pared back and nuanced rocker look. Ultimately it was a unanimous decision to send home Claire and Adolfo for their cliche and attitude-free leather garments. Following this challenge, the final four teams were dissolved into eight solo competitors.
7. When the designers were finally split into solo competitors in the Activewear round, how many of them were eliminated?

Answer: Two

With the teams divided at the start of round seven, the final eight were asked to consider fashion and function in creating a new look-- male or female-- in the style of activewear, presenting their garments on the runway for guest judge Josefine Aberg of Addidas.

This time around, Daniel won for a new take on a British rowing outfit with a scarf and mock turtleneck. His former partner, Carli, was eliminated for her overambitious and unfinished design. She went home alongside Angelo, who had poor construction on his non-functioning swimsuit design.
8. The final six created single outfits inspired by which of these styles of clothing?

Answer: Military

The final six saw military garb as their influence for this eighth challenge and what resulted was a six-garment runway show judged by Public School's Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, both known for their military influence in clothing. Once again, two more left the competition.

While unlikely front-runners Angel and Minju stayed ahead this round, Marco and Charles were sent packing, Marco for a costumey superhero-like pin-up-inspired outfit and Charles for a too-simple, but well-constructed outfit that needed more editing.
9. The semi-final round of the competition utilized which fabric as a focal point?

Answer: Denim

The second-to-last round of the competition forced the final four designers to make heavy use of the versatile fabric known as denim, and while they could treat it any way they wanted to, they needed to make two garments-- one male and one female and present it for critique in front of none other than Tommy Hilfiger himself. Only two were allowed to pass to the final round, so the judges kept Daniel for his sustainability-inspired dress and outfit combo and Minju for her futuristic pieces inspired by the movie "The Ghost in the Shell". Both Angel and Ashton were eliminated despite strong pieces because their works seemed derivative of existing styles and not strong enough as representations of what was 'next in fashion'.
10. Who won this season of 'Next in Fashion'?

Answer: Minju

For the final round, Daniel and Minju were told that they would have three days to complete their most extreme job yet. Ten full outfits each-- their full vision-- for one last runway show. While they would have three sewers to craft garments, all creative choices needed to be made by the designer and the final piece had to be a show-stopper in every way.

While Daniel made a set of men's and women's clothing themed around the Bright Young Things of the 1920s and ended with a meticulously-constructed silver dress, Minju centred her work on the aesthetic of Frida Kahlo and completed her show with a unique bridal gown.

It was enough to tip the scales in her favour because the judges awarded her with the win-- $250,000 and a spot on the Net-a-Porter site-- and declared her 'Next in Fashion'.
